CainFortea posted:24/6=4 Is that how they do it? I've been assuming they do it like every ship I know does it and uses four hour shifts, except for the two hour dog watches to stagger the rotation or you're standing one in two and it's 6-on-6-off. To me four-shift rotation means there's four shifts (like red, white, blue, green shift) so you end up working 4 on, 12 off, and the shifts are staggered so you don't have the same people working the mids every night.

Crew of 30. How would you manage the shift rotations? Knowing that there is no real vacation, no real weekend, even if technically you're not working/on call. Like, I've spent a lot of thought on it lol.

I guess they use eight hour shifts, so they're probably manned by enough people so you can go spell off one or two people to go eat during mealtimes and stuff. We certainly see a lot of bridge crew leaving their positions to go on away missions and stuff and someone is available to slide in and take over.

I did a 12 on 8 off for several months while sleeping in a tent and was expected to have a parade level looking uniform and food was only served three times a day and you were just out of luck if the timing didn’t work out your perception of time gets weird as you slowly through shift through day/night cycles and the only way to manage it was to partner with someone to nap illegally and hope they woke you in time to not get caught

Like a symbiont for your dog so they become Porthos Bork and when they pass you get a new dog and transplant the symbiont to make Butler Bork and they remember you and know the same tricks? Sitcom idea: a trill that bonded with a dog symbiont by mistake and must resist the urge to sniff butts and scratch with his leg

Kibayasu posted:That’s always the trick with Vulcans, either by the actors or the people directing them. In normal circumstances there still needs to be emotion, just very little of it displayed. It’s a very tight line to walk on. Main character Vulcans usually do get it mostly right though. my favourite Vulcan was the late Gary Graham. He plays the "restrained anger" so drat well

Kibayasu posted:It’s almost certainly being done for comedy but I think Lower Decks has my least favorite Vulcans of all? Too robotic in all things, too commonly rude and short with everyone. I feel like the writers probably took the easy way out and made her game that she is, in fact, a Mariner style maniac to other Vulcans, and that is still so square.

Well it took me a full 3-4 years longer than I thought it would but I'm finally making my way through DS9, and I've just hit Move Along Home. I was not prepared from the exposition I'm forced to conclude that the Vulcans made first contact with the Wadi and immediately told them about the hot rear end can't-miss gambling joint they have on DS9, which, on second thought, is actually perfectly logical indeed. If you meet a warrior people you show them the phaser banks. Bashir is just so elated at the idea of being stuck in a behavioral experiment against his will. Just completely in a familiar element.
