I stopped listening to Adam and Drew too. The new loveline is (well, I haven't heard an episode in about two months) listenable but not that entertaining.

Do they take callers? The few I listened to did not, it was mediocre, but usually just Adam and Drew droning on and on and on, middle-age style.

Listening to the classic podcasts, did Adam and Drew used to shill so much crap during commercials back in the day?
I do enjoy how much more they tried to intervene by phoning the callers bf/gf.

Even more than this I love when Adam tried to simulate the "girl" in a conversation to give a guy some practice in asking her out.

They do now, but it's nowhere near as fun as the old days since the callers are all fans and not regular listeners.

I doubt they used to do ads in the old days as the show was syndicated and the radio station playing the feed would get the right to insert their own local ads over the PSA reel they've mentioned before.

Advertising products like that is how most podcasts make money. Audible seems to pop up a lot on podcasts I listen to. I can't really fault them for trying to turn a profit, although I die a little inside every time I hear Drew advertising some brain game thing in exactly the words that aren't a medical guarantee.

They do take calls but the problem is (and someone in this thread said this way before me) idiot teenagers and young adults used to think of the show as a public service of some sort, and you'd just get the strangest/dumbest people calling in. Now it's mainly old fans of the show with less interesting topics talking to two jaded old guys. And I don't know if they stopped or not but the half hour long 'current news story' thing they do is terrible. Right now I'm deep into a couple history podcasts and I may try A&D show again after they're done but unless they improved drastically they just aren't that entertaining.

Good point, that is the weakness of podcasting vs radio. The x-factor of talk radio are the unhinged/entertaining people who randomly heard the program and called. Everyone on a podcast subscribes and already has shades of fanboyism. The hosts are insulated and in an echo chamber of agreement. Add this to an already lazy smug Adam, without the correcting influence of an Ann.

I know Drew's credibility has been in question for years, but I also still cringe when he pimps something like those scientifically unverified "neuroplasticity" games.

I can't wait for the later 96 early 97 when Drew starts appearing more in mainstream media. And after each TV appearance talking on the show about how conflicted he is about compromising medical advice with commercial interests and entertainment. I believe Adam predicted that Drew's wife will want a bigger house.

She was a model younger in life, and a travel agent later. I wonder if her travel agency job was just one of those "rich wife" things. My wealthy physician uncle lets my aunt run a small business to the ground every few years.

Heh, I think they lost Luminosity as a sponsor or Drew just forgot but in the latest episode he shits on those mind game things a bit and tells people to just download free lecture series off iTunes U.

That scam legalzoom or Adam doing stand-up at a casino.
But even Howard Stern in his heyday had to push all sorts of weird crap. I remember him even doing locals ads for pizzerias. Granted, Stern is not relying on his integrity.

In these early 96 shows, Adam really enjoys trying to get callers parents or boyfriend/girlfriend on the line in order to try to solve their problems. He tries like twice a show, but I guess it's usually disappointing since he hates doing that even just a few years later.

Adam doing anything live is just not funny at all to me, its kind of cringe worthy. I remember a year or so ago Adam and Drew were doing a live podcast tour and I was considering going just to see them in person, but I just couldn't even imagine sitting through it. I may sound like an old poo poo but nothing can recapture the magic like they had in the good old days. :corsair:

One thing I've learned repeatedly throughout my life is you can never attempt to re-create first time magic and chemistry.

Whether it be Adam and Drew banter, an old relationship, a return vacation with the same friends, a band reunion album, movie sequels, TV shows brought back by fandom, the Simpsons past 2001, your college sports team full of returning seniors, a new location of your favorite restaurant...most of the time you'll be let you down by your expectations.

I listened to an episode recently where a guest asked Adam why he doesn't do stand up, and he said that he hates the idea of getting up and doing the same routine for people every night, and that he prefers spontaneity.

Plus it's always helpful to get a recap of the show that I'm about to listen to.. really clears up any questions or surprises I might have gotten from the episode.
