There have been some weird quality issues and incomplete episodes with the classic Loveline podcast lately. I mean that's understandable that they don't have good quality masters of everything given the show is almost 20 years old, but should they really be dropping ads into an incomplete show that sounds like it was recorded from someone's radio?

And this whole PODCAST ONE thing in general seems like they're trying to recreate some of the stuff that's made radio so terrible. Awful ads for horrible products, and ads for premieres of TV shows, do they understand how podcasts work? People will listen to them weeks or months later in a lot of cases.

The reason I never listened to Giovanni's "Loveline Tapes," is because of his dumb commentary, horrible taste in music, and general fuckery. This latest episode of CL is exactly that and it was horrible.

And naturally, the Heather Graham episode cut out on a really comedy-laden call with a son wanting to burn his dad with his porn watching.

So yeah the latest Classic Loveline is an early Clive Barker show, but it's about an hour long and one section has the station ID from the radio it was recorded from. They can drop in ads but not even bother to clean up that stuff? Are they just getting these from old fan recordings? If so that's kinda sleazy if they're monetizing it.

Also I'm really starting to wonder how much audio engineering is going into these. Not from the latest episode, but it's also a recent one with audio issues.

Just look at that loving waveform. It hurts my ears just seeing that. The beginning part is the hosts speaking in a normal voice, then the bumper music (which is pretty loud), then the spikes blowing out the levels are one of the ads they jammed in. They don't even seem to be doing basic leveling on most of this poo poo. I don't know much of anything about audio but I was able to fix it in 5 minutes with Audacity.

It was all so much better before he got involved. Probably not a coincidence. Wasn't the original plan just to release the ones they had the old masters of?

FCKGW
May 21, 2006

AFAIK Westwood One has very little of the original masters left. The only copies of Loveline floating around are fan-made tapes (which Giovanni has) or some random copies that Anderson has for some reason.

I think the Classic Loveline podcast was Giovanni convincing Westwood One to do a podcast using his material and then they can put their ads on it. Westwood One would get marginal copies of content they have claim to but no longer posses for free and get to put ads on them as a revenue stream. In exchange for this Giovanni gets to put his enormous head up the listener's rear end and do commentary.

Don't forget to listen to Gio's other exciting podcasts like the one where he talks for 4 hours about himself, a podcast where he talks over other podcasts, and one that's entirely devoted to old episodes of MacGyver.

Ah gotcha. I was never sure of the situation, because when they first came out it sounded like he wasn't involved at all; there was no commentary, the names and summaries were way different and I seem to remember there were different things put online from Giovanni where he was talking about the show that made it sound like he didn't have anything to do with it. I just assumed he inveigled his way into the process after it launched.

And the audio quality on the early ones is super clean, for example January 2 and 3 of 1996 sounds like it has to be an original master.

You can tell the original master episodes because they have the station ID spots with a blank space.

I think it's good that the shows continue to be put out but anyone that taped and collected these episodes and sent them into Giovanni over the years must be thrilled that podcast/Westwood one are using their effort for some sweet podcast commercial income with Giovanni sucking up all the credit.

Hey, if you want to hear a great interview with Drew where there isn't even a trace of shittiness, http://www.nerdist.com/pepisode/nerdist-podcast-dr-drew/ was really fuckin' great. Turns out Drew went through having prostate cancer recently, which sucks.

What the hell is even the point of mashing together a few low quality "lost episodes" where all of each that remains is ~20 minutes and making that a "Classic Loveline" podcast. I could listen to them separately without ads or commentary, thanks to the community.

I listened to 2004-8-23 today, and near the end there is a caller who starts imitating all of Adam's rants as soon as they put him on the air.
He is so good at it, and Adam and Drew are dying listening to him hit every one of Adam's jags perfectly.

I was laughing so hard at work listening to it.

Its interesting how often 1996 Adam asked to directly interact with whoever the caller is calling about(significant other, parent or friend).

In two short years he would be tired and disappointed by interfacing with the 3rd party, and it would rarely happen. Its actually works pretty well when the other person does get on the phone.

I love when he would talk to the parents, like when a son or daughter was trying to be covert about calling in to Loveline and their Mom would pick up the phone. He was really good at it, the parents would usually end up being receptive. You'd think Drew would have been the one for that.

Its the best whenever Adam got someone's allegedly grumpy mom to laugh or sass/flirt or talk about their own past.
I think he gave up on 3rd party calls because for every good conversation there were 10 that hung up during the break. He asks like 2 or 3 times per show in these early episodes.

I'm on the run of episodes when a magazine described Adam as "Dr. Drew's sidekick and aspiring standup comedian"

I'm in the period now where Drew is all about "ANN GET THIS GUYS NUMBER, WE NEED A CALL BACK", which I think was an attempt to tap into that same vein of genuine concern
Of course, after several weeks they have had one they managed to get back, and it was from a girl who had called about her uncle trying to get her into a tiny bikini in a hot tub, but in the call back she was insistent that he was a wonderful guy and that he did nothing wrong, frustrating everyone

Another thing, even though I'm sure it's impossible, I would love to read a full breakdown about DrDrew.com. In hindsight it was typical DotCom bullshit, but Drew was clearly so in love with it and really thought the chatrooms were going to save America. I want to read about how, when, and why they pulled the plug on the "Random Boy And Girl Road Trip Across America"

My favorite moment was Drew triumphantly reporting that he was going to do a webcast with Mike Tyson, Adam repeatedly saying he was going to cancel, Drew saying it was a done deal... and then Drew coming in "furious" the next night because Mike was a no show~~~

I loving love commas

2001- 05-17: Howie Mandel is filing in for Adam, and he mentions overhearing the phone screener telling a caller "sorry, no blowjob calls in the first hour."

I never really thought of it before, but I wonder what other kind of rules/guidelines about content they had.

Boy, I think it's about time I tell you the difference between a man and a woman. A woman isn't a woman unless she's pretty. And a man isn't a man unless he's ugly.

I'm surprised Giovanni hasn't had these taken down yet, only for them to reappear with a 30 minute intro by him.

Is there a current updated megapack of Adam Carolla era Lovelines floating around? I have about 70 gigs currently, but pre 2001 is sparse. I'm out of the loop, did Giovanni actually get old archive tapes? From what I understand he does a podcast where he makes it all about himself and rambles for 30 minutes before the episodes, quite possibly even interstitially? That's a bummer if true... does anybody ever do their own Giovanni-less edits of these shows?

Can't help you there except on the bit about "archive tapes".

In the beginning the claimed that he did, and it might have been true, as he was releasing high quality full episodes in order for a while.

That ended though and recently there have been quite a few episodes that have low quality audio and/or cut off abruptly, and they are not released in order or without gaps either.

I think adam had him on the podcast a year or two ago. He was just a young musician looking for work, somehow got hired to score Taboo 2, and his career never really took off so he quit music.

It wasn't that good of an interview, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

The singer was a woman, and I can't remember if they ever got in contact with her.

I've got two of the Adam Carolla show podcasts, one from the guy who wrote the song, and the other from the guitarist (whose mom did some of the backing vocals  ). The guitarist one is pretty good, Dana Gould is on for that one. I can toss them on Youtube if there's any interest.
