TheCoon posted:Ray Gigant. Arslan Musou. Oh, sweet. Ray Gigant actually looks pretty cool. I mean it's apparently mostly just a normal dungeon crawler with a few new battle ideas, but they have this animated over-the-shoulder view of each character when you're picking their attacks that gives the battles a little more visual flair than other Japanese dungeon crawlers and it seems to have some interesting world concepts going on. Dunno how to feel about Arslan. I haven't seen the anime yet because I wanted to read the books first, and with Musou games there's nothing to really get excited about unless you like what it's based on. Plus I'm not sure if there's room in my heart for a Musou game that isn't Dragon Quest Heroes. Edit: Speaking of, it's pretty hilarious how many negative reviews of Dragon Quest Heroes boil down to: wtf why is this a button-mashing action game instead of an RPG??? I said I'd post another review of Thea: The awakening after I'd played it more. Short version: a nice new game that is fun to play, but if it's a toss-up between this and civ IV or endless legend, I'd get both of those other games first. How the game works: You pick a god which alters your bonuses, then you start playing. You have a single city/settlement. It has spaces for 10 buildings, but you will probably not use all of those. You have 3 kinds of people: gatherers (workers), crafters and warriors (more but they're rare: medics, witches, sages, hunters, elves, dwarves and some of each monster race). Warriors are probably the most important since you need to venture out of your city to do quests and just discover stuff, and also because each square of the hex map has gatherable resources, and you're not even guaranteed to have any resources in your city. The resources are used to craft better stuff. The basic ones are wood for firewood, and food. If you have no firewood and food for your party, they will not recover from any wounds taken during battle. The plot is that the world (Thea) was plunged into darkness for 100 years, but some gods kept a city of their faithful alive and possibly asleep for 100 years, and now the darkness is gone and your village needs to uh, survive and make your god better or something. In your city: You have the gathering for your city hex available which is resources your city is on, and in the surrounding hexes. Normally this is between 1 and 4 resources. You can craft items which is limited at first to clothes, gathering tools and crafting tools. You can build buildings (lots of stuff needed, so infrequent) and gather the stuff nearby. So most of what you'll be doing in the game is moving a band of warriors (with the odd medic, hunter, and some gatherers) to prime spots to gather stuff you need to craft better stuff, or to gather food, or to kill mobs or mob-spawning mob camps (spider lair, raider camp), or to complete quests for XP. Research: You get XP and research points from killing people or completing quests and from crafting. The research tree is in 3 sections: 'buildings' (only really needed to research half of them), 'craft items' (super important, allows you to make medium armor and warhammers and stuff), and 'resources'. There are about 6 -8 types of resources, and researching each one unlocks that one resource and shows you where some more is on the map for you to mine/harvest (often super far from your one settlement). Researching a certain wood will also make it so that next time you get a research point, you can unlock better wood for making, for instance, better bows. Each resource type (wood, gems, metal, leather etc) has about 4-6 types hidden behind the base type, so you can get better and better stuff by researching further along the chain. The meat of the game is in the exploring. You need to make a party, give them some food and wood, equip good weapons, and explore the area around your city at first. It helps for a few turns, to clear out the nests/camps around you so that fewer bad guys spawn, but really they come back again eventually and you'll never get rid of all the bad guys until possibly super late game when you have 3 parties stomping around killing people. I've got as far as having 30+ people total in my village and having warrior parties of 15-20 people, and still get some wounded people after some tough fights so I normally use one giant raiding party to minimize injuries. The quests you get can pop up multiple times in a single playthrough. Like, TONS of times. I think they intend to add more content but as it is you'll be saving a cat and a kid who are fighting, 5+ times in 200 turns. A lot of events (events happen after you end a turn or just as you move your party through the map) have great bonuses like "increase speech in every party member permanently" so if you can do them it really helps. This is why it helps to walk around with combat-useless witches/sages in your party too. If there's a resource you can gather that's far away you need to send the gatherers in your giant raiding party to that place, then either camp the gatherers for a few turns while they gather the resource and move your warriros around close (VERY CLOSE) by, or just camp your warriors out with them, trying to help gather (they're useless at it). The save system allows for two saves: the 'save the game' save and the autosave. you can't have multiple games running because each game you start, it calculates your score for your last game and levels up the god you used int he last game, to unlock more gods and unlock bonuses for using that god again. That renders the other game 'finished' and you can't play it any more. Enemies are rated by the amount of skulls on the enemy icons. By the time you're running around the camp killing the big 5 skull enemies (who thankfully only show up maybe around turn 120) you get tons of items from each one, items can be broken down so you can forge better items from them back at the home base. I just use autoresolve for battles because you can have 6 battles per turn and at the start of the game it's good to do it yourself, but it gets boring and unneccessary to do the battles yourself later. The battles or any challenge, are done with a card system that I advise you to read the rules for, especially the rules about blunt weapons and confusion. if you're the attacker, depending on who is in your party, you can also choose non-fight options. I find orcs are not good at winning social challenges so I always kill them by ... talking to them. Overall I'd give this game a "worth the 16bux I paid for it, or even 25" and I'd say it's good, but it's not as good as endless legend civ IV or king's bounty, which it plays similarly to. It's it's own unique thing though, and apparently they're going to release DLC for it which will be free, and they seem to be patching it regularly. I found a few bugs but nothing game breaking. I'll finish the game I played and not come back to it for a while since it feels like I've seen everything at the moment. I've played it for about 2 days straight over about 3 games, and in the third game on normal I'm in the part of the game where I feel like my city is invincible after about 200 turns. The first 2 games I died horribly.

redreader posted:Thea: The awakening I had literally just searched for discussions of this game, refreshed the page and this pops up. I played a couple dozen hours a few patches before release, and based on the patch notes I don't think it changed a ton from that point. The game is very flawed but definitely has it's high points. The interface, for starters, is clearly the biggest hindrance. It feels like it's designed for a tablet or touchscreen and is cumbersome to use with a mouse. I also wish you could build up your infrastructure more--there's really no eXpand, which is too bad because getting the valuable and rare materials back to a place where you can make good of them is tedious. That said, the game is pretty charming. The world is interesting with a decent challenge curve. The combat is pretty interesting, and the only real complaint I have is that it seems like a bigger "deck" (more characters in your party) tends to be a necessary strategy. The story is interesting, drawing on a mythology I know little about. The writing is mostly good if a bit awkward at times. Overall I enjoyed playing it. I think the designer has some good ideas and hope they make a sequel or a new game after this one.
