It dawns on me that the US national COVID public messaging is following the exact same sort of Playbook that the National Hurricane Center (NHC) uses with hurricane forecasting, but the NHC has way more experience at what they do. In particular, meteorologists and hobbyist hurricane trackers know that there are very nonlinear changes that can happen in hurricane modeling that can rapidly shift the cone of uncertainty. However, the NHC prefers to blend/interpolate these changes as smoothly as possible whenever it occurs because any excessive whiplash heightens panic in the public. When there is some sort of bifurcated outcome, they typically hedge down the middle until they need to start blending toward one direction as well. I think our health response is trying and failing to do the same. We're watching them trying to ever so slowly dial the public toward reality a bit, but in reality SARS-CoV-2 is moving the goalposts even more quickly.
