The only one I don't agree with being goon-hyperboled is the anime one. No, not all anime is made for/watched by pedos, but there sure is a hell of a lot of it aimed directly at people who want to gently caress little girls/boys. The ones that do aren't even subtle about it. They know who their audience is and it's not japanese children.

This may be the case, my anime knowledge is pretty mainstream. In any case it's pretty easy to avoid the loli people and talk about DBZ or whatever.

Also why would an adult want to talk about DBZ. People who gush about DBZ are no better than bronies.

Because they enjoy it? Because it's dumb fun about being strong and beating up evil. Because it appeals to the universal fantasy that goddamn it, if you train hard enough and try hard enough, you too can overcome any obstacle and shoot laser beams from your palms.

DBZ is magic in it's ability to appeal to men across nearly every social boundary. I have talked with dudes of every color, class, and creed about how rad Goku is. I have seen it form friendships between muslim powerlifters and wispy jewish programmers, between black dudes and white dudes, between gay and straight, between high finance coffee snobs and the 40oz-guzzling salt of the earth.

Why? Because Goku is the strongest.

As weird as dragon ball z nerds are they are infinitely better than naruto ones. You haven't experienced awkwardness until your friend demonstrates how much faster he can run with his arms held behind his back like they run on that show. He would always talk about one time he caught up to a bus driving 30 mph by running that way.

It never ran here until I was past its demographic, it never looked appealing to me even as a kids show, and frankly I would think adults earnestly discussing any other kids show in depth would be also pretty awkward and boring, but DBZ is the only show with which I see it regularly happening.

The only times I see adults irl talk about it’s just reminiscing and being goofy. It’s kinda in the same realm as star wars where it’s (next to sports) something you can bullshit about with just about any dude. Sailor Moon usually works the same way but with women. Everyone watched it

Vic Mackey was a good cop in The Shield and the department was stupid for continually hamstringing him and trying to get him put away instead of letting him do his job. I have the same opinion to a less extreme degree re: Elliot stabler on SVU except for people trying to get him put away, but he has a bad reputation among fans of the show.

I'm 35 so I'm outside of the age group that would have watched it, but I think it's weird that adults are hung up on it. Like, I loved He man and GI Joe when I was a kid but it's not part of my lifestyle 30 years later.

I dunno. I guess I like some dorky children's poo poo like Lego still myself, but I look at DBZ and from the little I've seen of it it seems like something only children could enjoy.

The best part about being an adult is being able to do childish things without giving a gently caress about how it looks. If I wanna go to disney land tomorrow, watch a bunch of cartoons, and eat chocolate cereal for dinner after getting high, who the gently caress are you to tell me I can't?

the funny thing is at my particular highschool way back when i attended the anime club was the closest hobby group there was to being normal and cool, like half the men's rugby team and half the women's volleyball & baseball teams were in it along with only a few more-typical anime nerds that formed their own subgroup, i wanna say it was so popular because some the most attractive girls were in that club and so other people were drawn in like magnets but maybe it was just because its meeting times didn't interfere with practice or anything so it was good for all the sports kids and their non-sport friends

either way, all the mainstream animes at the time, dbz, pokemon, cowboy beebop, gundam wing, etc were all pretty sanitized and somehow kinda gender neutral in that i remember everyone being a little invested in the goku vs freeza fight or, alternatively, shedding a tear when ash finally let go of butterfree, so i can at least personally appreciate that some animes are just like western cartoons but with a little more effort put in - they're still juvenile and sophomoric but in a way that can appeal to 14-17 year olds instead of just even younger demographics like most western cartoons did at the time

one day the teacher who ran the club and let people use her classroom/tv for movie watching brought in ninja scroll with the understanding that everyone be cool about it, i think it was around when that golem put anime titties in his mouth during the opening rape scene that people realized you kinda want to stick to the mainstream stuff if you just want kid cartoons but for teenagers because there's a rabbit-hole you can quickly descend that showcases the differences in western/eastern sensibilities and the acceptable uses of animation; ninja scroll wasn't even a particularly exploitative film and it has other solid things going for it but there's def a ton of stuff out that gets much worse

yeah there's no denying that particular anime club was a statistical anomaly

i was on the rugby team but i only went to that anime club a few times, i remember going once and seeing one of the girls i had a crush on talking very enthusiastically about goku's 100x gravity training and, coming from probably our best volleyball player, it was somehow surreal - years later when ronda rousey publicly wore some dbz merch it reminded me of that strange affinity between anime and sports kids that i'd seen before

I took one to homecoming, she was like 4 ft 2 and about 200 pounds. I only asked her because she asked a guy in our friend group and he said he'd rather die and I wanted to be nice. When we got there she immediately sat on the floor with her other "witches" and wouldn't talk to me the whole night until she wanted to go home.

The other guy was right.

That's very true but it did have substance to it in a way that say, He-Man didn't really. It's childish sure but kinda like disney films, it's got enough to not be awful as an adult.

Maybe my anime experience is different because I am slightly younger than some other goons (born 1992), but yeah until I got active on the internet (first read SA in 2006) I didn't really associate anime with crazy fetish poo poo, and not until more recently did it stand out to me that goons think the creepy fetishes and pedophilia was normal anime stuff.

In elementary school DBZ was wildly popular among boys, pokemon was gender-neutral popular although boys got more into the games, digimon and sailor moon each had a slight male/female lean, but yeah anime was one of the things that everyone liked, like the lotr or spider man movies.

By high school there were still plenty of normal, well-adjusted kids with fond memories of those shows and watching current poo poo like Death Note. Consequently a lot of people my age group still remember those shows and while they're not citizen loving kane, they're decent to rewatch and good to bullshit about like sports or star wars. There's weirdos sure but off the internet you have to look for them to find them. (outside of a college campus)

For reference probably the weirdest anime I've seen was ouran high school host club.

lol, dragonball is an ugly, stupid piece of garbage, that's not to say the other cartoons weren't. i guess one of the few good things about growing up in a socialist / post-socialist country was that cartoons were made by non-profit studios, so while they were weird, at least they were creative
