Anybody else here grow up in Southern California and remember him on local broadcasting? In hindsight, he was a prelude to where we are today with regard to right-wing media/punditry. He hosted a show for conservatives called 'Hot Seat' in the 1980s where he'd basically just have liberals/hippies/LGBTQ on so that he and his mouth-frothingly fascist audience could scream at them with the eventual goal of having them physically removed from the set by security. poo poo was wild. He had a poster of a space shuttle launch behind him in every episode that read "USA is #1" and sported Trump's haircut before it was Trump's haircut. I did, and I do! Only caught wind of him when I was working graveyards 'guarding' an empty building Raytheon used to have. Got a tiny TV (I think one of those old TV/radio combo things?) so I wouldn't die of boredom and saw the show because it was on a station that also showed horse racing replays. Crazy poo poo indeed.

For now, high profile conservatives make vague threats and scream in all caps every time anyone conservative is banned from social media for any reason. Funniest part about stripping 302 immunity is it would make social media companies much more proactive in who they ban from their platform. It would just make it even harder for them to get on these platforms.

I mistakenly typed 302 instead of 230. For those who haven't looked into it, section 230 mainly protects web sites from lawsuits based on user comments. Ken White wrote some good legal analysis of 230 protection back in 2015.Niwrad posted:Funniest part about stripping 302 immunity is it would make social media companies much more proactive in who they ban from their platform. It would just make it even harder for them to get on these platforms. That makes sense for 230 in general. The most specific proposal I have seen involves just the "Good Samaritan" provisions of 230. Those provisions protect sites from liability if they block content based on a good-faith belief it is "obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable." So in other words, if you want to sue Twitter for suspending your account, you have to prove they did so in bad faith. That's going to be very difficult given how broad "otherwise objectionable" is and how much deference the courts give to web sites with respect to "good-faith belief". Christian conservatives want to make these lawsuits easier somehow. Perhaps congress will fill that part in.

No social media company wants to, or even can, spend the money on lawsuits and moderators that would be required to operate without 230 protection. Twitter is already unprofitable, being forced to behave like they were a publisher would burn them and their business model to the ground. That video is pretty wild but for those who don't know, in the comments someone contextualizes it. It's actually a raccoon, not a cat, and the man is throwing said raccoon because it was attacking his dog.

Re: Ben Shapiro: https://www.vox.com/2019/5/9/18410886/ben-shapiro-right-side-of-history Read this interview Ben Shapiro did with Vox about his new book "The Right Side of History". The interviewer is incredibly adept and articulate at dismantling Shapiro's lies, lies by omission, and what ultimately amounts to an extreme, Christianized revisionist take on history in his book. Shapiro essentially concedes to his arguments almost every time - it's almost surreal. Maybe one day Democrats and liberals might take conservatives seriously when they say they want to establish an extremely deregulated capitalist society justified by draconian, theocratic bullshit in the mold of Israel and/or the Handmaid's Tale. Shapiro and other conservative ghouls like him know the way to do this is to rewrite history first. These people are literal fascists, and our worthless media institutions like CNN and the WaPo are telling us Shapiro is a "moderate conservative" because he didn't vote for Trump (he fully supports him now though, and said he will vote for him in 2020) and because the alt-right called him a kike on twitter.

interesting talk about the principle of sufficient reason there leibniz was, at the very least, a rather unconventional christian and actually developed a lot of his theory in response to an already-ongoing scientific revolution. it's actually an interesting observation to place it into the ideology of modern science and, though i don't really think it's valid, you could at least write a decent bachelor's level philosophy paper on it
