I think Loomer meant Dark Destiny. I wanted to get a copy of it a while back so I was looking into it, and there's an e-book only reprint of it on Amazon with an extra story by Dracula. I ended up buying a hard copy of the second volume by mistake (I thought I was buying regular Dark Destiny when I had instead bought Dark Destiny: Proprietors of Fate), which is occasionally great fun but if it's declared canon on a re-print like Dark Destiny seems to be, the result would be completely and utterly bonkers. This is the volume with the story he mentioned about where Jesus was Embraced. It also has Joan of Arc be manipulated and eventually Embraced by Vampires, and Napoleon attempting a mass-scale invasion of the Shadowlands with the ghosts of the Grande Armee.

I wish I had known about who Edward E. Kramer was before I bought this book, though. Holy poo poo, I hope he didn't get any money from me buying a "new" out-of-print copy.

Scion update: 203k.

quote:

Our next preview is of some of the Knacks in the game. Knacks are powerful, but (usually) not overly supernatural powers that key off the Callings, the mythic and archetypal associations of the Scions themselves - your Warriors, your Sages, your Lovers. Many Knacks key off one another, allowing Scions who invest in these Knacks to become highly adept at their chosen Calling. We’ve chosen three Hunter Knacks to show how this keying-off works. Enjoy!

Heroic Hunter
At the Mortal level, Hunter knacks improve your ability to pursue and track a target and avoid detection when on the hunt. Immortal Hunter knacks make you impossible to flee, and grant you power over beasts.
Apex Predator: Choose an enemy to be your quarry. When you pursue your quarry, gain +1 Enhancement to all rolls made against the target (including attack rolls) until the end of the session or until you catch them, whichever comes first.
Keen-Eyed Predator: Gain +1 Enhancement to all perception-based rolls. When you hunt your quarry, this bonus increases to +2.
Supernal Hunter: While pursuing a target, you do not face any increase in Difficulty to track down your target, even if he were to take flight, hide in a body of water, or attempt to disappear into the back alleys of a crowded city. You always have some idea of where your target has gone, and you gain +1 Enhancement to keep up with him. When you hunt your quarry, add another +1 Enhancement.
Sidebar: The Digital Predator
Like Creator Knacks, Hunter Knacks do not need a literal stalked target. Figurative hunting -- be it chasing down a malevolent kami in construction plans or pursuing a black hat hacker through a mainframe -- allows you to use Hunter Knacks. So long as there is opposition, it’s sufficient for Hunters to pursue.

Scion: 206k.

New preview - the Kitsune path, an Origin-level shapeshifter character type.

quote:

Hello again! Here’s yet another preview. This time, we’re showing off a Path - the Kitsune’s Origin-level.

Paths allow you to ground yourself in the World and the setting. They also come with permissions, or the ability to take supernatural powers as Knacks. If your own Path resembles a Path within the setting, you’ll get a permission to take powers from those other Paths. A powerful woman warrior of the Æsir sworn to Odin has permissions to take from the Valkyrie Path, while a Scion of Inari gains access to the Kitsune Path, enabling them to select Knacks and otherwise benefit from the Path. A Scion of Inari could select Knacks from the Kitsune list, even if they don’t have the Liminal or Trickster Callings.

Animal Path: Kitsune
Of course I love you, dear. By the way, could you spare a few thousand for me to go shopping? I know you like me to look my best.

The World is full of such fabulous experiences, and you want to enjoy them all. Of course, your means are limited — at least, until you find someone you can charm or con into indulging your whims. You may care for her in your own way, but in the end, she's just one more experience. She's no more than a fine meal, a bottle of wine, or a weekend at Monte Carlo: something soon to become a pleasant memory.

You don't like to be reminded that you're a fox who turns into a person rather than the other way around. You keep your tail hidden as best you can, but it's harder as the centuries go on and you grow more and more of them. You’re devoted, but when you're discovered (and you always are, eventually), you cast aside your current toy and move on. There are always more out there.

Relationships: members of exclusive clubs, former lovers, casino managers
Edges:
  • Creature (Foxes): Followers of this Path may keep mundane foxes as messengers, enjoying the effects of the Tongue of Beasts Knack (limited to foxes).
Asset Skills: Persuasion, Subterfuge
Origin Knacks:
  • Shapeshifter (one human form only, Antagonist Knack)
-> Imperfect Disguise (fox's tail, Antagonist Drawback)
  • A Friend in Every Port (Liminal Knack)
  • Master of Dissimulation (Trickster Knack)

Wrestling is over! We had some stream crashes so it's split into three videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHV3_XkF_1w
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1U37qDsm63E

Highlights:
Luke Lord, the Prince of the Trailer Park, goes up against Varney. Against all expectations, he goes the distance, using every trick he has to not only survive the first Frankenstein's power but to defeat him.
Lucy Sulphate, stinging from her loss last week, takes Aeshma on in a brutal rematch. Lucy reasserts the power of the Pentacle, defeating the young Seer. After the match, she offers a genuine handshake, but Aeshma rejects it, storming out of the ring. #jointheseers is still trending on Twitter.
Mahmoud Walks-From-The-Light continues to seek his revenge on Johnny Shadow, but his rage blinds him. While he puts on a good showing, Johnny's ruthless cunning against defeats him. Johnny mocks Mahmoud after the match, offering 'friendship' that the Egyptian Uratha rejects.
Oleg Chernenko and Tsar Bomba continue to test each other to see who is the true master of destruction. Again, Oleg outwits the Chernobyl powerhouse and defeats him. He is vicious in victory, offering Tsar Bomba the chance to serve him. The elder Zeky rejects this offer entirely, storming from the ring in rage.
The Horned Hunter makes an appearance at the end of the show, emerging from the crowd to declare his desire to hunt and recapture any Changelings taking refuge in the wrestling company. The Nemean accepts his challenge, and the two perform a long, vicious match. While the Nemean emerges triumphant, the Hunter takes two tombstone piledrivers and a chokeslam before he will finally admit defeat.

Got a double dose for you today! Well, one and a half doses.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlCwmYPDwxM

For the main show, highlights:
Mother Damnable faces off against Alice Sewell, a rough-and-ready Gangrel. The Unholy decides to watch, and the two get into an argument mid-match. Alice takes advantage of this and then presses her advantage as hard as she can, putting in some solid work for a solid win over the former champ.
Burn Barrel Matty and Billy Reed try once more to dethrone Money and Power, the tag team of Weldon Fontaine and Josiah Stone. They lose again, but they're learning how to actually work together - something they sorely need, given how well Money and Power operate together.
Luke Lord, Prince of the Trailer Park, takes on Maxwell Clarke, Prince of Chicaco. Clarke gives Lord every advantage in order to make an example, allowing him to stand up and return to the fight three times before finally putting the upstart down for the count.
Aurelius pins two men simultaneously to win a triple threat - Adamantine Arrow mage Recce and werewolf Victor Lawrence, AKA the Saint.
After a long and powerful match, Count loving Dracula defeats his tentative friend, Bishop Birch, building some more tension as we get closer to the PPV.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViI_Y6yRZwU

We also put on a minor show - only three fights. Highlights:
Carl puts up a valiant fight, nearly defeating brutal Detroit werewolf Stefan Ellis. He does not, however, manage to win.
The Old Firm (Anne Katherine Blake and Katherine Anne Blake), a pair of werewolf twins who believe they share a single soul, go up against Mirrormatch (Frances Black and her reflection). It is a very confusing match for the ref, as both tag teams consist of essentially identical members. In the end, Frances and Mirror Frances end up taking the win thanks to their trust in each other.
The Unholy, current women's champion, faces off against rising star Lucy Sulphate. It's a close match, but a last-minute comeback by Lucy earns her the win.

E: Also, Scion update: 210k. Sixth story for the fiction anthology confirmed.

Scion update: 212k.

Tuatha preview up.

The Tuatha are notable for being more likely than most to adopt the Scions of others. The core pantheon they're going with is Aengus the Mac Og (god of love and youth), Brigid (goddess of fire and inspiration), the Dagda (All-Father, god of knowledge and magic), Danu (mother of the gods), Dian Cecht (god of healing), Donn (god of the dead), Eriu (goddess of land and sovereignty), Lugh Lamhfhada (god of excellence, skill and arts), Manannan mac Lir (god of the sea and passage to otherworlds), the Morrigan (goddess of prophecy and war), Nuada Airgeadlamh (god of wise rule) and Ogma (god of strength and language).

Aengus is a schemer and plotter, called on by the other gods to help them woo others, and he was born in weird circumstances thanks to the Dagda's magic - the Dagda made the sun stand still for nine months so Aengus would be born in one day. As a result, his Scions also often tend to be born or created weirdly. He also likes birds and punishing traitors or those that would separate lovers with terrible vengeance. He runs a difficult-to-find but exceptionally reputable dating site and hosts a nightly radio show that advises the lonely. He also works as the head of a law firm that exclusively takes pro bono divorce cases for those that deserve the aid, if they can find it.

Brigid is three sisters and one woman, descended from the primordial sun. As one woman, she was wife to the half-Fomor Bres and fought alongside the Tuatha against the Fomorians. As three, she is the sisters of fire - hearth healer, inspiring spark and fiery smith. Her children tend to reflect her multiple nature. They are as often incarnated as born, and they have a tendency to be caretakers, instigators or causes of change. They build art and weapons and bonds and music. Oscar Wilde is namedropped as her most famous Scion.

The Dagda is both revered for his knowledge and power and mocked as a fuzzy, goofy oaf. He's had many lovers - so many they can't be counted. He is believed to be the father of Brigid and Aengus, among others, and fosters many orphans. He's hard for non-Tuatha to understand, because he is both a fierce hedonist as well as the sage and most potent sorcerer of the sidhe. He knows far more than he appears to, and he is master of any feat without effort. His children, too, are untrained prodigies and savants. He is a battle-god, a god of fertility and more. He's got a magic cauldron that can feed any number, he can build forts, he can fight and strategize and heal and slay with his club. His children are advisors, turots and trainers...for a price. His personal realm is a great library, accessible from certain other libraries in the world.

Danu is the namesake of the Tuatha, but she is elusive and distant. She has little interest in divine struggle, even that of her children, but she does have Scions. They rarely know why she created them. Danu is a goddess of rivers and earth, mostly, and chooses her Scions from humans or builds them from earth. She rarely bears them as children,. though it isn't impossible. These scions are sought for help with nature spirits and wilderness trouble, and even in cities they rule the forgotten places where the homeless and animals gather. When Danu is seen directly, it always heralds conflict with great titanspawn. Some believe her children are natural profits, but in truth they tend to be the ones scrambling to puzzle out Danu's warnings rather than prognosticating. The Fomorians hate the Scions of Danu with a terrible fury, and often comne after them.

Dian Cecht, grandfather of Lugh, is the greatest healer of the Tuatha and one of their eldest. He built the silver arm of Nuada when that god lost his original one...but it was his son Miach that regrew Nuada's true arm, showing greater skill. Dian Cecht slkew his son in a rage and, ever since, their relation's been rather strained. Dian Cecht enjoys building Scions out of divine prosthetics as much as he does fathering them. He is a fighter as well as a healer, and his children tend to be skilled doctors, scientists and occultists. They also tend to be exceptionally nosy. Dian Cecht's sacred places are wells, sewers and other manmade waterways, and can be used to enter his domain or to heal the worthy. He also cares for certain hospitals, which produce almost perfect prosthetics.

Donn is not a true Tuatha, but a the Gael that led the invasion that drove the gods from Ireland. He was rude and disrespectful, and so was cursed to never enjoy Ireland's hospitality. When he tried to fight, his ship was wrecked and he drowned, washing up on a promontory now known by his name, and he became the shepherd of the dead. He is regal, yes, but also deeply petty. He resents the Gaels and their Irish descendants for claiming Ireland when he could not. He pronounces judgment over the dead and rarely explains his reasoning, which most believe is ultimately down to his first impressions of the souls that visit him. He is angry, sulky and violent, but respected for his dedication to proper hospitality and royal behavior. His children tend to be hosts - hotel managers, organizers, the runners of shelters, even spirit mediums. They deal with disputes and hauntings, and while others mock them as pretenders, ti is never to their faces. They are, after all, as elegant and vicious as Donn.

Eriu is another triple-goddess - the sisters Eriu, Banba and Fotla, the god-queens of Ireland and its voice. She is the most common of the Tuatha to be found among mortals, and she cares deeply about the lives and reputation of the Irish and those connected to them. She works tirelessly to spread cheer and good works. Her triple collective is the ruler of sovereignty and homeland, and they were the vanguard against the Fir Bolg, though it's never been clear why they allied with the Tuatha. Eriu was lover to a Fomorian and mother to Bres, who became king after Nuada. Since then, she pushes others to lead and rule, and since the destruction of the Stone of Fal by Cu Chulainn, Scion of Lugh, she has been the gods' main means of influencing mortal power dynamics. Her children can be politicians, but are just as often plotters and manipulators. They tend to be deeply territorial and protective of what they see as theirs, taking vengeance on insults and harm, and overseeing judgment on land and inheritance claims. Eriu and her sisters are the goddess that blesses land tamed by humanity, as opposed to Danu's rule over unbound nature.

Lugh Lamhfhada, the Long-Handed, is often said to be the god of not any thing but everything. This is only slightly exaggerated. He is half-Fomori and tried to bring peace...but where Bres ultimately sided with the titanspawn Fomorians, Lugh stood with the Tuatha. He had many gifts that he now passes on to his Scions, and he is the god of excellence. He has mastered all skills and all arts, but when he tried to join the Tuatha, he found they already had a god of each, so he finally laid claim to being the god of all, and so was accepted as leader. He knows secret sorcery and can use the mystic powers of his Fomorian cousins...as can his children. His most famous child, Cu Chulainn, is a notable example. His children tend to be overachievers, champions, athletes and builders. They work hard at everything they do, but it looks easy, and their use of Fomorian powers tend to make other pantheons uneasy.

Manannan mc Lir is the sea-god who governs passage to the Tuatha otherworld, Tir na nOg. He was foster father to Lugh and gave him many treasures, and he is generous not only to his own Scions, but to any that impress him. He divided the fairy realms between the gods, as he knows them well, and he splits his time between ferrying the worthy to their proper underworld and wandering the world to prank mortals. His children are guides, both of the world and the Otherworld. They are rarely straightforward, however, either by choice or because they tend to get caught up in the schemes of others. They stumble onto mysteries alarmingly often.

The Morrigan is yet another triple-goddess - more, even. She is Morrigu of nightmare, Badb of war, Macha and Nemain and Anand. She is the Morrigna. And they are all her. She rules the battlefield, and her prophecies are always dire, her magic always of confusion and fear. She takes other shapes easily, and even her favor is dangerous. However, she was instrumental in taking Ireland, and while she is meddlesome, her favor in battle is powerful. Soldiers and biker gangs use her imagery on their tanks, jets and bikes. Her children are boardroom warriors, masters of internet trolling and champions of freedom of expression as well as, obviously, powerful fighters in battle. They are never sorry about what they are, and they are always those that act both in their own best interests and allow fate to guide them. Their true motives are hard to tell, and they are hard to trust, but they know their mother's law: never start a war, always end one. They may be dark, cryptic, even dangerous - but their loyalty is absolute once given, for good and evil.

Nuada Airgetlam of the Silver Hand was the first king of the Tuatha and still commands them easily. He stepped down only because he lost his arm, and he took the throne once more after Bres' betrayal and the construction of his new arm. Now, he rules only his sidhe realm, where he is loved and respected. His children are sought for advice or blessings of wealth and power. They tend to seek justice and prosperity, serving as judges, cops, activists, therpaists and businesspeople. They especially tend to champion the rights of the disabled and point to Bres as an example of why sometimes an old tradition that needs to be changed, even if their kin cling to these ways.

Ogma, the Champion of the Gods, is the one who fights by duel and contest for honor. He is technically a full Fomorian, but has always stood with the Tuatha. He was first Nuada's champion, than Lugh's. His is the realm of physical power and great feats, and his Scions tend to attach themselves to leaders whom they can serve with equal power. He is, however, no mere muscleman. He is also a god of writing, eloquence, poetry and history. He invented the ogham script, used by bards and druids to communicate secretly and to create magical marvels. His children are big on personal responsibility and presevation of the past as well as championing causes. Thy are rarely leaders, more often seconds in command. They are modern bards, often environmentalists or bodyguards. They are competitive, but prefer to serve others.

The worship of the Tuatha continues in the modern day as ind iress, 'the faith.' It is highly regional and has no great organization, and its priests are always poets and scholars who know much about the fae and the local landscape. They celebrate the seasons and know when and how to seek a god's blessing or avoid a god's curse.

The primary Titans that lead the Fomorians against the Tuatha are: Balor of the Evil Eye (lord of plague and poison), Bres the Beautiful (former king of the Tuatha and lord of misers), Crom Cruach (who is not actually a Fomorian at all, but some kind of strange creature that is lord of agriculture and curses those that do not appease him), Domnu (mother of monsters and counterpart to Danu) and Elatha the Golden-Haired (the only beautiful Fomorian and relatively noble and whimsical as Titans go).

The Tuatha tend to see the Aesir as long-lost cousins, but they have a rough relationshop with the Plant Don of Wales due to their pride - they see the Welsh gods (from whom we get Avalon and Arthur) and the Gallic gods as their siblings, trying to outdo them at every turn. There's actually a running theory that these three pantheons were actually all once a giant band of Scions from some long-extinct pantheon, who ascended and split the Gaelic lands between them. If so, this might be a key to restoring the Gauls' gods to their former glory. The Tuatha also very much dislike the Theoi - they hold a long, long grudge towards the Greco-Roman gods for reasons that may not actually be true. The Fir Bolg were enslaved while in exile to Greece, y'see, and the Irish have just assumed that Zeus and his family did it.

The Tuatha are primarily occupied with fighting the cults of the Fomorians, who are unleashing more and more titanspawn against the sidhe and trying to control their people. They also work to support and spread traditional Irish culture in the world, particularly in the form of language, music and story, and are v. big on archaeology.

The Tuatha Virtues are Honor and Prowess. Honor is wise rulership and strength of character - generosity, hospitality, providing ofr others. The Honorable hero is fair and never breaks a given word, showing courtesy even to enemies. Prowess is strength of arms and warriorship. A hero with Prowess is proud, strong and fearless. They never allow an offense to go unanswered and excel at anything they try. They are always confident, on or off the field, and they must always choose and stick with a side. There is no room for hesitation in Prowess. Give your best or go home.

The signature Purview of the Tuatha is Geasa - blessings, curses, oaths, mandates and so on that give power when upheld and curse doom when broken. Scions can inflict geasa on others to bind foes in webs of promise, but also must obey permanent geasa of their own.

Still love some of the stuff from the Mandate of Heaven since it applies to any social power structure which includes not only bureaucrats, but also police, mobsters and even simple cliques. The gods themselves would probably be at the mercy of this since families are a hierarchy of their own.

I'd also expect Jackie Chan to be a scion of the Monkey King

Scion update: 219k.

The Algonquin pantheon, called the Manitou, were written by the guy who did Ehdrigohr, who is mixed-race Lakota.

quote:

While I knew a lot about my own tribe’s myths and spirits, I was considerably fuzzier on what was being called Algonquian. I knew a lot of people from both Anishinaabe and Six Nations (Iroquois) traditions. A couple were storytellers; most were people who know an anecdotal story about a spirit or two. So I decided I would reach out to some of them to figure out some good sources for these characters, and try to access versions of stories that weren’t kid’s tales, weren’t too Christianized, and weren’t New Age-ified pan-Indian strangeness. That’s a tall order. There is a great tendency to just have “Native American” stories with no real attention or respect paid to the fact that we have greatly varying cultures and religions. Even though there may be overlaps, there are distinct differences.

After looking at the cultural area I was tasked to target, I quickly realized I needed to focus in on a culture, with my choices being basically Anishinaabe or Iroquois. There was this interesting overlap cosmologically, but the cultures went in different directions with spiritual beliefs, spirit relationships, and stories of gods and divine things. On top of that, there were so many variations to sort through. Despite all the variations, I was going to have to pick one main stream of “truth” and focus on that AND make it fit into the conceits and fictions of the new Scion setting.

I managed to connect with my friend Elizabeth Lapensee (Anishinaabe/Metis/Irish) who is very well schooled on the Anishinaabe myths and whose opinion I respect greatly. We talked about many of the spirits and interpretations. She takes inspiration from her own traditions for most of her work as an artist, writer, blogger, and game designer. She pointed me at some work her mother, a folklorist, has done, which widened my perspective on her people’s stories.

I also talked a bit with my friend Eli Suzokovich (Cree/Serbian), an artist, folklorist/storyteller, and ethno-botanist to get his take on how to approach some of the stories. I settled in on Basil Johnston’s telling of stories, Manitous: Spiritual World of the Ojibway, the Ojibwe versions of the myths, as the foundation to work from. I further supplemented with online sources, books from my library, and my own experience from connecting with the material I was running for my kids back in the day. I especially liked Basil’s stuff, because his name spellings were mostly phonetic, making it accessible for non-Aanishinaabemowin speakers to sort out how to say them. He does a great job of bringing out the heroism of the characters he’s writing about.

From there, I built out the characters, focusing on a core set, to fit into the fiction of Scion but still, hopefully, maintain their cultural truths. I’ve built in connections to the character variants, and overlaps with the Iroquois versions (including two twin gods) while acknowledging that the Six Nations version of these myths are a different beast that I’m still addressing. Overall, I was approaching this work from a living, breathing, Native eye. Even the Manitou signature character, Rose Aishquaykezhick-White, reflects this: she’s inspired by some good friends of mine.

I’m feeling good about it. They definitely speak to what was fun about some of those characters for me and the kids back in the day when I use to run their adventures. It’s not perfect. It’s kind of hard to fit thousands of years of culture into 8000+ words, but I feel like it’s a good start. Hopefully, it will get some of my Native relatives to be inspired to find ways to bring their own spirits and stories into their experience of Scion. Neall’s said he wants me to tackle some other Native pantheons, including my own Lakota pantheon, in the future.

Also, apparently the Greek stuff was by Kieron Gillen from the start??? At least, that's a rumor I'm hearing.

Yo this is loving awesome, and I am really happy they went this hard on the paint to do justice to cultures that get misrepresented so often.
