Instead of being produced for profit, this shot could ultimately be manufactured around the world and made cheaply available to all without governmental or private legal retribution. quote:This vaccine can be stored in a normal refrigerator and is easy to produce with affordable standard equipment that is already available almost everywhere because low-income countries have been using this same equipment to create hepatitis B vaccines. As a result, production cost will also be low: about $1.5 - $2 per dose.

Reminds me of the quote from back in the 50s when Jonas Salk and his team developed the polio vaccine he said patenting it would be "like patenting the sun". At least there's still a couple of good people like that out there in the world I guess.

The problem is absolutely not lack of good people that invents things like that, it's that it takes a lot of money/resources to get through all necessary regulations and see to that it reaches the end users. Thus, in the vast amount of cases, the inventors have to either monetize it or leave it because there exists no non-commercial standard paths for making your drug approved and available to the end users.

This huge piece of poo poo fascist just died of Covid. 🥳 one of the "thinkers" of Bolsonaro's wing of insanity. https://www.cnnbrasil.com.br/politica/internado-nos-estados-unidos-olavo-de-carvalho-morre-aos-74-anos/ quote:Carvalho claims that global warming is a hoax produced by a global conspiracy. Also, lol quote:He also said that there are no proofs of heliocentrism[58] and that geocentrism was as valid as heliocentrism "since you can use different points of reference."[59] In 2018, on Facebook, he stated that he had no "definitive answer" to many "questions", such as whether the Earth is spherical or flat.[60]

mycomancy posted:As an aside, I want to point out how dead this thread is nowadays vs. the numerous doom threads. Eh, it's a function of how the human brain works. The brain notices bad things much more easily than good things, because when the brain developed, bad things can pose a threat to the brain's existence. So it takes a lot less bad news to register as noteworthy to the brain than it does good news to come across as memorably good. There's knock-on effects of this in the media, as a result. Bad news gets more attention, so capitalistically there's incentive to report bad news over good because it'll get eyeballs on screens and pages, but even beyond that, the media wants to report bad news because it's important for people to know about possible threats or problems. Everyday good news is less likely to have wider-scale impact and thus to need such broad reporting -- food prices rising is something the media wants its audience to know about so it can prepare for that and make decisions based on the information, whereas food prices dropping doesn't need to be prepared for since it improves situations rather than restricting them, so it's likely to be reported less prominently. Thus it's important to make sure you're calling out good news when it happens, even if it's local or relatively minor!
