Has any candidate for office ever just done away with all pleasantries and gone "gently caress it, vote you me you dumb rear end or you'll loving regret it as my opponent is a total piece of poo poo who will make your life miserable and if you vote for him you deserve it you fucker." Because that approach just might work in today's political climate.

Turtlicious posted:I mean, if you have no way of protecting yourself it's easy enough to out produce a pile of craters and nuclear fallout. My point is, every wedge trump drives between the US and Europe is only going to benefit Russia. If you imagine the very extreme and thankfully unlikely situation of a state of cold war between the US and the EU, the EU would just be forced to become a vassal state of Russia in order to get under the nuclear umbrella(or/and because of pressure from Russia), in which case everyone but Russia loses(but the US loses the most). Even the refusal of trump to reassure his adherence to Nato article 5 is a big win for Russia. It could allow and even provoke Russia to continue it's aggresive expansion and seeing that the EU would not be in a position to win a landwar against Russia and never will be, could lead to the EU being forced to make concessions to Russia that would put the US in a very precarious and isolated position. if trump continues with his policy towards Nato and his allies the biggest loser will be The US itself. The reason why Putin is playing trump like this is not because of his interest in the US but because of his interest in the EU and Russias terretorial expansion. demonicon fucked around with this message at 00:11 on May 31, 2017 |

BUT MUSLIMS DID 9/11, FACT YOU LIBRUL PUSSY! Not sure what we need to do to get people to a point where they can actually honestly discuss things and actually consider what other people are saying even if they have a view that's opposite yours. Was there ever a time when that was a normal thing to do? It seems like now most people are only listening to find a mistake or a something they twist to make it seem like you're contradicting yourself or just planning their next verbal attack instead of actually listening and considering what they're saying. Plenty of people all over the political spectrum do this, but of course I think the right is the biggest offender, they've basically turned themselves into the pro-ignorance party. I'm not saying having honest and constructive discussions will lead to some rainbow utopia but people in general are incapable of having a political discussion without it turning into a huge fight so we aren't even "allowed" to talk about politics in "polite" company now because Lord knows if you don't agree on something that MUST mean you're calling the other person a moron.

I've tended to assume Greenwald just has a massive blindspot when it comes to Russia being bad because he's the type of anti-imperialist who thinks it's more important to focus on our country being bad, even at the expense of ignoring worse behavior by other countries. I still think that's most likely the case, with some added cognitive dissonance based on defending his previous actions, but it's hard not to see him as, at least, a useful idiot who parrots the same kind of rhetoric as actual Russian puppets like Assange. I'm not quite at the Louise Mensch jumping at shadows and calling everyone an actual Russian puppet just for having bad opinions stage yet, but the way Greenwald and others continue to downplay the Russia story, even as details continue to leak out all the time, is pretty sketchy.
