We didn't see greasing the taxi guy even working for slamming hotties, we waited 45 min for the taxi. The limos are right there and it was $70 to get wherever you want.

I never stayed in Signature so I have no idea where there entrance is compared to normal MGM or if they use the regular ones but there an AM/PM on Trop and an actual liquor store up the strip that's not a bad walk. They do sell booze in the gift shops of the casino but it's at a premium.

There's a Walgreens on the strip and a CVS across the street from Hard Rock. If I was walking I'd go to the one on the strip. But I don't walk so I'd take a cab to any supermarket

Tower 1 is closest to MGM Grand proper so that's the one I chose to stay at.

Only took a few minutes with the moving walkways.

How different are the signature towers from the normal MGM rooms? Last week I was in the West Wing, and the room was pretty nice for being the cheapest room there. My only complaint was that it was a little bothersome walking through the casino to get to the pool.

I'm not a Vegas expert or anything (only my 2nd trip there that wasn't work related or as a kid), but here's some of the things we did. We're lame and don't do much gambling or clubbing:

Mob Museum: Really cool, if you're at all interested in the history of the mob. Each floor covers another era in mob culture - prohibition days, the Vegas heyday, the law enforcement crackdown after the hearings, etc. It's pretty dense, you'd have to spend all day there if you wanted to read everything. If you don't, it'll take you at LEAST 2 hours to see everything. You can also pick up discounted tickets to the Neon Sign museum if you buy them in a pack, but you have to pick an appointment time for the Neon museum.

Pinball Hall of Fame: Really, really cool. And cheap, for Vegas - no cover charge, you just, well, pay quarters to play pinball. The older classic machines are 1 quarter, 90s-era stuff is 2, and the most recent games are 3 quarters. $10-20 will give you a few hours of entertainment.

The Gun Store: Yes, I did this stupid poo poo. I'm into airsoft, but I've never actually shot a real automatic weapon, so I just decided to blow the money and try it. Their packages seem like a huge rip off - $200 for what amounts to maybe 10 minutes of ammo, if you stretch it out? I paid for just 2 magazines of an Uzi, and that was enough for me. Honestly, if you've never shot an automatic weapon... It's not that big of a deal. Maybe if I had picked an older, clunkier WWII era weapon or something it would have been more fun. Ah well.

The Beatles LOVE Cirque du Soleil: Amazing. I haven't seen any other Cirque shows on the strip, but if they're half as good as this show, they're worth seeing. Even if you're not a Beatles fanatic or anything, it's worth it. I kind of wanted to see Absinthe, but I jumped at this show when I saw I could get 2-for-1 tickets through the MyVegas app.

Kiss Mini-Golf: I actually did this last year, but I wanted to mention it anyway. It's a Kiss-themed indoor miniature golf course. Yes, I mean the rock band Kiss. And yes, the last hole is putting the ball up Gene Simmons' tongue. Of COURSE it is. If you have kids (or don't and just love minigolf, like me), hit it up - it's across the street from the Hard Rock Casino.

MGM Grand's pool: THE. BEST. LAZY. RIVER. Buy your booze outside the pool though, it's crazy expensive in there. They don't care if you bring in outside drinks, they just have you pour them into a plastic cup when you come in.

Also! If you want a massive loving plate of breakfast food that will last you all day, go to Hash House a Go-Go at the Quad. I ordered some of the eggs benedict, and they put a plate of food in front of me that LITERALLY would have filled up 3 very hungry people. And it wasn't even expensive - like $12-15. I had lunch for the rest of the day, but sadly I couldn't finish it because we didn't have a fridge in our room.

Just wanted to reiterate what I said earlier about The Quad - the rooms are still lovely as hell, but the casino is finally looking pretty good, and they have some nice places to eat too. I'm actually worried once they finish remodeling it won't be as cheap - I like having that in the middle of the strip. But then I'd probably stay at the Casino Royal if they had a hotel. It's definitely the Bro casino though, if you can stomach that.

Also, one last note - I'm not sure if this is a new thing, but apparently the Hooters casino always has $3 blackjack, and it's right across the street from MGM Grand. So if you're looking for the closest place to the strip with cheap Blackjack, that may be your best bet.

Sorry, that was really long, and again, I'm totally a Vegas newbie. But I had a ton of fun and I really want to come back again next year. My girlfriend has family in Vegas so we can sometimes stay with them, making it a little cheaper.

kri kri posted:

I liked Hecho en Vegas' happy hour - $5 margaritas, REALLY cheap appetizers, and it's right by the pool. But then that's pretty much my definition of a good bar, you may be looking for something different.

poo poo, you're right... But I just looked up prices, and it's somehow more expensive than The Quad, Harrahs, and Flamingo, even with the resort fees included. So those had better be good discounts they're offering.

So for now, The Quad and Harrahs are still the cheapest places in the middle of the strip, even with the resort fees (as far as I can tell).

No problem - oh, another thing I noticed, Treasure Island is finally getting a revamp. The entire right side with the skull island, where the Siren show used to be (I think) is torn down, and they're building something in its place. Sadly it looks like it's just a casino expansion, not anything cool, but at least it won't be just sitting empty anymore.

All the free shows are going away. Rio used to have one hanging from the ceiling above the casino - you can still see the tracks up there. But it's long gone.

Oh, another thing - anyone interested in trying out the rides at Stratosphere... Be ready to pay. It costs like $20 per person just to go up into the tower (unless you've got a room at the Stratosphere) and then the rides are about $15 each. I stopped by there intending to try one out and balked at the price.

I'm leaving for Vegas in a few hours for a business trip. I won't have a lot of free time but I'd like to play a few low stakes texas hold'em games in the evening. Where would be a good place for this?

Fremont street (downtown) probably. You're not that far from it at Circus Circus, the cheapest way to get there is the Deuce buses.

So tickets for Absinthe (on the day I plan to see it) go on sale on Wednesday.

What's the thinking for ticket prices? I hear it's a super small venue and just get whatever is cheapest because you'll be able to see just fine. Also it looks like a lot of the more expensive ticket options are mostly just a free glass of champagne.

Also, do they ever go on sale or should I just buy them now?

I'd sit closer. There's a significantly better chance of performer/audience interaction the closer you are which is well worth it. They rarely have discounts on tickets.

If you are in the very front row or two there's a decent chance you'll be a part of the show, so consider that. Could be a plus or a minus depending on how you feel about it.

I had seats where we sat at a little table, and got a free drink. Felt slightly less cramped maybe than what the general seating appeared to be, but I wouldn't say it's a huge difference.

For my anniversary trip in October I'll have enough for a comped room at Aria, two premium Cirque tickets and some other 'big' ticket item like bottle service at one of the Aria bars (we aren't big club goes so we'll probably not use that one).

Has anyone actually cashed in their loyalty points and used any of the comps? How does it work, for a free room for instance? Do they send you a promo code to use when booking the room?

Can you buy two comped rooms and use them consecutively at the same resort?

TheReverend
Jun 21, 2005

So they haven't updated the availability calendars yet for October for the rooms so I don't know about that yet.

What I can tell you is I had enough for two premium Zarkana tix so here is how that worked.

-Buy it on facebook.
-They will send an email with a code and a phone number. (You now have 90 days to make a reservation).
-Call the 1-800 number and talk to a rep.
-Tell them what day and what time you want to see the show (note this can be 90+ days from now)
-Your tickets are now booked, non refundable.
-I have to pick up my tickets at the box office by 4pm day of the show.

I currently have paid for reservations at the Aria but if the availability calendar comes out I'll call them, drop a day, and use my MyVegas code to replace that room.

I'm not sure about consecutive days etc but I'll look for ya!.

Rotten Red Rod
Mar 5, 2002

Yeah that was about the same for me for the points I used. With any of the shows, you have to come by the box office before 4 PM to claim your tickets.

You don't have to talk to anyone on the phone for the meal discounts (we got 2 2-for-1 buffets). But you do have to go by the MLife desk at EACH casino you claimed discounts for with your MLife number (or card) and your email confirmation. Then you can go use the discount immediately with your MLife card (which they'll give you at the MLife desk if you don't have one yet).

Room comps are probably the same way - I haven't claimed any of those yet. It's likely you'll have to hit the MLife desk before the reception desk - that's something you can ask about on the phone after claiming your comp, because they MAKE you call to reserve shows or rooms after you claim them in the game.

Need some advice on which last road to take on our return trip from the desert.

Option 1) After taking Northshore Road along Lake Mead heading west, I have the option of taking SR 215 via NV-167 back into Vegas via the southeast. Quick, efficient, looks boring.

Option 2) Take Lake Mead Blvd via NV-167. It appears more elevated and scenic, and approaches the city from the northeast, but it cuts through a part of town I know nothing about.

Final destination is Paris Hotel but I don't mind the longer drive if it is scenic.

Hey guys! I'm having a good time, what about you?

I'm taking a trip in early October with 4 other guys and want to figure out the best room arrangements. Right now we're stuck between getting 2 normal rooms or one larger suite but need recommendations for specific rooms or ways to get a good rate. We'd like to stay close to MGM if possible as that's where our weekend events revolve around. Anyone have any tips?

TheReverend
Jun 21, 2005

Are you trying to win on price?

Are you guys basically going to be partying all the time and just need a place to sleep/shower/poo poo?

Consider getting a Grand Queen room. It'll be two queen beds. You still have the one extra dude I'm not sure what to do with if you go 2 to a bed (since two king rooms would still yield the same result). In fact it looks like the executive queen room (which for the day I'm picking actually costs less than the Grand Queen) has a sofa so there you go?

You generally won't save money getting bigger rooms. It's usually cheaper to get 2 of the single rooms.

The Signature does have two bedroom suites but you have to call them for rate info, I think.

Teeter
Jul 21, 2005

Hey guys! I'm having a good time, what about you?

Sorry, should clarify a bit more. We've done Vegas a fair amount of times, mostly always in the standard room with two queens. There was one time that I went with a larger group that ended up staying in a suite at PH Towers and that was an awesome experience. We had multiple bathrooms, plenty of sleeping space, a fridge for some drinks/snacks, and a living room area that was great for the times when we were getting ready or pre-gaming. Unfortunately I can't seem to find that particular room to have any idea what it ended up costing as a comparison. This time we have one extra person and are all working better jobs so an upgrade from the standard Queen room would be a nice touch for added comfort.

We don't need anything too fancy because time spent in the room will be at a minimum, but since there's 5 of us and we don't mind spending a bit extra we're just wondering what our mid-range options are. Probably looking at anything around $500-1000 for the weekend. That Executive Queen looks like a good option for the time being

Just got back from my first time in Vegas. First impression: a city built on excess. Wow. So many ways to get chewed up and spit out.

We rented a car and went to Valley of Fire State Park near Overton, NV. We got lucky that it rained and was cloudy for most of the morning, something I imagine is probably rare as hell for the Mojave. We drove around and just stopped at different points of interest. Initially we wanted to hike around White Dome but didn't have the time left to do that after having stopped to take pictures elsewhere. Still, all you need for a great vista is to hike 15 minutes into the first gully and 15 minutes back out. We took a dip in Rogers Spring but the warm silty mud was giving us Miamians severe heebie jeebies, but there was a small cataract leading away from the spring where one could sit on the warm rocks and just enjoy the spring water flowing past us. To get to VoF we drove NE out of Vegas on I-15, past Nellis AFB, E across VoF highway then S and then W along North Lakeshore Drive. It was a beautifully scenic drive and we left as soon as the car rental place opened and got back around 4pm. My buddy must have gotten sick about me yammering about Fallout: New Vegas but the game seriously helped with visualizing the lay of the land.

The following day we did the Scoot City tour to Red Rock Canyon. Riding around in the open air was thrilling and I felt connected with the national park the entire time. It would have been a different experience in a rental vehicle (required for VoF, not required for RRC). We stopped at 4-5 points along the 13-mile paved road and did some light hiking. My buddy and I would love to come back and do some deeper, non-guided hiking into the western part of the park (Ice Box Canyon?). They have a brochure at the visitor's center with a list of all the marked trails and their distances and difficulty levels. We didn't see any burros :(

The rest of the experience was on and off the strip. On the last night, within a 20ft radius we had: an NFL player, a girl throwing up, and a whole Mystery Pizza pie.

:hellyeah:
