Base purchase of $10 for a bunch of great poo poo, then if you put in more money/goals, you get better/additional rewards. Like remember, the TI4 prize pool was only 1/4th of compendium moneys, so they made a shitload of money off the compendiums, and the prize pool mechanic got positive word of mouth out about Valve supporting their scene (Riot was really ticked off about it). Like how long does 12 cosmetic items (not entire skins) and a few couriers cost to make? Because those were the rewards excluding the poo poo like weather and emoticons that were getting done no matter what.

I play farmville 2, and the price points for that game are something like: $10 gets you enough farmbucks to buy 1 (of the cheaper) farm animals or decorations $20 one of the expensive farm animals $50 about half a dozen $100 will last you a lot longer because the more you pay the more farmbucks you get but still $100 will you get maybe a 3rd of the available pay-to-play content that is always avaialbe, and they are constantly cycling new content every few weeks. $200 will last you even longer some games I've seen in-game currency purchases where the high end ones are $350 The price inflation in casual gaming compared to core gaming is nuts. And it works, people do buy this stuff.

I work for a smaller game company, can confirm that it's crazy to hear all the corporate-psycho-babble about courting potential and returning users. The marketing department is a strange and terrifying beast. Also at games journalists who think women can't be as exploitive, mean, or abusive as men. You should see the number of death threats we've received, a lot if not most of them are from women. Hometown Slime Queen fucked around with this message at 20:09 on Aug 30, 2014 |

Lobster Harmonica posted:welp I just got objectively blown the gently caress out OTOH the dilemma of f2p games is that when they don't get super-popular they make zero money. Traditional AAA tends to make back enough money to at least cover most of their expenses. A f2p game that sinks into the depths of the app store or steam makes nothing, which is why most of them are low-effort garbage churned out as fast as possible.
