Looking at the album credits credits and an interview Dre gave to Rolling Stone, it looks like King Mez and Justus basically ghost wrote the album for Dre (and probably Kendrick one would imagine). Its interesting to me how Dre has basically owned the fact he has always used ghostwriters and no one gives a poo poo (as they shouldn't) and meanwhile you have the drama about the Drake stuff and all that.

It feels like most of the Drake controversy is just coming from traditionalists that never liked Drake and are using the ghostwriter thing as proof that Drake isn't a "real" rapper. Drake is a lightning rod for this poo poo because he's the prime example of how the culture/values of hip-hop have changed from the 90's, and he the most successful rapper in the game to boot. The inverse is also why J Cole gets so much acclaim and popularity in contrast with his really mediocre music; he's the last majorly successful young rapper making safe, dusty hip-hop for oldheads, so a lot of people flock to him by default.

To the sun's savage brightness he exposed the dark and secret surface of his retinas, so that by burning the memory of vengeance might be preserved, and never perish.
It's also cause Drake has a reputation for a heart on sleeve lyricist, so it was a shock to some people that Mr Confessional wasn't writing his own raps.

Post some relatively unknown artist and/or producer and write a few words on them and post songs/best work, not in a gay music blog way. YouTube, mixtape links, bandcamp etc. Dog days of summer other than Dre now that the post-DS2 hype has faded and getting into a new artist is like the sweetest joy next to getting pussy.

TiME & Die Sellin

Found these guys from a Slim K (http://slimkslowdown.com) mix - probably best chopped and screwed producer alive.
Anyway. They have a mixtape, Newstalgia, I guess it came out last year and was also hosted by Slim K but doesn't seem like it made any noise at all

Kind of like upbeat, 90s inspired but leaned out stoner rapper. With some good/great production and nice rhymes. Great pride, guarantee you'll like them.

J-Zone is one of those guys who's forever been a part of that stuck-up AOTP-type fanbase where he's universally acknowledged as a great alternative to "ignorant" rap, but he's a really good and idiosyncratic rapper and producer who's been around since the late 90's. Most of his (earlier) music doesn't take itself that seriously, and almost all of his songs are concept driven (think Steal This Album-era The Coup). A little while ago he had a very acclaimed comeback album (The Peter Pan Syndrome) which doesn't do much for me, but's probably worth checking out if you like want something different.

Good stuff, thanks for the links.

Instant fan of Jazz Cartier. Maurading in Paradise is kind of all over the place stylistically. He really reminds me of YFN Lucci(who I'll post some more about below) on some songs, in a good way. Especially Dead or Alive. But yeah this really into this.

Noname Gypsy is...interesting. Don't know what to think about any of those songs but I think I love Mary Jane Love?

I must have posted about Lucci in here when I found this mixtape after finding him on some random Spinrilla compilation (can't recommend downloading that app enough, tons of official mix tapes and tons of poo poo random DJs or w/e throw together. I know it's available on iPhones and probably Androids if you just got let go from your job). But yeah he released his mixtape Wish Me Well in December I guess. He kind of reminds me of a better Lil Durk but way toned down, just kind of ride out New Atlanta music without anything really distinct like Migos, Thug, RHQ, Quan, Future have.

I seriously doubt anyone's saying Zone (or AOTP, for that matter) are an alternative to ignorant rap since all of those dudes by their own admission make really ignorant rap.

That aside, dude's always been one of my favs, and he's someone who I would've bet tons of money on "breaking out". Actually think had he got his start a bit later, it would've happened since he's got kinda an early-Kanye style vibe to his stuff (although with a different bent on the whole rap everyman thing). Problem I thought on Peter Pan Syndrome was he fell too much in love with his own drums, so his production lacked a lot of the offbeat sampling that made his earlier stuff good.

Also while he was retired he did some writing on rap stuff, and is one of the few dudes I'd actually recommend people reading (Bol and Noz are the others off the top of my head).

Budget Prefuse posted:

Never sure why he never took off more, should've hooked up with DJ Mustard at some point maybe because dude's been a serious rapper for awhile now. I'm not quite as high on his beat selection, but all his poo poo is really fun and bouncy. And you're dead on about him having some corny-rear end lyrics but never really seeming corny.

As for contributions, I'll try to throw in some newer and older

L'Orange is a dude who's really been putting out some interesting stuff recently. He had an album with Kool Keith this year that was ok, but his project "The Night Took Us In Like Family" with Jeremiah Jae is really good. Production is similar to Alchemist mixed with maybe Wax Tailor (if anyone's familiar with him). Really cinematic. There's kinda a vague gangsta movie concept going on here (similar to the western theme in Jeremiah Jae's Rawhide project) but it's real chill music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65Fo3N9YVWI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhraHoRyw8A

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrbRPPCbYNM

Insight hasn't put anything out in...awhile (or at least that I've seen) but he was always one of my fav underground dudes, and showed up on all sorts of different projects, including a mess of his own. He's a Philly dude, but kinda had the whole "conscious/backpacker" style that was really popular a few years ago. Most of his production was really heavily jazz influenced (both his own and when he worked with other producers), and he just has a real smooth, steady flow. He wasn't overly flashy super-scientifical lyrical miracle, just kinda straightforward, clever rhymes. It's not particularly in fashion now, but out of a lot of those dudes he's the one I still play a decent amount. He also made one of my fav rap songs of all time, which is...

those piano keys are just like whoa

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-dChwQh2xU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoSTIaN1vKk
That's off his Soloplexus project, where he's playing the role of 6 different MCs.

Mark Battles a dude I expect to see on that XXL freshman list in a year or two (especially since he's been around a few years). He's pretty much how I expect Vince Staples to sound in a couple of years or so. Dude can rap his rear end off, not much more to say than that. Think someone here may have mentioned him not too long ago as well, but he's def got the rapping skills, and enough charisma that I could see him getting some buzz.
