They're sweeter and there's just something lacking. I pretty much stopped eating beans on toast when I moved out here because it was so disappointing.

Personal AFP: when I first moved to Florida from Boston, I had no idea what grits were. Like, the conversation between Joe Peschi and the cook at the diner in My Cousin Vinny literally happened to me irl. Anyway, the first time I had them, I thought they were similar to oatmeal, and I added sugar. The looks of horror I got from other southerners in the greasy spoon diner I was in was incredible (I was eating at the counter, so in full view of everyone). To this day, I still put sugar into my grits (I do add salt and pepper as well too).

There's a whole lot of pimped up versions now, like curry or mexican. But from the original line up/styles the BBQ sauce one is OK I think, but also here in Australia we have the ham and tomato and an original recipe tomato one (that has a bit more flavour then the regular tomato sauce cans). It's OK but I normally flavour it up with a thin smear of vegemite underneath, some maggi sauce, pepper or some chilli flakes on top (or chilli sauce), and of course butter the toast. If I'm not eating it on toast then the default is a couple of fried eggs with pepper or chilli or other stronger sauce in a similar style. E: They're nothing like boston baked beans though no matter how you dress them up. Fo3 has a new favorite as of 08:01 on Feb 20, 2017 |
