Don't die, thread. :(

I recently had an out of the blue thought about "From Hell," the 2001 Johnny Depp-lead Jack the Ripper movie based on the graphic novel and decided to check out the score for it and found it to be pretty decent. It's done by Trevor Jones and while it's not particularly remarkable it has some neat touches to it and overall serves as nice background with some gothic horror vibes.

I really like the opening of this track how it uses an (anachronistic for the film) gramophone sound:

As for Trevor Jones, we mustn't forget his theme for Cliffhanger:

RIP Sakamoto, I'm a sucker for his theme for The Sheltering Sky

There used to be a really great orchestral version around but I can't seem to find it now.

The podcast Art of the Score is back after an almost 3 year hiatus. Diving into Interstellar’s score in this latest episode. Good stuff.

Hell yeah, I really dig this podcast and was pretty bummed when they stopped recording. They inspired me to buy the full score of Back To The Future. I got the vibe that they weren't the biggest Hans Zimmer fans so I'm curious to hear what they think about Interstellar, which I actually love (score and film).

They seem to prefer Zimmers older works l guess as they have been doing live shows/concerts on him in Australia.

But they definitely love interstellar at least and all the layering.

Do you know what I just realized?

The first four notes of the Robocop theme are A C A B.

Was watching Aliens the other day and something in my brain clicked. Do you think that John Williams was invoking a bit of James Horner with this piece from Revenge of the Sith?

It's not a 1:1 but am I onto something here? It's not like Williams hasn't done it before. The maim theme from The Lost World takes liberal influences from Jarre's overture to Lawrence of Arabia.

The sequence in Star Wars where that track is used had an extended animatic version (with music and sound effects) included with the movie's blu ray release.

What's notable about it is that the sequence uses temp sound effects (because the previs was done before the movie was even filmed, so of course there wouldn't be any new sounds available yet), but the music is actually from the movie itself.

So it seems the music was added later to replace whatever temp tracks they were using during previs that Lucasfilm didn't own the rights to... which could very well have been from Aliens, with Williams keeping a similar vibe when it came time to score the sequence for real.

Keeping her memory alive!
oh hey I've never noticed this thread. here are some fabulous scores I've heard in the last ~month or so

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDv0rdCsZXY

Michael Nyman - Fish Beach - Man on Wire

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndasBUpI9WY

Jóhann Jóhannsson - Heptapod B - Arrival

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il2mxFFhtQk

Craig Safan/Tangerine Dream - Confrontation - Thief

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xstDHnfeK2o&t=1354s

Mark Isham - Silver Spoon (at 22:34) - Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

Hearing Jóhannson again kinda rubs in how badly we got cheated with Zimmer's tacky electric guitars and ululating in the new Dune soundtrack
