My favorite thing about this thread is always people taking Visidan's posts at face value.

Some dude whispered me the other day to tell me I sucked, but he could carry me for 10g a pip if I wanted to climb anyway. Then I got someone from PZ to carry me a few games for free, and that's the story of how I finally escaped the last tier of sapphire.

I haven't really played MMOs, but my friends who play this game tried to get me into it now that it's free to play, saying that it's not really like most MMOs because it's less grindy and has better story and some other stuff. Anyhow, I gave it a shot. Here is my experience as a prospective player. I made a goblin because it seemed like the race most likely to let me wear actual clothes. I chose mesmer as my class, but the intro story seemed to think I chose engineer. My first quest was "stop the rampaging golems," so I went around killing some golems, but they seemed to just respawn forever. Eventually I noticed that while my quest was "Stop the golems", the fine print next step of quest said "Talk to Ralph", so I talked to Ralph. He told me to talk to Wizenmajig Goblanflagert. She told me to go over there and kill the big golem. I went over there and saw a big golem with some goblins attacking its base. I walked toward it to attack, and... it collapsed before I got close enough to land a single hit. I was congratulated on my fine work resolving this crisis. At this point I was told that I needed to be level 10 to progress the story further. It seemed a bit early to be telling me "Okay go grind", but fine, I went and did some hearts. One asked me to wake up some golems by navigating their treacherous dialogue trees (which were all identical and were pure technobabble and every option was obviously correct), then run in circles until the golems fell asleep again so I could re-awaken them. Another told me to beat up the bad guys saying bad things to the students, but you couldn't just attack the bad guys, you needed to talk to them first to say "I'm going to beat you up now" before their names turned from green to red so you could attack them. Another was some sort of "kill this many bad guys as a group" event thing. Every inquisitor that spawned was immediately deleted by players 5v1ing it, but it still took forever to clear the event because they spawned so slowly and required so many kills. I'm guessing they scale up the number of kills needed to clear the event to match the number of players present, but not the spawn rate of the enemies? Throughout all of this I'm not sure if any enemies ever actually dealt me any damage. At this point I was level 5 or 6 and already getting bored of the mindless grinding. The starting city seemed pretty awful - invisible glass walls everywhere for no reason, and the goblin "krewe" (gently caress you) are just insufferable. My friends said it would be better if I left the city, but this proved impossible. Leaving the city at all requires level 10, and fast-travel through WvW requires level 60 (!?). So instead they lead me to a jumping puzzle, which sounded like a nice change of pace. I grew up with N64 platformers, I loved Super Meat Boy, a jumping puzzle should be right up my alley. I fell a bunch of times just trying to get to the jumping puzzle. Jumping feels really clunky. All the jumps are "jump from the very edge of this platform and you might just barely jump far enough to reach the next", but the platforms are rounded at the edges so it's not always clear where the edge is. The jumping puzzle itself was even worse. The first jump is invisible with the default camera angle until you fall into it, since it just looks like a drop in terrain and your view of the gap is blocked by the platform you're already standing on. You need to go off on a side path to get "attuned", and I'm not sure how you're meant to figure that out, since the game won't mention it until you finish the main path and are booted back to start for not being attuned, and the path to becoming attuned is hidden, requiring you to drop straight down off to the side in a specific place. But whatever, I got the attunement, and at least the game is nice enough to not un-attune you when you fall. Next are the wind bridges. The first has a gust of wind blowing straight toward you at the end which doesn't stay deactivated long enough to get past it. The solution seems to be to run headfirst into it several times, being knocked backward and making only incremental progress each time, until you finally make it. The next requires you to run as fast as possible at the right time, but has a millimeter-high elevation increase at the end that you need to jump for, since it's treated as a wall otherwise and will cause you to fall to your death if you don't realize that. Then there's... a bat ten levels higher that killed me in two hits. Okay, I was probably underleveled for the area, but what's this one random monster doing in a jumping puzzle? Fortunately, someone revived me, so I was able to make it to the portal and... get warped back to start for not being attuned. Apparently even though falling doesn't wipe your attunement, being killed by a bat does, and the game makes no mention of this. So I tried again, missed a jump, fell, and died. Normally falling just resets you to the start of the jumping puzzle, but this time it actually killed me. Not sure if that's a glitch, but either way I decided it wasn't worth coming back. My friends tell me GW2 isn't really that bad and I should give it another chance, but there's no chance I'm going to. The free game should be designed to draw new players in so that they want to spend money on the full game. But here the free game puts the weakest part of the game forward first, requiring players to do a few hours of grinding bear-asses sidequests before they are granted the privilege of unlocking chapter 1 of the story. This is a terrible idea for a game that bills itself as not being about mindless grinding like other MMOs. I'm not sure who it's meant to attract, except for people who spent so much time on WoW that the mindless grinding feels nostalgic. The infinite grind is the part of the MMO you hide in the distance for when players are already hooked, not the first thing you put forward. From what I've seen, GW2 is not very good and I would neither play nor recommend it. Also the jumping puzzles are loving awful.
