You can afford a Blackbird, but you're too cheap to maintain it properly?!? Well, he sort of is. Those are really short oil change intervals for a Blackbird, and as long as it doesn't have friction modifiers there's no issue with using car oil (particularly if you change it that often). But apart from that he's not really skimping on anything. You can't really argue with results either.

Well, I was referring more to the used/damaged tires more than anything else. I don't use OEM filters or cycle-specific oil either (NAPA Gold/Shell Rotella), but digging someone else's throwaways out of the tire pile, plugging them, and putting them on a big, heavy sport-tourer is where I draw the line.

I race on takeoffs when I can't afford a new set. People do really dumb poo poo like replace tires every other trackday at C pace. Or will toss tires because they don't like the profile. If you're in good with a dealership and running that kinda mileage, it can be totally safe to run takeoffs/used tires. I haven't bought a new tire since I had the ZZR1200.

Yeah, those are the A/s Bionic kneeguards. They give a ton of protection but are bulky (won't fit under jeans), they squeak, and if you wear them over your pants you will scratch the everliving gently caress out of your bike.

It's not like it's more dangerous if a tire blows on a Blackbird or something. Anyway he said he properly patches them, not just temporary plugs or something so in my opinion it's totally safe and a good idea. I like that guy

There should be a 'Mileage High' club for bikers. I can't imagine that there are many people in the world who have put 850k on a single bike (even if it was across two engines).

I dunno. you can get late '90s/early '00 superblackbirds for under £3500 all day long, '97's and '98's don't really break £3000, so it's not like they're crazy expensive or even that rare.

It's big, heavy, and powerful. Agree to disagree, I guess. I just imagine that if I came in here bragging about my dumpster Michelin that I pulled the drywall screw out of so I can get another 5K out of 'er, I'd be roasted alive for being too cheap to just buy a new tire. Guess I'm wrong. vv

Bucephalus posted:I'd be roasted alive for being too cheap to just buy a new tire. gently caress that, if your bike is more than just a weekend toy you bet your arse punctures get repaired and the tyres get ridden till they're trapezoidal. Tyres are ridiculously expensive to throw them away over a simple puncture. I run ultraseal (http://www.ultraseal.com/) in my rear tyres, i've taken them in to be replaced and found more than one nail/screw/foreign object still in the tyre, though usually if i spot them i pull them out and let the hole close up fully. there was no loss of pressure or problems with any of them, even ones worn to the cords. edit, didnt realise this was the videos thread, here's an old classic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CGaOUxLX44 echomadman fucked around with this message at 17:22 on Apr 11, 2011 |

To be fair what you quoted there doesn't seem to know anything other than 'he's dead' and it sounds like it came from the people he worked for, which probably wont be the first to say 'he was riding like a knob and got smashed while crossing a double yellow'.
