I admit that I had a little trouble voting for the first time in my life, because I did early voting, and apparently it really matters that your name matches on the envelope exactly to what they have, so multiple poll workers had to figure out where I was supposed to list "Jr."

I'm in the middle of reading Means of Ascent, the 2nd of Robert Caro's books on LBJ, which focuses mainly on the 1948 senate race in TX. (What a loving mess that was, btw) On the one hand, it's amazing how far we've come in regards to elections being honest, I imagine most of the poo poo people were pulling in that race would hilariously backfire if attempted today, I would hope... OTOH, maybe in 70 years people will be having the same realizations about these elections, and view anything from 20th century and before as an abject parody of democracy

So in conversation yesterday, my wife's father shared with her how awful he thinks Trump is, and how he can't stand him, etc. He is a total womanizer, sells his prescription meds and weed to teens his youngest daughter goes to school with, rips people off every chance he gets, and has been living off the wealth of his parents his whole life. He's very self-aware of his lack of scruples and sort of revels in it. He went on to say that one of the evening news anchors he was listening to made a great point, in that Hillary has been a target for over 30 years by the GOP and no one's been able to tie poo poo to her/she's clean, and that if that wasn't enough then nothing will be. My wife had to admit that it was one of the more lucid thoughts he's shared with her in a long time, and she was so proud of him. She also said how crazy it was that he felt that way but that -my- mom, a born-again Christian, is posting all this crazy poo poo to facebook that god put trump on earth to save us all and all of this other psychotic garbage. So, my successful and, on the surface, morally-upright mother is voting for trump because white people, amiright; and my wife's father, a self-described pig of a man, is voting for Hillary. My wife had to end the conversation after he said that she should have let him hatefuck my mother the last time they were both at our house for the weekend; that my wife should have helped him roofie her. This. loving. Election.

I got a wonderful chain email from my grandmother informing me of a list of 10 reasons why some hardcore conservative was going to vote for Trump after much prayer and reflection. They boiled down to "because he's running as a republican, I will plug my ears and pretend he isn't anathema to everything I pretend to stand for." It also insinuated Hillary will bring about the apocalypse because she may or may not be an actual demon. Just like Obama was literally the antichrist and we are all already dead. What happens when the pundits will inevitably claim he lost because he wasn't conservative enough, like they always do? There isn't really much further right you can go aside from just saying you're gonna just be Hitler once elected...

One of my friends just learned that both her parents as well as her extended family are all voting for Trump. In Florida. So I got anti-Arzy duty today. Her mom's reasoning involves the story that Hillary stole furniture from the White House after the first Clinton administration.  Meanwhile, my own grandmother, who absolutely hated the Clintons in the 90's, just cast her own ballot for Hillary. In California, but still: way to go.
