Don't worry, you will have the equivalent of a colonel psi in like a month without any battles.

Rushing psi labs might be what I do next run since you don't really need weapons and even mediocre stuff like Fuse are incredibly game-changing.

There's an export to character pool button somewhere in the character screen.

Currently you're better off doing retaliation missions by ignoring the civs and trying to find and engage the aliens asap. They will usually prioritize fighting you over killing civvies.

Trying to grab all the civvies and do the intuitive thing will result in more failure because you aren't engaging the guys off screen killing them every turn.

5/6 civs saved = mission fail

No. Terror missions are usually harder but you should still be beating them.

Prioritize rescuing 6 civs, then kill the aliens. As long as you get 6 civs out you win, doesn't matter how many other ones die horribly. A ranger in concealment can help with grabbing civs out from under the aliens noses on the other side of the map, but be wary of faceless. Battle scanners help a lot with this; if you see a big cluster of civs, throw one in to find the faceless.

I just had my first encounter with a sectopod. It was hilarious. It walks into four overwatch shots, the first 3 shots miss, and the fourth hits. And kills it from full health with a repeater proc.

Perestroika
Apr 8, 2010

So, I'm doing some small guerilla mission, nothing too exciting. Managed to kill the first pod easily enough and managed to get almost all the way to the objective. Unfortunately right after completing the objective two pods moved on me in the same turn, and enemy reinforcements were called in on top of that. Play-by-play of my thought process during my next turn:

"Okay, let's see. A codex and two Advent here, no big deal. What's in the other group."
"Oh, I haven't seen this big floating ball before. Lots of health and armour, but shouldn't be too bad."
"Hey, the Codex is pretty close to my specialist and I still have the objective to skulljack one of those. Might as well kill two birds with one stone and get that objective while also taking the codex out right away."

:stare:

:stonk:

:gonk:

I have no idea how, but somehow I got out of that with only one KIA and everybody else gravely wounded. Goddamn that was a close one.

My attitude to seeing something new -- especially giant spaceballs -- is that it's going to kill me if I don't kill it right loving now. Which is pretty true of Gatekeepers. And everything else except maybe Sectoids.

I decided to skulljack a Codex in the middle of a giant firefight, so that was exciting. My Ranger had Serial, though, so it was nbd :smug:

It took until my third Gatekeeper to even see what its attacks looked like, and I don't think I've let a Sectopod fire on my troops more than once. Its certainly never got its massive deathbeam-looking-chargeup attack off on me. Serial might be strictly better than Fan Fire, but a BSOD-toting full-on gunslinger is pretty hilarious to see facing down a Sectopod.

That sounds about right to me. I'll also throw a Mimic Beacon if I can't kill it right away, because I have no loving idea what it does and I don't want a demonstration on my actual guys.

I haven't tried out Guardian yet (that's the multi-overwatch target one) but its alternate, "Ever Vigilant" is pretty sweet too. Automatic overwatch if you just move during the turn. Dash into far cover, instant overwatch. (Covering Fire overwatch, potentially). That's helped me outmaneuver a lot of bad guys.

I just managed to do one of the alien facility missions in 5 turns and without firing a single shot. I got lucky and had the point where you need to place charges on the side near me and I managed to slip my entire squad past all the patrols with zero effort. Had my guy with the highest movement run in and plant the charge on one action and run right back out on the second. Called in an evac and got everyone out while all the enemies were freaking out and moving into position.

Hell, if the game didn't bullshit you and reveal your entire squad the moment you set the charges I probably could've done the mission entirely concealed.

Ok another stupid question.

If a mission's main objective contains the word 'hack', is it literally impossible to complete without a specialist? Because I tried it once and no one could do anything to do the objective, but why does it even let you attempt it with that setup?

You should be able to save characters to the character pool from the memorial as well; I had a pinch where my entire main squad were in the hospital and I had to scrape together a team of rookies to go with a single b-team member to respond to a retaliation mission, and one of the rookies carried that mission before dying valiantly at the end and I'd have liked to send him to character pool valhalla.

Big stupid wall of speculation coming.

I believe there's two different types of Ethereals: The ones seen in The Bureau that are made up of almost entirely energy, and the ones with frail physical bodies we see in EU.

It's my belief that the Bureau Ethereals and EU Ethereals once co-existed (and even had the same form). The Uber Ethereal during the final fight in EU states "Behold the greatest failure… of the Ethereal Ones… We who failed to ascend as they thought we would. We who were cast out..." The Ethereals we fight in EU and XCOM 2 were part of a race that failed to ascend to a higher form, while the Bureau Ethereals managed to ascend. The EU Ethereals probably believe the Bureau Ethereals to be the greatest threat in the universe and all of their efforts are focused on stopping them. They recognize that the commander is being controlled by a Bureau Ethereal and wish to tap into that power, just like how Origin tapped into his own Bureau Ethereal in The Bureau. However, the EU Ethereals are handling the commander with kid gloves compared to Origin since they know firsthand the power of the Bureau Ethereals and do not wish to "let the genie out of the bottle."

XCOM 3 is going to be about the Bureau Ethereals, possibly using some sort of underwater race to fight the humans from below.

I was kind of hoping they'd pretend The Bureau never happened but

I guess that explains why every time some poo poo fucks with your consciousness you see that ethereal dude pop up and do some psi wizard poo poo

Honestly, I don't remember how well EU multiplayer ran. I remember thinking it was pretty fun and with some more polish could be a really cool feature though.

Xcom 2 multiplayer sure as hell isn't polished though. I bet any bug that exists in the campaign exists here as well, on top of some ones exclusive to it. Basic stuff like the turn timer seems to glitch out on a regular basis. The game also seems to handle two players being in control poorly; sometimes it gives me vision of enemy units when I definitely should not have it.

But goddamn when it actually works its so much fun. Being able to take all the aliens from single player under your wing is a blast. The new terrain destruction is amazing for multiplayer since it lets you gently caress with so many tactics that people rely on in single player. You know how you always want to grab the high ground? In multiplayer its usually the opposite. Grabbing the high ground is an invitation to get your squad blown through the floor by a grenade. Its hilarious.
