Cheers guys, I'm in no massive rush and the split will hopefully mean they get through customs without extra charges at least.

Call Me Charlie posted:Ben Hur/The Ten Commandments - $11.98 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AMSLDW4...TBCRHS3QZAJMSE5 It's a bit cheaper at WBshop.com at $9 http://www.wbshop.com/product/benhur++ten+commandments+dbfe+1000378270.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=&from=Search Honestly anything Warner home video related is probably cheaper than Amazon from WBShop.com for now.

Well, poo poo. I'm broke but $8 for Pulp Fiction and Beetlejuice is too good to pass up. I almost bought Star Trek Into Darkness too, but I'll wait on that one a little while, I guess.

I introduced my wife to the Lord of the Rings films, and now she's totally in love with them. What's the definitive version? Is it the 15 disc box set?

Unless you think the extended versions drag on a bit too long (I don't), that certainly is the version to get. Also, those bonus discs (which, unfortunately, are all DVDs) are an absolutely stunning watch - especially the 6 DVDs that were made specifically for the extended editions. I still consider them to be the most enjoyable set of bonus material any movie release has ever had (that I've seen). Zat fucked around with this message at 00:53 on Nov 29, 2013 |

They could never make a film like Ben Hur again, PETA would go apeshit over the horses getting hurt in the chariot scene.

So I'm assuming the "get a PS3 for blu-ray" from the OP is out of date. Anyone have any recommendations for a cheapish blu-ray player?

Yaws posted:So I'm assuming the "get a PS3 for blu-ray" from the OP is out of date. Anyone have any recommendations for a cheapish blu-ray player? As a side note though, I have a PS4 now and it's reeeeally nice for playing Blu-Rays. Nicer than the PS3 was. It's got a 6x Blu-Ray drive, so movies load a lot faster than they did on the PS3. It's easier to navigate through movies with the DualShock 4 controller, too. I don't have a remote, but it's no trouble at all to use the controller. At $400, it's a lot to spend for just a Blu-Ray player, but if there are games out now that you want to play or games that have been announced for the future that you know you're going to want to play, it's definitely worth it if you want to use it as your Blu-Ray player too.

Is there anything wrong with PS3 as a bluray player? I'm getting a PS3 to play all the last gen console games I missed out on after my 360 red ringed 3ish years ago and figured I could use it in place of my 3ish year old BD player.

I still use mine and like it, the thing I hate is the remote I got with it. No backlight, too many buttons for functions that I never use, and the ones I use regularly are not prominent enough to find them by touch. Maybe there are better ones out there now. Also, it works via bluetooth not infrared, so if you want to use a universal remote you'll need some kind of adapter. Logitech has one for the Harmony series.

Panasonic players with wifi are nice in my experience. They have Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video which is more services than most other smart players. The user interface isn't bad either.

The Abyss and True Lies should be next year. Part of the wait was James Cameron wanting them remastered by Reliance Mediaworks, as was done for The Terminator, Aliens, and Titanic. Also, more Twilight Time releases; Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974, Sam Peckinpah) - March 10 Equus (1977, Sidney Lumet) - March 10 Conrack (1974, Martin Ritt) - March 10 All the King's Men (1949, Robert Rossen) - March 10 Fever Pitch (1996, David Evans) - March 10 Broadway Danny Rose (1984, Woody Allen) - April 8 Wild at Heart (1990, David Lynch) - April 8 Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962, Henry Koster) - April 8 Used Cars (1980, Robert Zemeckis) - April 8 Rita, Sue, and Bob Too (1986, Alan Clarke) - April 8 Egbert Souse fucked around with this message at 00:09 on Dec 2, 2013 |

Hercules is on Blu-Ray in Holland (and streams in HD on Netflix US), and Ravenous and True Lies got an anamorphic PAL releases at least (& there's also an HD of True Lies based on its DTheater release). There is an existing HD transfer of The Abyss that's serviceable but only in the sense that it's leaps and bounds ahead of the awful DVD. I've seen it be shown on TV a couple of times here in the UK. While it's the best version available it's nothing compared to the quality that I expect Reliance's transfer will be. I might actually still have it on my Sky box but I think I'll just wait for the Blu Ray at this point, I've seen the film plenty of times already. Curiously it was the US version which is technically still banned from cinema exhibition and home video release in the UK but those rules apparently don't apply to TV broadcasting (I was straight in touch with the BBFC after seeing it to find out if this meant they'd passed it uncut, but alas.)

The consensus is that the transfer used for broadcast is the same as the one used for the dvd, possibly an anamorphic version. Van Ling has confirmed there is a HD remaster, but it hasn't been cleared by Cameron and most likely won't see the light of day because it's 5-6 years old now.
