And the $700/mo comes from a car payment, car insurance, phone, internet/cable, and "other" stuff like basic utilities and what I believe to be a credit card payment. I'm not sure how it breaks down because all I know is that it's "about $700 a month."

I wish more failed restaurant owner in my city would just kill themselves instead of spending the next six months after getting boarded up raising more capital to open another restaurant that this neighborhood will eat at once and forget until you announce you are closing again. I'm not sure where you're getting that from, but no, not always. Her situation is a bit different, though, in that her savings is being torn apart by the move and she won't be able to save much at all post-move because she's a free-spender who doesn't cook and loves buying clothes and other goods that she doesn't need.

Devian666 posted:

I'm guessing that she'll have about $600-$700 leftover once her health insurance goes live. So $1400 in rent and $700-800 in straight bills (and gas, which is unavoidable due to her commute), which leaves $600-$700 for what will probably go toward take out/restaurants, groceries, clothing, whatever else (fun stuff that she's used to doing all the time, like bars and lounges) and little to no savings (or the typical "save what's leftover" disaster).

One example of why the situation is concerning is that not even two months ago did she complain about missing out on a dinner with friends because she couldn't afford to buy gas until she got paid the next day.

The only person who genuinely can say they don't have a passion for food in some way or another is the Soylent guy.

Check any place where people put down interests, hobbies or passions and 99% of the time food, cooking, eating, baking, etc, is going to be listed at least once. That leads to everyone believing they can succeed because they have this passion for food, and if Gordan Ramsey has taught people anything with his Kitchen Nightmares show, it's that all you need is passion to be a successful restaurant owner!

From the "Overheard at work" thread on the MMM forum ("CW" is coworker):

quote:

CW: I'm gonna get a dog this weekend!
Me: Oh wow, that's fun! What kind?
CW: [tells me the breed but I didn't recognize it but I don't know breeds, so nbd]
Me: Nice! You're all ready to take care of it? (Single guy, so can't be sure)
CW: Well sure, I just gotta get some paperwork so the bank will approve me so I can get the dog.
Me: Wait, why does a bank have the dog you want?
CW: No, I need a loan for the dog.
Me: How much is this dog?!?
CW: $1500, down from $2200, getting to be a good deal. But the bank has to let me get that much.
Me: That's a really expensive dog; and what will you do if it needs to go to the vet b/c it's injured or sick? That gets expensive really fast! Idk if you can buy a dog with a loan?
CW: I'm not sure. But I really want this dog.

WHAT. I know some dogs are that expensive, but not one that will just be a pleasure dog (no hunting, no work of any sort, no shows). We just got a puppy; I tried to warn him that it's several hundred dollars in vet visits the first few months. And I've never heard of taking out a loan to get a puppy! Can they repossess the dog if you don't pay on time? Poor little guy! The CW in question makes approx. $12/hr. He's not rolling in dough, nor saving at the moment, so idk how he'd handle a vet bill. Insanity.

My wife bakes. She's good at it. People tell her, "OMG, YOU COULD TOTALLY DO THIS FOR A LIVING!". To which my wife says, "would you pay $3 for that cupcake, regularly?"

It's got to be so easy for people who are good at baking to fall into that trap where everyone they're giving food to for free thinks they'd make a fortune if they'd only charge people. Easy enough at least that I've seen 3 bakeries in a 2 mile radius go under in the last 3 years.

Her rent and bills would be more manageable without the car payment (which I think is in the upper 200 to low 300 range) but Bay Area rent prices are insane and can make even the slightest amount of bills feel like too much when you're not making a Bay Area salary.

For example, one of the new "luxury" buildings in San Francisco (about 45 minutes west of her suburb) is successfully renting studios for just under $3000/mo. Yeah.

Spend the time it takes to get something you like. You're going (supposed?) to spend 1/3 of your life in it. While I am not saying you need to spend $1000+ on a mattress it isn't necessarily bad with money.

Mattress shopping is basically a scam though. You can't really spend an amount of time and find what you need because it's almost impossible to know what a mattress will feel like after 30 minutes, 3 hours, etc, and in the weird positions you sleep in.

The manufacturers purposely obfuscate the models so it's almost impossible to compare between different retailers. The MSRPs are complete fiction too so it's hard to compare deals. They use different terms for the same thing, and use a ton of buzzwords/bullshit that are meaningless.

There's no "good" way to do it was my conclusion last time I tried. I wound up just getting a well reviewed memory foam unit from Amazon/Overstock and it's been great. But going to a store and even spending a lot of time looking at mattresses isn't really going to get you anywhere.

I did something similar. Shopped around online looking for good reviews then went out of my way to find stores that carried the ones I liked. I looked at four and I could tell almost instantly that I didn't like two of them. Online reviews are good, but you can't know what "firm" or "soft" means to everyone.

Yeah, this is all true. Most of the major mattress brands are owned by the same parent company, and they have a stranglehold on the retail industry. It's impossible to get away from this if you shop at common B&M stores like Sleep Country. The worst part is that the mattresses manufactured by these major lines are designed to fail after 3-5 years. Then the consumer is forced to play into the racket again.

There are a lot of independent mattress manufacturers that make quality products that are fairly priced and designed to last. Spending a decent amount of money for a good mattress like this is both good with money and good with life.

https://www.themattressunderground.com is a good resource for finding smaller manufacturers in your area and for learning about mattresses in general. The site has a substantial latex foam bias though, so it might not be as useful for everyone.
