So much of this world is lovely and depressing, but as someone who was raised Jewish, watching this poo poo happen, coming from "our people" is just utterly loving depressing. I have a hard time even blaming it on a systemic issue like capitalism. Yes, it's obviously systemic, but there's just such a deep-seated hatred at work here.

On the one hand I will hear from people from my folks generation say "If Israel ceased to exist tomorrow all the Jews there will be killed and the world wouldn't care" and then hear from people my in my generation say "Israel is a ethno-Apartheid state that needs to cease to exist at once" and have to figure out how to fix one problem without causing the other. Add to this the idea that I have always had that as Jews we should be better than all this after all we have gone through. It's kind of wild talking to Jews here in Canada and talking to Israelis and how the differences in what each side thinks Israel should/shouldn't be.

Madkal posted:Ashkelon is in Israel so do you consider power plants getting hit in Israel a war crime or not? Well, folks in Gaza firing things at Israel is technically war-like, and also a crime. But definitely not a "war crime". A nation firing on its own people, however, is.

I mean, the settlements are already a war crime without any additional factors, so Israel has been perpetually war criming for like several decades at least. Whether any of this will cross a line where the US won't use a veto to shut up any international condemnation is the real question and frankly it feels like we have our hands too full with domestic issues for Biden to have any interest in poking that hornet's nest

Just watched footage of the stun grenades and flash bangs being hurled about the Al Asqa mosque and it looked like the perfect mashup for what when down at the White House and across the street at that church. America standing with Israel took on new meaning.

As far as I know, and wiki backs it up, but Ashkelon was never considered a settlement (ie an illegal settlement that came about post 1967).

Madkal posted:As far as I know, and wiki backs it up, but Ashkelon was never considered a settlement (ie an illegal settlement that came about post 1967). My response, at least, was assuming that the "this is a war crime" bit was more about police presence supporting the settlers and the repeated air strikes of civilian areas, the power plant getting hit is kind of irrelevant in the big scheme of things because the accuracy of the rockets from Gaza is questionable at best, unless something changed since the last time rockets were being fired aimlessly in protest Edit: Basically, someone will surely go "I meant to do that!" and claim credit, but basically every time this situation occurs, the Palestinian side fires a bunch of poo poo that doesn't do anything and then the IDF goes in and kills a bunch of civilians in retaliation, so it's hard to believe that THIS time they suddenly have more effective munitions and the capacity to do anything beyond flail Like, assuming for a second that wikipedia is an adequate source here for at least the order of magnitude of the numbers: "from 2004 to 2014 these attacks have killed 27 Israeli civilians, 5 foreign nationals, 5 IDF soliders, and at least 11 Palestinians" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_rocket_attacks_on_Israel And then in retaliation: 2008-9: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_War_(2008%E2%80%932009) "between 1166 and 1417 Palestinian deaths and 13 Israeli deaths (4 from friendly fire)" 2012: "174 Palestinians were killed" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Israeli_operation_in_the_Gaza_Strip 2014: "Between 2125 and 2310 Gazans were killed" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Gaza_War BougieBitch fucked around with this message at 22:31 on May 11, 2021 |

The "left wing" zionists were the stupidest most useless sad sacks that ever existed. Oh yeah were gonna be a socialist paradise but base our society on a brutal ethnostate, that most lefty of concepts. This won't inevitably descend into reactionary naked fascism that lays waste to our "leftwing politics" in a generation no siree.

I think something way better then the current situation might have been able to be salvaged before the occupation of West Bank/Gaza, but from '67 onwards it was pretty much a clear path to Apartheid South Africa.

Hmm, a giant ghetto surrounded by troops where the troops daily use stand off weapons to level civilian buildings on the vague premise of rooting out insidious elements. Where have I heard this before. I feel like it was some kind of uprising of some sort. Maybe in Poland? Not sure.

IDK if a German-American (like 55% of white people) should have to identify with Germany. It's even stranger when you are talking about Ashkenazis, that "ancestral home" was destroyed. It's gone. A forgotten yiddish street sign in Lviv, a building that was once something, but everyone who knew that has been dead for 80 years. Gone. Being forced to identify with Israel is a form of antisemitism imo

I think a lot of my parent's generation grew up hearing stories of their parents and family fleeing Germany or being killed in the Holocaust. I don't think they are being pushed to support Israel because of the conservatives.

I feel like it's possible to support Israel as a concept without approving of many of the actions they've taken in the past and are taking now. The options aren't limited to "Israel shouldn't exist, and ought to be eliminated" and "war crimes and expanding settlements are good!"
