I think people like this really do think we in 2024 live in a world that's not that much different from San Angeles, and of course they all want to be Stallone and tear it all down.

I mean, in some ways they're not WRONG. San Andreas is another 'this could never happen' (It's clearly a completely alternate world from ours, because our L.A was not a bombed out wreck in 1996, and I sure as hell can't see our society changing like it did in a mere generation, so it's obviously Fantasyland) nightmare, except it's a case where 'some people' (or worse, 'THOSE' people) decided that the best way to run a society was to remove absolutely everything that could stir the emotions in any way, a few valid points taken to a beyond impossible extreme. I sure as heck wouldn't want to live in San Andreas, but the whole point of the film was that Stallone and Snipes were not products of a world that slowly slid into it. Most people, it seemed, were fine with a vanilla pablum society. If the guy in charge wasn't the designated Evil Overlord, he could have just gone 'Okay everyone who wants to have freedom can go live over there, that's a perfectly okay place to live, you'll have to look after yourselves and won't get our super special tech and if you decide to mess with us we'll fight back, but you'll be free and can have all the vices and rights to be an rear end in a top hat you want'. And of course, they miss that at the end, Stallone basically says "I don't want to tear this all down, I want to back away from this ridiculous extreme you've decided is best." But why should we be surprised the usual sorts missed the finer details?

It's not 2016 that mainly prompts the despair, doomerism, and paranoia, I feel. It's 2020. It's Trump getting more votes than any sitting president in history (with a few asterisks attached, the same way that Avatar/Avengers Endgame were 'the highest grossing movie' in history), the one truth among his endless lies. It's four years of him, topped off with COVID, and he got 12 million more votes. It just utterly baffles every sense of, well, sense. He not only retained his whole voting bloc, he added millions more, or worse, added even more despite people leaving his voting bloc for one reason or another. It is literally watching someone hanging with a knife in their hand and they're just 'too lazy' to lift up their arm and cut the rope. It makes no sense, it shouldn't be happening, yet it does.

Again, to be fair...that was literally another world. Hell, it was several LAYERS of another worlds. That was before 9/11, the 2008 crash, the Obama backlash from the old angry white men that helped result in Trump, the pandemic that we had been said to be overdue for finally showing up...people then just did not have the right mindset to 'care', so to speak. It was the tail end of the 'end of history' period: Cold War was over, all the old empires were dead and gone (or were they?) United States was dominant, there was no giant threat on the horizon to many, it just seemed like it was time to coast for generations. To people, it was just a case of one of two flavors of gruel: who cared about the finer details? It was either a dumbass or a tightass. What real difference could one or the other make?

You might as well curse out the people of Germany in the late 1800's for kicking Bismarck to the curb, or actually singularly blame Lowtax for creating the alt-right because he banned hentai. People not only didn't know, they were not in any way equipped or 'designed' to know or understand.

The numbers were always there, but they didn't feel the need to vote because they were comfortable.

In 1996, the "absolutely incomprehensibly evil application of the Second Amendment" was "some crazy person walking into an elementary school and literally shooting the place up" and even the bath-salted Floridians feeding their own face to their dog didn't cross the line, and yet here we all are, post- "someone literally shot up an elementary school full of children" trying to find the next line of "absolutely incomprehensibly evil" but can't because there's really no way it gets worse from here.

I've always been politically aware (I was that type of nerd watching the news and reading the newspaper every day as a kid), but, like said above, it was this bland, emotionless thing. My first vote for President was for Pappy Bush, and I had no qualms or doubts about it. I was voting for what I thought was best for America.

The obviously farcical impeachment of Clinton was the first time I thought "This is not right", and that led right into the election of 2000, which was where I fully "woke up", as it was such an obvious, naked power grab. By a political dynasty. It sickened me and I became pretty much radicalized against the Republican party at that time, and it's only gotten more and more extreme every year, as they get more and more extreme, every year.

Also it's very much of a certain time and place where it was made right after the Rodney King riots so their idea of a "future" 1996 was a war-torn battleground like BTTF 2015, where no legitimate business survives and even the cops have to bungee-jump into hostage situations from Chinook helicopters.
