Until you move over to some sort of semi-automatic/automatic/hi-cap/magazine-fed/etc. shotgun, the Remington 870 (or Mossberg 590) will likely remain a fixture of your loadout for a very long time. They're workhorse weapons that are pretty much always useful; never leave home without one.

I still kept my 870 even once I got a saiga, the 870 has more rounds and is more accurate, so it still performs better in a lot of situations. Not as good as a panic button but better if you aim your shots and aren't fighting anything you need more than eight shots to deal with.

The CS2-t I think is actually one of my favourite suits because it has very good carry capacity. There are slightly better options in the class, I found a duty variant of a similar suit which had the full 5 belt slots as an option and a bit more bulletproofing, but the CS one is still a great light travel suit for anything south of the monolith zones in red forest/pripyat.

It also has pretty good rad resist as I recall too, so definitely a good thing to have as an early suit.

These guys are usually very good, especially early on, for doing other missions with and the worst that can happen is they die and welp free loot. Until you can recruit your own companions you should generally be dragging them along if, for nothing else, to carry your loot.

lol, just had a funny encounter. Just aroun dawn I went into the Truck Cemetery to grab a couple stashes and do a few jobs I picked up. First one had me going over to what was apparently the Renegade's main camp? to kill someone. Wiped the place out, noticed a work bench that I didn't have permission to use, weird.

Start moving southwest through the cemetery to grab a stash and at one point I turned around and saw someone nearby, they shouted and... ran away? I attempted to follow find them, but couldn't in the maze of trucks. So I carefully resumed my trip to the stash, as I passed a group of Mi-24s though I happened to turn around again and there there person was and, again, they ran away. Around the helos is more open though so I could track them and since the ID came up Renegage, I put a burst of 9mm FMJ into them with my PP-19*. Got a message that I had just killed a mechanic and no longer needed permission to use their vice, whoops? Walk over to loot them and they had no weapons, just a file... so why was the idiot following me? Was he gonna try stabbing me with the file? :v:

* which I finally just got a couple more magazines for, so thats helpful.

[EDIT] Which game is Truck Cemetery from? I barely remember this place, it is surprisingly creepy in the early morning gloom and rain...
[edit 2] and right after I say this, I get jumped by a loving Chimera that nearly tears my left arm off... was really fun trying to kill it with my gun wobbling, my vision swimming, and all my blood pouring out....

Truck cemetary I believe is not in any of the games, it's a half finished asset from somewhere that was polished up and included when they glued everything together. Which is why it's massive and often not very populated in some versions of the game.

I swear, I can never tell when those moments where Stalker goes absolutely stone dead silent with nothing but the sound of my own footsteps in the mud are the game bugging out or doing a very, very good job of making me totally creeped out on edge at the dead quiet.

It went from gloomy and heavy rain to no rain and modest fog almost before I realized it and then went silent. I keep expecting the psy-storm alert/sounds to start but they haven't...

Yeah i love how ambient the sounds are from stalker--anything i hear just creeps me out be it traffic or the neighbors haha i'm like is this a new anomaly or enemy or is it just normal noise?? In AWH i heard this loving whispering that usually comes from being close to a controller but there was no mutants and it was very localized so i thought maybe an artifact?? I explored around didn't see anything unless it was like a karlik hiding in a bush and not moving but normally you get other pys effects this was just whispering. I love the wave of voices and noises that come from radar when you're in AWH, like you can tell the pys field is pulsing and your catching some of that pulse.

My earliest favorite stalker moment was wading through the marshes in Zaton at night during rain (I started the series with CoP). It’s one thing when vision is impaired but only being able to hear the sound of mud and a rainstorm when you know something is out there looking for you is peak immersion.

Series is such a treat.

Isn't the quick release supposed to drop your whole backpack? I guess if you're playing with magazines, those would be retained since your armor is technically carrying them with that addon.

Going from a sawed off starter + .45 secondary to this is just lol

It dropped with the silencer already installed, too.

E: I honestly can't tell if it was on purpose or just a quirk of NPC priorities but an emission happening during a firefight and the friendlies have a downed man calling for help making one of their members to try and come heal him before they both explode was atmospheric, to say the least.

Made some good progress today again.

Stashes have been kind. Pulled an ecologist science suit out of one and a Stalker Voyager Suit out of another, which is apparently one of the best overall medium-grade Loner armors you can get. Additionally I was able to fix up an AK-74M, though I ended up using it only few a couple hours tonight before I found a stash that had a 7.62 A/V barrel in fixable condition. I cleaned it up and immediately gutted the 74M for the parts to fix up an AKMS I've had sitting in my stash for ages. So now I've got a solid 7.62x39mm rifle. I also got the psy helmet from the eggheads, though I don't think I'll be venturing into the brain scorcher just yet...

Starting to feel pretty confident in my equipment for mid-game. Next goal is getting the next tier of night vision (tier 1 is kinda crap...) and maybe upgraded the Bear detector into a Grizzly and start doing some dedicated artefact hunting using the ecologist suit, which is surprisingly practical to just bring with me after installing an upgrade that cut its weight from over 6kg to about 1.5kg.

Unrelated, but I found a lady stalker that isn't Hip. Didn't realize those were a thing;

It seems like there's a very small (~5%) chance of a random NPC using the female data when it's spawned.

I've bumped into quite a few over time, but I'll never forget or forgive the one who "dimed" me out to a Monolith hit squad even though she was an ecologist and I was totally cool with them. Tatanya, you rear end, you absolute rear end.

In Gamma, are there any Loner bases with a trader besides Cordon? Kinda annoying to go down to Loris to buy some things (mostly a wide ammo selection) my good rep with the Loners gives me access to.

I guess I should raise my rep with the ecologists or something. Does the trader for them focus on NATO or WP stuff?

WP factions: Military, Loner, Duty, Bandits, Renegades, Monolith
NATO factions: Mercenaries, Clear Sky, Freedom, UNISG

Ecologist is a subset of the military although I'm not sure they even have an ammo trader? For loner I'd just make friends with Freedom as their base is pretty centralized, same as Duty.
And it's Goodwill for the traders so any missions for their faction works.

For loner traders there's a bunch scattered about that aren't necessarily part of loner bases.

I think Owl in skadovsk counts as loner, that's the big northern outpost of the faction. Otherwise yeah I think you need to go to Cordon.

There's also Forester but I don't know what he sells, I think it's mostly mechanics stuff.

If you want hollowpoints/mutant killing ammo you can buy then quite cheap off Butcher in the garbage, and the flea market over on the east side has a mix of odd inventories.

I think the ecologists in jupiter have a regular trader, their faction also allows you to buy the blueprints for top tier power supplies for the exoskeletons.

Is there a trick to progressing the Hip questline? I've delivered the required artefacts to Sidorovich in Cordon and he mentioned something about speaking with Barkeep next. Hip said she's got a job that required hunting a bloodsucker at night, so I'm guessing I need to speak with her at night to progress her story?

I've managed to finally upgrade from my AK74 'Beard' and oh my goodness I had no idea just how bad using a weapon with a broken barrel was. I went from needing at least a dozen AP rounds to drop an enemy to making their heads literally explode with a single shot. My problem is still a lack of Warsaw AP ammo supply, but an actually functioning weapon is making that a lot easier to manage.

Is there a reason I shouldn't use the KS-23 Short Barrel as my shotgun choice? The damage output looks impressive but I get the feeling the ammo for it isn't exactly common. I'm currently using the Remington 870 with C-More scope and have a Mossberg 590 available as well. The Mossberg feels like it handles slightly better.

I think I'm almost ready to make a push into Jupiter, then will try to get enough gear to handle shutting down the Miracle Machine.

With repairs, can most weapon parts be restored using just the file and oils, or do I need something else for cleaning up trigger mechanisms? The whole repair process seems convoluted, but I think it's just clicked for me. The problem I was having was I was trying to use the repair items on the weapon, but it looks like I just have to right-click on the weapon first, then select 'maintain parts' from a drop-down menu. I spent far too long trying to use the ramrod on the weapon to clean the dirty barrel and was wondering what I was doing wrong.

I'm a bit annoyed that the low-tier cooker has limited uses, as well as requiring fuel to use. It would be nice if there was something like a BBQ grill item that you could carry, but it could only be used with campfires or charcoal. The compromise could be that it's much heavier. I get why some items have a durability/limited number of uses, but I think that value should be a lot higher on certain items like the multi-tool or cleaning kits. I'd like an option of having a ramrod that just requires cloth and oil to use. Give it a rare chance of breaking to encourage people to collect a few, but they definitely shouldn't be crumbling to dust after just two uses.

Rynoto
Apr 27, 2009

For the ammo thing if you get lucky with stashes you'll get a kit that lets you craft ammo and WP ammo is particularly plentiful so mixing and matching disassembled parts will quickly let you build a stockpile.

Every weapon part can be repaired with tools as long as it's over 60% - ramrod, multitool, and file should get them all. Sidenote that green on the part list means 60%+. You'll need a vice to replace the barrel and a kit.

Both tiers of cookers can be crafted but yeah it's silly there isn't a buildable like the workshop that you can slap down for cooking that weighs 50lb or whatever.

tbh I've never enjoyed getting in the middle of Duty and Freedom's stupid squables, I usually try to avoid overly antagonizing either side and half the time it goes:

"Hey Dutyman, got any work?"
"Sure wanna kill some Freedom at this spot?"
"No, real work."
"I guess you could bring me a Controller hand."
"Cool, anything else?"
"Bring me some Freedom patches!"
No.

So far in my game Freedom have definitely been more bloodthirsty for Duty. Every available job has been either a request for Duty patches, a raid on a Duty encampment, or an assassination job. I went with Clear Sky and now they're at war with Freedom. I think it's just luck that I was able to get some positive personal reputation with Freedom before that happened. They're still happy to let me into their base even though I'm technically their enemy.

Right click -> Maintain Parts will use (precious) charges from the applicable kit, like handgun, historic, army, replacing the chosen part with a new 100% one. Likewise, right click -> clean parts uses charges from applicable cleaning kits to remove the dirty status from installed parts.

To use a file or ramrod to repair individual weapon parts you need to field strip the part out of the weapon, then it'll be a valid target for right clicking on the file -> use to repair it. Triggers specifically need the multitool to repair, rather than files or ramrods.

It's worthwhile to check the details pane for the multitool, file, etc and see what items you can use to contribute extra repair progress, this lets you use one charge of the file and one charge of some cleaning oils to fix something, rather than burning two or three uses of the file.

Then ideally you use a work bench to put the parts back into the weapon without making it dirty, apply oil as needed to get it's condition up, and you're golden.

I think this is because if you're outside of a zone, it doesn't actually specifically track the location of entities within that zone, it just simulates them moving between points of interest. You normally wouldn't see it because when you actually go into the zone it finds somewhere appropriate to drop them but since the mission is tracking them, it reveals a bit of a peek behind the curtain.

I've had it activated with an older version of Anomaly and never had issues with it bugging out. I think the only problem I had was a lack of manpower at some point so my faction was functionally destroyed and couldn't capture any more territory.

The missions I mentioned were just from the Freedom leader offering standard missions to grind reputation. For such a chilled out faction, they really want Duty dead.

This was very useful stuff. Thanks for the assist.

I've made my way to Jupiter but it's fairly quiet and empty so far. I did have my first encounters with UNISG and they do not mess around. I appreciated the sounds of AP rounds bouncing off of their armour to help let me know I might need better equipment.

I also came very close to having a Controller end my journey for me. That game effect is quite well done. This mod pack has been a lot of fun so far.

I've discovered that if you have the mod that lets you manage companion inventory activated, you can get a bit cheaty and take the weapons from temporary companions (safari hunters, scientists, etc) at any time, but ideally once their quest is done. The weapons they have are perfect condition so can be a very nice upgrade. Being able to access your personal deployed stash from anywhere on that particular map is also handy after a massive fight, but I've found it had issues if you've placed it near a landmark. You can't access it as a stash via PDA if any of the other map legends overlap the stash icon.

"A huge issue". I wonder what that means--does a buff mean a price increase? Without being able to jump in to the game right this minute, I recall the shrapnel rounds are currently fairly cheap (like 3k Ru) while the other rounds are like 9-10k Ru per box when purchased from a friendly vendor. Maybe the shrapnel rounds are supposed to be 6k or 8k Ru?
