alansmithee posted:I don't think that's a hot take at all. Hybrid was really good and Old, while it was good, had a lot of issues. He said himself how he was trying to make festival songs since he's been touring so much. It's just Old came out when he had a lot more visibility. OLD was split between introspective, dark raps and festival bangers. I get it if you don't like Danny doing festival bangers. Either as a genre, or just devoting that much of the album to them. But pretty much all his festival banger tracks are really successful at being festival bangers. And pretty much all his dark tracks are really successful at being dark tracks. It's a great compromise between people wanting the old (), serious Danny Brown and the newer party/fun stuff. You get your cake and eat it too. Look at this loving track list. There's what, Wonderbread and Dubstep as the only mediocre tracks? (and poo poo I actually like Wonderbread). I'm a huge proponent of Danny and I've been beating his drum in on SA since like 2011, so I get that I'm definitely a bit biased here. But it makes no sense to me how people in this thread can be dick-riding other party/festival/ignorant/drunk rap music then turn around and blast OLD for doing the same. And better.

Win or lose (not gonna happen), the beef is meaningless to his image and to his sales.

vanbags posted:I don't really want to spend too many words derailing this thread by speculating on who's "real" because that is cornball poo poo, but there's a lot of interesting stuff I would strongly recommend you look into regarding Puffy. He might not be your idea of "hard" in the sense of Gucci Mane squaring up with random dudes in the middle of a mall, but he's well connected and his father Melvin Combs was in business with Frank Lucas and PeeWee Kirkland, who Pusha T famously reminded us was a "legend in two games." His childhood friend and later "bodyguard" Wolf was gunned down for trying to kill Big Meech of all people. And I'm sure you're already familiar with his association with C Gutta and D Roc. The Southside Crips used to run security for him and Biggie when they went out west. that's just you tho.. alansmithee would kick his rear end.

You and McGruff going to teach us how to say no to drugs too? I mean come on at least try to follow here: One rapper calls another soft because he got pissed on. The other rapper makes a living telling people how hard he is and that he's the realest. The reality is that rappers make a living telling stories and most of them involve bravado and exaggeration and even if he got pissed on no one cares though because being tough as a rapper hasn't mattered for commercialism in a decade plus. Kanye has had people ghost write his beats for years ("Down and Out" comes to mind) and his reputation as a visionary producer is intact. Drake will be fine because he has a broad audience and all that audience cares about is if they like the tunes.

d0s posted:Does anyone know/have any articles or something explaining how "urban" radio got like this/the reasoning behind it? I don't remember it being this repetitive when I listened a lot in middle/high school (mid-late 90's). I actually like Fetty but it's not an exaggeration to say he's in every other song right now and certain other songs just get played really heavily to the point where even if you like them it's annoying. It's like radio is trying to get people to turn it off and listen to the MP3s on their phone or something, I'm just wondering what the logic is. I don't notice it nearly as much when I listen to the rock station or whatever.

Besson posted:Kanye has had people ghost write his beats for years ("Down and Out" comes to mind) and his reputation as a visionary producer is intact. How do you ghost write a beat? Do you mean someone else produced or created the beat for him or do you mean someone wrote the hook? Cause if so that's pretty normal in the industry.....producing the track has to be the most farmed out part of making a song for 99% of artists. Pharrell downright tells people what cadence and rhythm to perform their verses/hooks to, and Kanye makes dudes re-write their verses until it matches his vision for the song. Seen that commercial where Dre makes Kendrick stop rapping until he gets it right? Well that kind of stuff happens but its different than borrowing without credit and acting like its yours. You are right though, Drake will be just fine even though.
