anyone know of a mod that lets me place permanent guards? i don’t like seeing npc’s living in the boonies getting killed by wolves and poo poo. i want them to be safe. i want to put up protective tesla coils around their homesteads but i’ll settle for dudes with swords

or poo poo maybe i should make the mod on my own, but i’m weak willed and inexperienced so i don’t even know where to begin

I ran out of poo poo to do in vanilla so I started incrementally installing the current list of mods. I thing I just finished the first part with a helping of Helgen Reborn. It was pretty funny because I kept loading back into some cave somewhere, and I'd come out to a new world like Dorothy first popping out in Oz.

How do some of the other quest mods and overhauls compare to Helgen Reborn? I saw some recommendations for it and found it to be ... somehow both linear and unfocused.

Also, I am pretty surprised with vanilla restoration magic as well as what magic mods try to do with it. I have been trying to top off the other skill trees and was surprised that the turn undead spells just kind of make them run away a little... if they don't just resist it. Meanwhile, I can slap a draugr on the rear end with the flat side of dawnbreaker and they spontaneously combust. I would have figured the turn undead spells would have had a lot more pop to them.

Final thing: what is the mod ecosystem like for spear combat? I want to do spear with shield but it doesn't seem to be mature thing.

Spears in Skyrim are still kinda rough, but have gotten markedly better over the last year or so's worth of mod development.

The go-to mod at the moment is Animated Armory, which gives you spears AND new animations, and a bunch of other new weapon types like halberds, pikes, whips, quaterstaves, rapiers, and claws too. The other option is True Spear Combat, which gives you javelins, but is also wildly redundant if you try to pair it with Animated Armory. Also AA's animations are a LOT better than TSC's.

There's also Spears Skill and Perks Tree, which adds a skill and perk line for spears. It was designed to function in tandem with True Spear Combat, but it has install options for Animated Armory, or a combination of TSC and AA if you're a true madman and want to have all the weapons ever.

Yeah I'm shocked.

The mod itself mostly just gave kids their own hairstyles, and added a bunch of outfits for them, so they didn't all look the same.

Did a few kinda dumb things like add kids to bandit camps you could adopt (including skeleton children in the occasional crypt), and added a bunch of basic armours they could use so you could take them as followers. It didn't change body types or anything, so it itself was more or less fine.

Spears will only be good once Skywind comes out. They added solid spear support but it was a huge pain in the rear end. Apparently one person worked for a few years to reverse engineer bethesda's toolset for adding 1st person animations and skeleton rigging and allowed the Skywind team to use it.

You can accomplish this by installing the wizards tower mod I tried one time that put a tower close to Winterhold that I could see from loving Riverwood.

Edit: It's Caranthir Tower.

The best player home remains (my SE port of) Fyr Manor.

I don't really have much/any experience with modding or PC gaming in general tbh, but I picked up Skyrim VR and have been having fun fumbling through mods via mod Nexus/Vortex. So far everything has worked pretty well, with a few exceptions and for the most part I have been able to get everything working with one huge exception and I was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction towards figuring it out. Basically any mod involving followers that I add makes it so the game won't even boot up. It just crashes immediately. This includes any follower tweaking mods, reskinning, player made followers etc. absolutely none of them work. Vortex doesn't give me any sort of warning or anything so it looks like they are good to go and then it just breaks the game. Any ideas on what to look into to see what might be causing this? I tried to see if it might be an issue with the VR version but it seems like people online are using them just fine...Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, are 2020 textures and the improved mesh mods not compatible or something? I cannot get them to run at at the same time.

A crash before you hit the main menu generally indicates a missing master file. Go check the mods' requirements.

I recommend trying Wabbajack and using a modpack if you want to delve further into Skyrim modding. It's easy as hell and will also set you up with Mod Organiser 2 which makes vortex look like malware

I maintain to this day that Vortex is malware. :v: Or at least adware for Nexus first, a credible mod manager second.

Mod Organizer 2 is the best pick. It’s virtual install folder is a little confusing at first, and it’s a bit of a needy little pissant in that you have to run every mod-adjacent program through MO2 in order to get it to detect all your mods thanks to said virtual install folder. But holy poo poo is it great, very good for if you’re experimenting with new mods because it doesn’t actually overwrite anything, so you can easily plug in and rip out mods to see what works and what doesn’t.

I have Wabbajack downloaded but haven't used it yet because the packs are massive, and everyone says MO2 is harder to use than vortex and I already have no idea what I'm doing and constantly screwing things up so it sounds intimidating lol.

You literally just launch MO2, select SKSE, and hit run to start a Wabbajack list. Its incredibly simple and all you'll need to configure will be the MCM settings.

You can set the download folder to a different drive. It'll be a LOT slower (run it overnight) but you won't run into storage issues. And if you don't like something, try another one lol

Lexys LOTD is the most popular "super modded" one, Phoenix Flavour is halfway to vanilla and the most popular in that way, then there are a few vanilla+ and a few super whack ones.

The great thing is you can install them and delete them, and even have as many as you like at once and they'll stay separate
