Alberta is basically the American-est province and the rest of Canada would happily cede it to the first country that came knocking.

Surely this is only the higher end incomes that are signing up early to avoid any Trump buffornery with the program?

Subsidies are priced by the cost of silver plans which Trump made skyrocket. But there are also bronze plans that are still subsidized based on the cost of the silver plans which means bronze plans are dirt cheap if not free for tons of people now that are not particularly high earners but probably doing OK financially.

The article says you're all good if you make less than $48,000 (single) or $96,000 (family of four). At least for a bronze plan, whatever level of coverage that actually means. Outside of that you are super hosed.

Bronze plans usually have the lowest monthly premiums but the highest costs when you get care. They can be a good choice if you usually use few medical services and mostly want protection from very high costs if you get seriously sick or injured. Note: Bronze plan deductibles can be very high. This means you could have to pay thousands of dollars of health care costs yourself before your plan starts to pay its share. All health plans in all categories provide free preventive services, and some plans offer other services at low or no cost before you meet your deductible.

High deductible plans are not the worst thing in the world for a lot of people, I have a high deductible plan because I don't have any chronic health problems nor take medication and I can easily come up with a few grand if I ended up needing major medical care.
