I had that sort of happen on an 88 Accord - except it went from blowing semi-cool air (and no odd noises) to "why did the engine just stall? why is it struggling to turn over? Oh neat it starte HOLY MOTHER OF gently caress WHAT'S ALL THIS SMOKE AND SCREECHING oh the sound stopped but now there's half of a smoking belt on the ground". Got the car to the MR2/Toyota specialist. He pointed out a laundry list of flaws with the car, said it was a bit of a hatchet job and shamed me for installing my intercooler without proper bracing. Really impressive how many things he was able to spot just with few quick glances. Apparently there's a bolt completely missing from my shift bracketry on the transmission and it is grossly mis-positioned, was surprised that I wasn't having any problems with it. Quoted me $500 parts + labor for a brand new oem starter. He says its a bit of a basket case but $5,000 was the right price for it. Should have an answer by mid morning.

I forget, was yours a 1UZ or 1J? Still a massive fan of them! 1JZ - swapped my aging 2nd gen Rx7 for it and apart from catching up with a few things the PO overlooked (oil, coolant had turned from red to brow, belt, oxy sensor - he was more concerned with how the stereo sounded it seems) and some 'interesting' wiring it's been rock solid with 226k on the dial. If you're handy with spanners or know someone who is they can be great bargains as parts are plentiful and lots of support online. Just make sure you check for the usual soarer hiccups like oil smoke, power steering leaks and in the Uz's case a dying alternator caused from too much power steering fluid consumption... Funnily enough I wanted the v8 version originally but the twin turbos really changed my mind and would be hard to give up... Latest thing done - relocated the boost gauge on the weekend. The PO had put it on the right hand side of the centre console, obscured by the steering wheel. God only knows why it was there - to see it while driving you'd have to be eye level with the steering wheel or headbutt the horn. Plus I'd smash my knee into in constantly which was infuriating. Now it's IN the console and properly wired in so it lights up at night when I would like it to and not the other way around.

Worst case it's my backup set anyways, I have regular painted ones still in the process of finishing up. These were originally meant to be those but got hosed up early on while painting so I decided to just have a little fun with it. I'd be fine with repainting eventually cause I did a really bad job of laying down the paint, doing it with a brush was a bad idea . On the plus side I have plenty of paint left for other stupid projects!

Did something that makes any real car nut cringe - ran it through a tunnel wash on the way to work. Opted for their high end wash with ~CARNAUBA WAX~, tire shine, etc - this was around 3pm. Wound up raining around midnight - but found out they actually use a wax that sticks, something I've never seen in any kind of drive through or manual car wash. Everything beaded up and ran off the car; I haven't given it an actual wax since August, nothing has beaded/run off in several months. Instead of it being sprayed on, it just runs off of a waterfall-thing halfway through. Gonna go back there when I get paid to get an actual detail done on it, including shampooing the upholstery and a hand wax. It smells something awful thanks to doing delivery for most of the past year. Need to track down another set of OEM floormats too, I've worn 3 holes through the drivers mat (one under each pedal), and hate most aftermarket mats (Weathertech doesn't make a set for my car). I really hate detailing work in general, and especially hate trying to get into every nook and cranny of a dash (yay for a black interior); I'll gladly pay someone to do that for me.

The v8 first gen RX-7 project continues. Last night I got the driveshaft back and installed. Weirdly enough, the driveshaft did not need to be cut short, just swapped universal joints. The headers got here and will clear the steering box without modification. Hopefully today the welding shop will have the flanges I'm having them weld on the radiator done so I can maybe get that installed tonight.

Replaced my front disks and pads on the 406 today. I meant to take photos throughout the process, it being my first time, but it ended up taking about 5 hours due to having to borrow tools (drat torx bolts) and assistance (drat fiddly bits) but everything worked out okay in the end. Now I can brake without the front of the car juddering violently. Next up: Finding the pesky gearbox sensor and sorting my speedo out.

Toyota specialist-guy finally got to work on my car this morning. He had a lot to say. First off, the motor isn't toast which is good news. Bad news is, he wants to completely redo my engine wiring harness. Even after pulling the EFI fuse apparently the injectors "click." He turned the motor over and each cylinder blasted gasoline across his shop onto other peoples' cars. So there's definitely something funky going on with the wiring. I'm gonna be destitute for the next few weeks I'm betting.

Are they truly set up as mpfi/smpfi or is it toyota's retarded "we are going to put an injector in for each cylinder and then wire them all in parallel so it is the worst of both tbi and mpfi in one horrible mess" system like they used on the 3vz-e? Because that would explain it pretty easily. A screwy ground or something and the main relay staying on could easily cause what you describe even with true smpfi, though.

Full detail day! It was the first nice weekend since September so I decided to tackle the paint swirls, scratches, and the pound of winter road treatment embedded in my floormats. Backstory - the dealership did a particularly lovely job prepping the car when I bought it and they knocked the price down some because it was so swirly. I also was lazy/dumb and took it through automated carwashes all winter (won't do that again!) Crossposting from the detailing thread, here are the results (sorry no before pictures): I started at 9 am and finished the interior and exterior at 5 pm. I am beat, but the car looks great. 98% of the defects are gone, and the remaining are so fine and hard to see it wasn't worth bothering.

That at least had the excuse of being a 1st-gen EFI system, plus hlaf the problem was that the intake runners were half the area of the ports on the actual heads. CPI came out in the 90s when MPFI was becoming commonplace, there was no reason for it to exist. At least we can all agree that Chevy is #1 in bad ideas.

Fucknag posted:Batchfire multiport injection is the second dumbest idea ever, right behind chevy's CPI they used on the later 4.3s. Don't worry, they (Toyota on the 3VZ-E) combined it with a cold start injector and an EGR system known for pumping the intake manifold full of carbon and sludge, then wrapped the exhaust manifold for the passenger side up and OVER the bellhousing, you know, just in case the #6 cylinder wasn't getting hot enough already. So just in case you don't have bad enough fuel economy with the batch fire injectors, they add the cold start one to ruin things on winter mornings, then choke the engine with wads of coked up crap in the manifold and BBQ the passenger head gasket with the exhaust. A truly wonderful design.

Previous owner seems to have had some very....particular taste. Had to replace 5 bulbs in my car today to pass safety inspection. Four of which I'm pretty sure have never actually worked and I wasn't even aware existed, who knows how I passed inspection with them previously. Two in my headlights and two in my taillights, pretty sure they are called signalling lamps and their only function seemed to be to slightly illuminate the far corners of my headlight/taillight housings. In order to do reach said bulbs I had to disassemble half of my front fender liners and like half of the trunk, how in the world do you guys remove those little black plastic push rivets without completely destroying them? If I so much as touched them with a screwdriver they simply shattered into a million tiny pieces.

Update on my MR2. Guy thinks that my chitty alarm must have some kind of remote starter component built into it and its causing the ECU to stay turned on and it in turn is keeping the injectors going even with the key out. Should be a tad less expensive than a full rewire which is good. He mentioned that the wiring wasn't quite as desperately bad as he had originally thought.
