If the guy in charge wasn't the designated Evil Overlord, he could have just gone 'Okay everyone who wants to have freedom can go live over there, that's a perfectly okay place to live, you'll have to look after yourselves and won't get our super special tech and if you decide to mess with us we'll fight back, but you'll be free and can have all the vices and rights to be an rear end in a top hat you want'. And of course, they miss that at the end, Stallone basically says "I don't want to tear this all down, I want to back away from this ridiculous extreme you've decided is best." It is literally watching someone hanging with a knife in their hand and they're just 'too lazy' to lift up their arm and cut the rope. It makes no sense, it shouldn't be happening, yet it does. United States was dominant, there was no giant threat on the horizon to many, it just seemed like it was time to coast for generations. To people, it was just a case of one of two flavors of gruel: who cared about the finer details? It was either a dumbass or a tightass. What real difference could one or the other make? You might as well curse out the people of Germany in the late 1800's for kicking Bismarck to the curb, or actually singularly blame Lowtax for creating the alt-right because he banned hentai. I've always been politically aware (I was that type of nerd watching the news and reading the newspaper every day as a kid), but, like said above, it was this bland, emotionless thing. My first vote for President was for Pappy Bush, and I had no qualms or doubts about it. I was voting for what I thought was best for America. The obviously farcical impeachment of Clinton was the first time I thought "This is not right", and that led right into the election of 2000, which was where I fully "woke up", as it was such an obvious, naked power grab. By a political dynasty. It sickened me and I became pretty much radicalized against the Republican party at that time, and it's only gotten more and more extreme every year, as they get more and more extreme, every year.
