So it's great that we have a translation patch for FMW 3, but is there a complete patch for the second game? I found one online, but half the text is missing, and going to the Spirits menu actually soft-locks the game.

I don't know if that'll cause anything to break, but either way you should definitely get rid whatever data4 you got from that download and keep the original one, since that's what's causing spirits to break.

I wish ZUN would do an "HD Remaster" of the older windows titles. Update the visuals for modern displays, add spell practice to each title, and then call it a day. Maybe do a bit more work on Scarlet Devil to bring it more up to modern standards. This will never actually happen, but I can dream.

Hmm, looks like the issue wasn't with the FMW English patches at all. I can't run any of the last three FMW games without it softlocking every time I touch the spirits page.

The main one is Makura, a baku who controls dreams (ie: literally Doremy, rip Sanbondo), and her minion is Meeko, the youkai of "counting sheep to fall asleep". Both were forgotten in the outside world and Meeko feels she owes a life-debt to Makura because she took care of her. Makura, for her part, used to be worshipped as a divine beast who took away bad dreams or gave people warnings in their dreams, but as people stopped believing in her she found she had no place to go. Eventually, both of them ended up in Gensokyo (not that long ago, shortly before the Vampire Incident) which moved Makura so much that she felt like it was paradise. A place where people still take their dreams seriously! She decided that she would do anything to protect this paradise, out of fear of losing it again. She helps Marisa find Remilia (using her ability to spy on people's dreams to see what they're up to) as part of this idea of protecting paradise, and says that she was honestly inspired by Marisa's heroism. Humans stopping youkai, as it should be. Anyway, eventually her own ideas of what it means to "protect" something begin to diverge from Marisa's, because she thinks that any change at all will make her paradise disappear. So she's against Kanako, the Lunarians, youkai-human friendships, etc. She gets sick of all the changes that accumulate over the course of the games and decides to do something about it with mind control: she steals the dreams of everyone in Gensokyo and instead shows them nightmares of everything going as badly as possible, which apparently brainwashes them into being xenophobic and distrusting. The characters figure all this out and invade the dream world to fight her, where she's theoretically omnipotent. During the course of the fight, she basically just talks to all the previous final bosses about their incidents and the whole thing is more like a conclusory statement on everything everyone's learned so far, rather than really being about her. You could say she's a dumb Kanako, with the implication that she's forgotten how to look forward (ie: "dream") in her zeal to preserve the present.

So besides Fantasy Maiden (which I've never gotten in to despite its popularity, mostly because it seems a bit hard for somebody like me to understand), have their been any cool fan games released in the past, ohhh....five or so years? I have Genso Rondo on the PS4 but it's kinda...

Touhou Puppet Dance Performance isn't actually a good game. Labyrinth of Touhou 2 might be? At the very least it's infinitely better designed than the first game, and IIRC the plus disk balanced out most of the broken poo poo in the vanilla game. Aside from that... well...

If you've got free time and the stomach for RPGs, Labyrinth of Touhou 2 will do you right. Also, whatever praise you've heard for the Fantasy Maiden Wars series I will redouble. It's fantastic, and the first one will ease you in to it real good. You will be able to understand most of the game even if you play it before any Super Robot Wars game (source: me, who did that and loved it)

You might possibly want more cash to max upgrade all of the cool new units who join in the fourth game (even though they all join at 50% upgrades anyways) so I guess she has a use??? FMW4 feels the most like a modern SRW game in that its character balance is completely busted, with clear developer favorites (the Buddhists are all sporting bootleg Lamda Drivers while the EoSD crew are lucky to even have a half decent spirit set). This isn't strictly a bad thing, as I feel like there's greater variety in possible playstyles and themed runs because of it, but if you're not really into SRW gameplay there is basically no point to picking like half the cast. Also, if you do decide to play FMW: pick Marisa Normal. Before FMW4 I would've recommended Hard since even though it makes FMW1 excruciating it really makes FMW2 (and to a certain extent FMW3) better, but FMW4's Hard is more Lunatic- than Normal+ and it's really really awful. And no, you don't miss out on anything at all by not taking Reimu's route. Well besides the secret Sakuya route in FMW1, but ahahahaha like you're going to be using anyone from that route not named Meiling by endgame.
