I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but after wondering what the hell was going on with the Blood + Doom (BLOOM) crossover mod for a few years now, it turns out that the final version released over Halloween:

Thanks for the reminder, I watched recently the trailer for the release date and ended forgetting it :haw:

Best part about Blood was the fact that it shipped with a vicious bug that made enemies do double damage if you quick saved on the easiest difficulty :)

I don’t really care for quicksaving personally. I like to complete levels from start to finish in most fps games.

^^^ All the aspects of Doom that make it feel like an early 90's DOS shareware platformer are the aspects of Doom I love the most.

Glagha posted:

I have beef with "actually enjoy it", because you can totally play Blood on normal difficulties, but you do have to adjust your mindset, and mostly for the first episode where it's really cultist heavy. Especially That Room in map 5 I think it was. You get used to it though, but if you wanna lower cultist aggression that's not a terrible idea it definitely makes the game less frustrating in parts.

Blood on Well Done and Extra Crispy are like two completely different kinds of game, the former is more of a fun run & gun game ala Doom and the latter is a tense mil sim tacticool shooter where you're peeking around walls while prone and chucking TNT around corners preemptively. I'm an unrepentant purist so I only really play with the default difficulties but I still think Blood is a pretty flawed game and Made to Order somewhat addresses a couple of those flaws in a way that makes the game a bit better, even if I'm not consistently going to take advantage of it myself. It's still good for terribly balanced mods so it's a great feature across the board for that.

I didn't like Blood until the fresh supply version where I can modify difficulty. Turn down cultist accuracy and reaction time but increase the amount of enemies to max keeps a challenge but in a fun way, not in a turn a corner and instantly die way.

Has Not Actually Done Cocaine
The main flaw that the Build Engine games near universally have is that they make the player way too squishy(and the enemies not squishy enough) for the scenarios they present(Duke's a badass 80's Action Hero, Lo Wang is a badass Ninja, Caleb is a badass Undead Cowboy, and the Redneck Rampage guys are just plain too stupid and stubborn to die), leads to having to employ way more thought and strategy than should be required by a single player FPS

My complaint with the Build games is that enemies can have some really fucky hitboxes.

Same. Build games are cool (well Duke and Blood, don’t really care for the rest) but I won’t go back to them nearly as much as with Doom.

Yeah I crank the enemy count all the way but bump down the damage they deal. I still die a lot but it feels way less frustrating.

Why don't you perform zazen, facing a wall?
“Cursed undead warrior tortures himself by rising from his grave repeatedly to slaughter demons” is definitely the right vibe for the story of a Build game.

I’m surprised no one ever used Build to make a heavy metal/medieval fantasy type thing. Seems like it would have been a good fit

I guess Witchaven but ugh

It's a shame they can't update Fresh Supply anymore though because "Atari" apparently just doesn't want it to happen, there's still issues with co-op

I wish one of these big lottery winners would buy Blood from Atari and give it to Night Dive. I know I would.

The Kins

IIRC Atari only has the distribution rights to Blood, I think they were able to make Fresh Supply happen through a contractual loophole as a "compatibility update" or something. IIRC the actual IP rights etc. are held by Warner Bros., the current owners of Monolith, and they don't get out of bed for anything any developer or publisher who cares about that series would call reasonable.

SCheeseman

A bit dumb of them. Blood has more relevancy and holds up better as an IP today than Shadow Warrior or even Duke, it's a shame to let it rot. Also odd considering how happy WB seem to be to exploit their old IPs in new media.

Remember 2.5d shooters were done... for around 3-4 years only. After that the focus was put in 3d shooters. And in that time gaming was smaller market with fewer dev companies than now is.

blood owns so hard. i bounced off it at first due to the cultists but then did the standard made to order stuff everyone recommended and fell in love with it. the tnt is one of the most satisfying fps weapons of all time.

after beating it like that i swapped to just well done and went through it again, more able to deal with the cultists now that i understand the game, and it owned in a different but no less fun way.

blood is a great game. too bad about the sequel.

No no... THAT other sequel they released that would need the KEX treatment (and oh boy a lot of fixing) to make it even playable. Serious post, I'd love Blood 2 to get actually fixed and balanced properly. It had some cool ideas and weapons :(

Also the genre was much younger so how to do it well was less understood and there were fewer people who built up significant experience with it

Both! It is in a finished, fully playable, highly polished state, but a bigger and better version is in the works (and probably quite a ways off, so I wouldn't wait around)

It’s very satisfying to ear a ton of cultist screams from a perfectly angled dynamite throw.
