quote:

Dubbed "the World's Covid vaccine," the inoculation—formally called Cobervax—is an open-source alternative to Big Pharma's patent-protected vaccines. Instead of being produced for profit, this shot could ultimately be manufactured around the world and made cheaply available to all without governmental or private legal retribution.

Common Dreams reported this week that Cobervax—developed jointly by Texas Children's Hospital, Houston's Baylor College, and the Indian pharmaceutical company Biological E. Limited—was authorized for emergency use in India amid a surge in infections driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant. Texas Children's Hospital says the new vaccine is at least 90% effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and 80% or more effective against its Delta variant.

"We're not trying to make money," Peter Hotez, who led the Texas Children's Hospital team, told The Washington Post. "We just want to see people get vaccinated."

quote:

This vaccine can be stored in a normal refrigerator and is easy to produce with affordable standard equipment that is already available almost everywhere because low-income countries have been using this same equipment to create hepatitis B vaccines. As a result, production cost will also be low: about $1.5 - $2 per dose.

Other cool things:

They deliberately made the vaccine vegan and halal to make sure more people are willing to take it.

These researchers aren’t just doing this because they’re ‘too late to cash in’. They have a track record of releasing patent-less vaccines and for the last two decades have focused on creating vaccines that are considered ‘not profitable enough’, like vaccines for parasites that primarily occur in low-income regions.

Reminds me of the quote from back in the 50s when Jonas Salk and his team developed the polio vaccine he said patenting it would be "like patenting the sun".
At least there's still a couple of good people like that out there in the world I guess.

The problem is absolutely not lack of good people that invents things like that, it's that it takes a lot of money/resources to get through all necessary regulations and see to that it reaches the end users. Thus, in the vast amount of cases, the inventors have to either monetize it or leave it because there exists no non-commercial standard paths for making your drug approved and available to the end users.

....
In a 2016 Twitter post, Carvalho stated, citing Dr. Carlos Armando de Moura Ribeiro, that "vaccines either kill you or drive you crazy. Never vaccinate your children."[64]
He has also falsely declared that AIDS does not pose a risk to heterosexuals, basing his arguments on journalist Michael Fumento's book The Myth of Heterosexual Aids.[65][63]
On 22 March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, he stated during a livestream in YouTube that there was no confirmed case of death from the virus in the world and that the pandemic would be "an invention" and "the most extensive manipulation of public opinion that has ever happened in human history".[66][67] At that date, according to the World Health Organization, there were more than 294,000 cases of the disease and 12,784 deaths from it.[68]
Sounds like poetic justice to me.

Also, lol

He also said that there are no proofs of heliocentrism[58] and that geocentrism was as valid as heliocentrism "since you can use different points of reference."[59] In 2018, on Facebook, he stated that he had no "definitive answer" to many "questions", such as whether the Earth is spherical or flat.[60]

...
Carvalho advocates a revisionist view of the Inquisition, claiming it is a myth spread by Protestants.[75][76]

Eh, it's a function of how the human brain works. The brain notices bad things much more easily than good things, because when the brain developed, bad things can pose a threat to the brain's existence. So it takes a lot less bad news to register as noteworthy to the brain than it does good news to come across as memorably good.

There's knock-on effects of this in the media, as a result. Bad news gets more attention, so capitalistically there's incentive to report bad news over good because it'll get eyeballs on screens and pages, but even beyond that, the media wants to report bad news because it's important for people to know about possible threats or problems. Everyday good news is less likely to have wider-scale impact and thus to need such broad reporting -- food prices rising is something the media wants its audience to know about so it can prepare for that and make decisions based on the information, whereas food prices dropping doesn't need to be prepared for since it improves situations rather than restricting them, so it's likely to be reported less prominently.

Thus it's important to make sure you're calling out good news when it happens, even if it's local or relatively minor!
