The funny thing is that tonight was far and away Ted's friendliest crowd out of all three debates - he sure as hell won't get a similar reception at UH or in San Antonio

It wasn't really a headline or sound bite moment but I did enjoy Beto's rebuttal to Cruz blathering about Hillary Clinton that it "Didn't have to do with anything".

https://twitter.com/HoarseWisperer/status/1043279088708931590 I only listened to some of it (was at dinner for the beginning), and didn't watch it, but from Twitter it sounds like Beto did pretty good at sounding like a grownup, and Cruz was, well, "true to form"?

i didnt watch it, but the response has been fairly pro beto so far. people say he didnt play hard like cruz, but that was probably a good idea.

I think the general consensus is that Beto was a little shaky and Cruz felt a little more natural, but Beto came off as more likable. Also, Cruz kept giggling and I'm honestly not sure why because he definitely wasn't doing THAT well.

I can't watch debates after Hillary dismantled Trump 3 times and lost. But then paradoxically, they make me super nervous because a candidate can totally meltdown in one. Did Beto hammer Cruz about Trump attacking his family? Because that, to me, is the biggest thing that will cut across all ideology. Like, what kind of loving wuss watches someone call their spouse ugly and say their dad killed JFK and then support that person? How can any Texan expect Cruz to fight for Texans if he won't fight for his family?

No he didn't, he was very classy saying that how Cruz defends his wife and family is Cruz's business then pivoted to Helsinki and Trump's Russian collusion and said that he did care how he defended the country against Trump.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Maybe? Look, the knife is already in at that point. Everyone knows it; Cruz is clearly a spineless coward whenever anyone brings this up. I'd give it a twist if I were Beto.

Jesus, Cruz just strings catch phrases, dog whistles and right wing trigger words together but never actually enunciates a position, policy or accomplishment. It's that Republicans actually buy that poo poo.

Skex posted:Jesus, Cruz just strings catch phrases, dog whistles and right wing trigger words together but never actually enunciates a position, policy or accomplishment. It really is. I've worked a helpdesk for a decade. Over that time, I started thinking that a plurality of people are loving braindead. Later I amended that after realizing, yes, people come to me because they have a problem, and they're doing that because they can't Google an error message or follow 4 short steps in a support article. I'm disproportionately getting the dumb ones. Surely it's not like that everywhere. Then 2016 happened and I believe that, while my life experience isn't a precise reflection of the population, there are a lot of dumb motherfuckers out there. On a more uplifting note, I'm real happy that Beto did well (could be a touch more collected but I'll take the passion over passivity) and he's already got some sound bytes.

Keeshhound posted:Hilariously, that was a knife that the moderators shoved into him. Yeah, I mean, you can't not make Cruz look bad by just bringing up the subject because he was so loving spineless in that moment. Even if you're being pragmatic, voters would respect you refusing to back Trump. There's definitely some Trump diehards in Texas, but Trump did him real wrong. He's got a real legit beef against Trump. Pragmatically, it would have been a win for Cruz if every time someone asked him about if he backed Trump he said "No, that dude said some awful poo poo about my family and he can go to hell for it." Yeah I saw only a couple minutes while waiting for my wife to start a movie and this is what was going on. Just firing off all the meaningless easily regurgitated right wing one liners. Socialism, Hillary Clinton(???), defend the constitution (god and guns only naturally). Also ted Cruz looks like a partially melted wax goblin and it weirds me out every single time I see that thing.
