Singing Joy To The World by The Fruit Bats
Black Bells (Make Me Okay) by The Fruit Bats

The album Songs of Love and Hate by Leonard Cohen and the album Songs of Leonard Cohen

Cat Stevens

Pretty much everything I've heard from Lucinda Williams (country)

Of course, early Bob Dylan (1962-1967 all have a high ratio of sad songs)

You forgot one of John Prine's most depressing tracks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oliKRRw6ACk

Arguably about a boy born in an incestuous affair who later finds out via a diary written by his mother/sister.

quote:

The whole town saw Jimmy on the six o'clock news /
His brains were on the sidewalk and blood was on his shoes

:suicide:

Lamchop also did a good cover of the song.

Oh drat, good call. That song is depressing as gently caress. John Prine's a master, able to write the most heart-wrenching bleak songs, and then some clever funny songs, and sometimes blending them together.

I never thought that song was about incest, but it fits.

edit: I always thought the diary was him realizing that he could have many possible fathers, or no mention of a person who could be his fathers, bad things his mom's done, etc.

The incest interpretation came from here apparently from the liner notes to the Great Days anthology. I used to have that anthology but the booklet would have been lost years ago so I can't reference it directly.

Prine's story about the song:

John Prine posted:

As a child, a neighborhood kid who was always in trouble chose me for a friend. His brothers pushed him around a lot, and his mother generally ignored
him. Years later as a teenager, still always in trouble, he ended up in Juvenile Court and the prosecutor decided to tell the court and my friend, that
his father was his father, but his mother was his oldest sister. No wonder he was always in trouble

I also figured he could have many fathers. The line about changing diapers and polishing chrome suggests his mother may have been a prostitute.

Townes Van Zandt's whole catalog is great/sad, but this song takes the cake. Supposedly Keith Richards and Mick stole it from him? I dunno. Either way Townes' version is definitive.

Townes Van Zandt would fit the bill. You already mentioned Dylan and Leonard Cohen, who are my two favorite song writers. I'd place them in that lineup, along with Kris Kristofferson. Like you said about Prine, he can go from really funny to sad depths real quick and he's great at it. Bob Dylan had some of that in his writing too.

If you're not familiar with Bruce Springsteen's two depressing folk albums, do yourself a favor and listen. The person asking about depressing songs might also like both of these albums, in particular Nebraska, which is about as bleak as it can get.

Yeah, I didn't mention Townes Van Zandt earlier since he's pretty much nothing but depressing folk songs, I assumed the OP knew him already. I actually haven't listened to a lot of Kristofferson. What are the must-have albums?

And I've been going through Springsteen all year.

Any recommendations for more stuff like "Treason" by Naked Raygun? The rest of the album that it's on isn't really as anthemic.

The talky bits kind remind me of Slint's Tweez, which I like more than Spiderland (unpopular opinion!). Reminds me of "For Want Of" by Rites of Spring, too.

We need more women in STEM, and by that, I mean skateboarding, television, esports, and magic.
Looking for two very different kinds of song recommendations:

1.) After hearing it in the new season of Twin Peaks, I'm in love with "Shadow" by Chromatics. It sounds like modern The Cure with a female singer. Any similar song recommendations I could pull together into a late night playlist?

2.) I have a hard-to-explain affinity for wistful songs about locations. John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" would be an example. Simon & Garfunkel's "America" would be another. I'm sure there are a ton of these. I'd like to make a driving playlist of these.
