I started my current gig at 116K in Jan 2021. We have an Engineering title though, not Administrator or Specialist or whatever. Location/Industry all that is a factor. I feel like we get paid a little extra for dealing with all the BS that comes with financial regulations.

I’m in Seattle and make $140k as a senior architect with an additional 10% bonus that doesn’t count because I don’t have any control over. But the job is in the Sacramento valley in California, so I don’t know if this counts as high CoL or not.

I’m a senior infrastructure engineer and soon to be senior SRE (bureaucratic change, it’s not a functional role change, I despised the “infrastructure” part of my title  ). You’re getting robbed, especially if you have a clearance. You can probably sleepwalk your way through sec+. Even working directly for the feds you’ll likely see a huge bump. Consider checking out the Blind app, which despite being full of libertarian assholes is great for salary comparisons. levels.fyi is worth looking at too, if only so you feel more confident asking for stupid money. Been laid off since July 1st. Went through the interview process for two companies (6+ hours of interviews for each) only to be sent a rejection e-mail by one of them at 8 pm the night before labor day. Nice! I'm hearing from tech recruiters that it takes 75 applications in IT to receive one interview request. Only 25% of job postings are all-remote, and 75% of applicants are applying for those all-remote jobs - I'm seeing 200+ applicants on job postings within a few hours of jobs being posted. Meanwhile, Detroit's biggest employers, Ford, GM, and Rocket Mortgage, have all been laying people off. Hopeless.

To this, all I can say is do home labs and put it on your resume as consulting. It might not be “ethical”, but honestly gently caress the big employers with their impossible demands for experience without ever giving you the chance to get it in the first place. As long as you can actually do the thing you’re putting on your resume, I don’t think it’s unethical to portray lab work as professional work, especially if you’ve been unemployed for awhile. Just make sure to put on your resume that you’ve been “consulting” since you left your last job! It’s a stupid kinda obvious dodge but people are people and stupid obvious tricks work on them all the time.

I appreciate all the advice, I have about six years of experience as a BSA managing software and web development-related projects, including getting my Masters in UI/UX and graduating the semester everything was shutdown (my paid internship was also cancelled, and I struggled for months to find a job). I have done some consulting and have the open ended "consulting" experience in my LinkedIn profile, but for my resume, I just have my specific projects listed with the clients I worked with. I could probably re-organize the resume to include an opened ended consulting project, as well. The professional summary is way too wordy and long and my eyes glazed over it. The actual professional experience section is constrained by your three bullet points per job restriction. It doesn’t need to be that consistent! With resumes, brevity and connecting your work to discrete business outcomes is key, both of which i think your resume could use more of. If you’re applying to non-UX technical roles I’d put certs front and centre since your job titles aren’t super obviously technical. I also don’t think the objective is necessary at all. If I put a ton of bullet points in my experience, their eyes will just glaze over in those sections as well. Some sections could be re-organized, but it's just going to be the same things repeated and reformatted. I've read that professional summaries are great because nobody actually reads the resume or cover letter parts. Maybe I could add a Skills section? I sat down and ran the numbers, and while I could join the Dark Side and go into sales (AMs with legit tech backgrounds print money, because they dont have to lie.) but OE money is more consistent, there's no moving sales goalposts, and while you don't get all the dumb salesperson perks... figuring out how to be an enterprise AM, finding a job that pays commission fairly, and then getting into an established client base is 3-4 years minimum. I've been having nothing but "run-in" (systems going through stress testing) problems all week. Granted it's been a shorter week. I got a system from Google that I can't actually test without asking my engineer for help because of data mismatch. Then another system had it's main board swapped, passed the first round of testing, got pulled so we could fix a broken tester failing to BMC reset properly (needed to update MAC and TPM data for each new unit) and mysteriously poo poo the bed and died overnight. Ran it in and it only error codes power up issues recorded previously after reboot failures. nVidia has not been helpful with deciphering this and it's their proprietary board.  Last system I touched today is.. fine except when I try to grab the vBios data for my log. No issues with the 10,000 dollar GPUs or anything. I can use some scripting similar to "touch" to figure out what the actual bios information is but the moment I try to pull that data for my log it causes a kernel panic. Have some more legwork I gotta do but gonna guess that's corrupted.

You don't need a Sec+ to work Federal IT outside of the DoD, and that mostly applies to other certification as well outside of actual cybersecurity dedicated jobs which require certs, but those jobs are going to ask for much higher pedigree certs than Sec+ anyways. Unless you're specifically looking for a DoD job, which can be a good way to get your foot in the door to federal service, I wouldn't bother with it.

I got passed over for an in-house promotion for an outside hire which really really sucks... but I get along great with the new guy and its cathartic as gently caress to see his surprise at the weird unoptimized poo poo we do, like how we handle imaging, and our inability to dispose or broken hardware since it was bought with grant money

Lol yup. I've got a dozen pallets of computers in storage that are 10+ years old because the state turn-in processes are garbage. At least they're in a warehouse, as soon as we take them to the disposal site they just sit out in the weather till someone pays $40 for a pallet on govdeals

Salary chat: I make 95k as a junior linux engineer working remote at a NYC company but that's apparently low enough for the area that they had some candidates asking half again as much. I didn't get a counter-offer when I asked for 95k so oops I probably could have made a bit more. At this point I could probably make more money but the work/life balance is good, the culture is good, I make enough money to live comfortably in the above average COL area I live in, I'm learning a lot, and I've got a good team with a good boss. After three years I had forgotten what it was like to not hate your job.
