Subsidized housing, UHC, high GDP? They definitely have issues but the ruling party contract is provide for citizens. I think they got below 60% or lost one seat in an election or something and it was seen as a big loss for them and they made some big changes to try and regain it. Also work to hobble the opposition but its hard to say they don't focus on their people.

This is vague cause I haven't paid attention to Singapore recently so feel free to correct. That said, pay absolutely matters in terms of competency. The Economist had a piece on it at one point looking at full time and well paid legislatures, finding they wrote better laws.

So, practically guaranteed a shutdown now. House Republicans are just poo poo-flinging chimpanzees wordlessly screeching at each other. They're putting more effort in to impeachment sound bites for Fox to broadcast than they are keeping the lights on. I'm putting 30 days in the betting pool. They have no plan and a large portion of the house Republicans want there to be no plan. Dismantling the government is their goal, not something to be avoided. The majority is so slim that I feel the true MAGA believers will never accept a deal and are just totally OK letting the mother fucker burn, and that there's enough of them to ensure there is never a Republican plan. The way I see things shaking out is the hardcore fundamentalists will never agree to a deal and McCarthy is going to have to work with dems, which will be signing his and more than a few other representatives political death warrants. They'll do everything possible to never, ever do that. Until poo poo gets bad, and the money starts to hurt, nothing happens. The money is going to have to start yanking leashes so hard there's no choice left and it's going to take a good, long while to get to that point.

As an Australian this is all loving wild.

Dems have 46 votes (controlling for Sanders+1, Manchin-1 and Sinema-1, and assuming Harris is a -1 because Decorum), R 49, I 4 (Sanders -1, Manchin & Sinema +2).

So the Dems need to peel 4 votes to pass simple majority things.

But that can't happen because the entire other half of the room never got past temper tantrums. And they were elected by people who wanted this?

The Senate has actually passed a couple temporary funding bills to try and keep the lights on, the real roadblock here is the House of Representatives which has 435 voting seats. You need 218 seats for a majority, and currently the Republicans hold 221 seats while the Democrats have 212 (plus 2 vacancies in Rhode Island and Utah, which will likely end up being +1 R and +1 D when filled).

So if the Republicans want to pass something out of the House with no Democrats supporting, they need 218 out of 221 Republican members to vote in favor, which means that it only takes 4 Republican holdouts to lock everything up.

The Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy holds his position by majority vote, so while he might decide to try and pass a budget with some Democratic votes he would immediately be branded as a traitor by the party and likely voted out as Speaker. The only way right now he keeps his position is if he somehow reaches a compromise position with enough Republican and Democratic votes for passing a budget *as well as* keeping him as Speaker, which is likely impossible with the current state of the House GOP and Republican Party in general.

Honestly have no idea why he even wants the position at this point, this whole exercise demonstrates that he's got no actual power to do anything besides keep the seat cushion warm.

edit - oh and in comparison to the Australian Parliament, all House seats are up for election every two years (next is Nov 2024) and there is no way to dissolve the House or have elections early if it is unable to function

Singapore shows that you can actively suppress free expression, squash non-mainstream existence, and strangle the existence of any kind of subculture, and the result works (for differing values of "works" of course) but there's infrastructure, big buildings, clean streets, money flowing, etc.

Singapore is a pretty tough exception to handle because its got huge contrasts between socialism/capitalism and liberalism/totalitarianism. The bureaucracy is well paid and competent, and works to balance everything out to an extent for their citizens, which is mostly the point of government. The people in charge have to have some pretty good ethics to maintain the balance they have while having the level of control they do. I would say they are slightly better than the gulf states when it comes to slave labor and a kept citizenry.

I dunno though, I haven't lived there for an extended period and don't have a nuanced understanding.
