the xx is (was?) a really good recorded band and also an amazing live band which is pretty rare. their super intimate/tender sound translates well even to pretty large venues like the Aragon ballroom which holds 5,000 and is basically a giant echo chamber. the only other band I've seen there that sounded good was portishead

hello friend

one of these days i'm going to post a poppy megathread. i have all sorts of opinions about the transition from weirdo youtube video to bubblegum pop to some sort of metal that she's gone thru.
e: i have thoughts about the hair colour transition. she's no longer blond and dumb and pure poppy i guess? i mean going from blond to brunette is not a complicated metaphor.

more importantly, bunny is a rider.

This band "Pale Waves" sure sounds a whole lot like the Cranberries.

I like 'em a lot. I'm really out of touch with what's popular anymore so maybe this is the equivalent of somebody in the 90s saying "hey have you ever heard of Pearl Jam" but, well, there you have it.

I was quite surprised by this sound because of the Sub Pop logo visible before I clicked it. The only band I know off Sub Pop is clipping, and they sound very, very different.

lmao at the last several posts, people just naming bands making me youtube em myself. I did kind of start feeling Moaning after the second or third song I heard. Pale Waves was pretty awesome too, watching their videos the lead person got me :swoon: Pale Saints also presenting very chill vibes.

For something very unlike any of the bands mentioned previously in this post, this is Monarch. I have something of a musician crush on Emilie Bresson, the vocalist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkrmWQej1n0

This is a cover they did of a Runaways song, and while a lot slower and a lot weirder than the original, this is way faster than their original compositions. For example:

i have listened to television romance maybe ten thousand times. the whole first album, really. i don't know if they are popular either but i have recommended them to my friends described partially as "goth girls and the normies" based purely on music videos.

lmao that is how they come across in the videos. I don't think it comes across if you're just listening to the music. But when I was watching the video for Television Romance I was thinkin the front woman and drummer I get, but where did they find these loving dudes?

I dunno, man, I did that pretty intentionally. I thought people might enjoy finding stuff on their own terms as much as I do. Also, I'm generally not a fan of music videos, and I think most folks would agree that with this particular band the visual could come as quite a surprise after hearing the song.

holy gently caress okay so at first i was like "i've heard stuff li - oh wait a lady singing never-mind" and now i really like it.

this is completely something going on in my brain and is weird and with that preface for some reason, over the past i would say 3 years i have made a noticeable shift towards listening to mostly female vocalists. for some reason, maybe that i listened to mostly metal/extreme music for most of my life that has had angry dudes barking hate? i don't know. regardless lately for some reason i just prefer the sounds of a woman's voice to mens by a significant ratio.

Caroline Polachek: really interesting harmonic structure, I like it. The video was a huge turn-off for me :(

Sigrid: not bad, I'd listen to it again, adding this to a playlist. The video really bothered me.

SOPHIE: wow, this is cool. Reminds me of music school. Video is also compelling!

Devin Townsend: This seems like a cool song, messed up by bad mixing. I don't fault anybody: it's really difficult to mix a live show and have the output sound great. But the main thing I was thinking about during this tune was how incredibly skilled the audio engineer was who ran the Lawrence Welk show. That poo poo was impeccable.

Aurora: neat! That's a hell of a job mixing. I'd like to know how they pulled that off. I bet the video is a (very good) lip sync.

Sarah Shook: What is this, edgy Michelle Shocked? Oh, wow, Michelle Shocked went all milkshake duck while I wasn't looking. drat.

There's this annual uhhh content/festival in I think, in Nashville, called "Strange Arrange". These college-age (it looks like) musicians take hit songs and overlay them with crazy jazz/fusion voicing.

Nurdy Tunes - Starships

This style of music is called a "Live Arrangement" and doesn't seem to exist outside of YouTube. You can even watch entire Strange Arrange shows, but only on YouTube, as far as I can tell.
