It's long enough to be terrible, but manga tend to get more than 10 chapters even if they're disasters. Chagecha is the only series to be cancelled after just one volume in recent years. Most of the time, they get at least two.

Jump generally wants to know if a series can get an audience before canning it.

(Which is part of why Seer's cancellation is so weird. What's even happening here?)

It’s had 28 chapters. I’m not sure why people are so baffled.

the only tangible measure of success we could see, volume sales, was strong

so it does seem weird to just close up on it when by all accounts it was doing fine (without the sort of promotion other series are enjoying). unless like people are theorizing this is a shift to jump+, but i'd rather not get my hopes up.

Worst is that the mangaka hasn't posted anything to his social media since last year.

Alright, I finally started reading Phantom Seer to find out what's so bad/good about it.

From the first few chapters, three things stand out:

  • This sort of cynical, reluctant hero is common across many genres of fiction, but I think it's actually pretty rare for shonen manga. Usually you'd expect the protagonist to have declared either that he'll become the world's best Shaman or that he'll exorcise all the Phantoms by now. The closest parallel I can think of is Twin Star Exorcists, and indeed there's similar hints of a backstory tragedy behind the protagonist's reluctance here, although it seems to be smaller-scale that what happened in Twin Star.
  • The yokai/urban legends setting has been done before, but what stands out about this take is how un-anthropomorphic and small-scale the enemies seem to be. This results in some cool visuals, but it's going to be jarring when they inevitably introduce a group of 4-10 cloak-wearing young men trying to take over the world. Unless they never get around to that, because of the cancellation...
  • The protagonist's power set is pretty arbitrary. It feels like the writer wanted a similar aesthetic to Shikamaru, but decided that Shikamaru's actual powerset wasn't powerful or dramatic enough, so the end result is Trafalgar Law levels of just-does-whatever.

In general, not especially good, but not especially bad either.

Is it even really going to be a comedy? This chapter was definitely a romcom, but it also seems to be setting up battle manga elements for future storylines (Ogre Qigong, the impending danger). Yeah, the "romance" here has been pretty one-sided, hasn't it? The tengu guy might actually like the main girl, though.

I believe was consistently near the end of the ToC before somehow moving to fifth place (not counting manga with color pages, etc.) last week. It's #9 of 15 this week: https://www.reddit.com/r/MangaRanking/comments/mfb7by/weekly_shonen_jump_ranking_17_march_29_2021/

Also, I just read all of Phantom Seer. They did indeed introduce an organization of humanoid villains. This also explains the "entering its final phase" thing, since defeating the leader of the organization is the main character's primary goal, and in the most recent chapter the good guys are on the brink of defeating one of the 5 other members.

Even aside from that (Shonen Jump's rankings have a lot of factors other than raw popularity, which can make it tough to assess from the outside) it's a short gag manga by a veteran, so it has a ton of factors that let it survive longer with low sales.

Doesn't hurt that Shonen Jump has had a lot of flops and finales lately, so something doing just middling can last much longer than it would under more cutthroat circumstances. (Like Agravity Boys managing a whole year).

Magu was cute again.

Elusive Samurai. This arc has been really good.

Me and Roboco was pretty funny. I like Roboco's manga aspirations.

Sakamoto was awesome and promises a good chapter next week. Liking this a lot. I wonder if this assassin will join the group.

Witch Watch. Love it. It's simple and funny. I wonder if it's going to lean more heavily in harem, battle or gag. There's no way this series isn't going to go for Miko thinking it's a harem manga.

Mashle Chapter itself wasn't as good, but Next chapter's going to be peak stupid right? :allears:

Nine Dragons: It's playing everything so straight. I wonder if Tsurugi will be allowed to talk at all anymore post joining. I do love how he has a completely different build from the others and this new guy looks stupid.

Yeah I was kinda lukewarm on Sakamoto for the first couple chapters but it's really found its groove and I'm enjoying it a ton lately.

I was a little worried that Magu-chan would try to get too serious with the third pillar character, but I am so down for a straight-man getting added to the mix.

Good enough that people have been wondering if it'll be serialized since it came out, especially since it's gotten more promotions than most one shots in Jump, and it fills some niches that have been less focused on lately.

Curious if the serialization will start like the one shot, or if they'll draw things out a little more.

While Edens Zero is on crunchyroll (to get it on your phone you need to download the crunchyroll manga app), it only offers chapter 1 then skips to chapter 33.

Also worth checking out is Shangri-La Frontier and Four Knights of the Apocalypse (a sequel to the Seven Deadly Sins manga); they release updated chapters late on Wednesdays. For some strange reason they have the Planet With manga but it ends a whole arc before the anime for some reason (also on crunchyroll)

That's because the Planet With manga is still ongoing.

It started about the same time as the anime, and is in a monthly magazine, so the anime finished before the manga was really going.
