Syndlig posted:these are "good capitalist policies" in the sense that they're damage control to try to prevent the worst injustices of white supremacist capitalism I don't think that's wrong or I'd disagree too much other than taking issue with the idea that there is a "will of capitalism." Capitalism doesn't exist in some ideal form outside of material reality.

A real job guarantee (unlike single payer or minimum wage) may be incompatible with capitalism. If you take away "the power of the sack" it removes the main obstacle for workers to demand everything. At least in a liberal-democratic society! It might be possible to maintain a job guarantee under capitalism if there's enough police repression of strikers and malcontents. platzapS has issued a correction as of 03:31 on Oct 9, 2017 |

A graduated capital levy tax would be assessed on all persons with a net worth exceeding $1 million. of course you can modify it as needed.

Well we had a "healing meeting" today (well yesterday, it's 3am and I can't sleep) for Austin. There were roughly 50-60 people there, so probably 15-20% of the actual membership. Danny and Barbara did not attend. Quick recap of interesting events: 1. a nonmember cop was invited to the members-only meeting. when it was found out that he was present, objections were raised. the moderator pushed for a vote to keep him there "as a resource for discussion of police and prison abolition". the vote was overwhelmingly in favour of allowing a nonmember cop to stay in the members-only meeting. the feelings of members, many of whom are very active in anti-fascists movements in the city, were dismissed as trying to derail the meeting. 3. the group tried to out the person who recorded the august meeting, under the guise of "understanding why they did it". I objected to it because it was a clear attempt at putting them on trial. I was overruled. I have no idea what happened to the discussion after this since I left the meeting for half an hour. 4. turns out a not-insignificant portion of Austin DSA members might not actually be DSA members at all. many of them don't appear on the national membership rolls, and have been operating under a false assumption after being signed up by Danny. 5. we had to read the DSA national charter out loud to the room to prove to members that DSA actually is a socialist organization. 6. Danny "never resigned", in spite of two resignation emails. Apparently "leaving" means you didn't actually leave? 7. we had a breakout session for some reason. during this breakout (one was bylaws which I didn't attend) we were given one minute to speak to our stance of police and prison abolition. the only person allowed to moderate the conversation was a self-proclaimed "pro-police" member. I have also now learned that most of the people there are vehemently against both concepts in any form, that apparently the concept is "completely insane", and that far left members are infiltrating DSA in order to destroy it. 8. good news actually! there were at group of libsocs and anarchists in the meeting too so now we're forming a libertarian socialist caucus for Austin.

anyway here's something interesting my party's doing atm we've started something called The Great Survey. we've made a series of surveys for the major cities here, in which we give residents ten themes (from poverty, healthcare and housing to diversity, feminism and leisure) with five proposals each and ask them to pick a proposal and which three of the ten themes they find most important. a basic poll, really. but we're showing people that we're interested to hear what they think, which is incredibly valuable considering how disconnected to politics most people here feel. at the same time we're introducing ourselves and our policies to the people. we've made real headway in wallonia, but flanders is a lot more conservative so we really need that introduction - especially considering we're not really getting a fair shake in the national media and most people's knowledge of us begins and ends with 'they're the communists.' it's going really well so far. lot's of great feedback. might be something dsa chapters could do at a local level, i dunno

In that case the "op" in question was antidemocratic and needed to be disrupted. Syndlig posted:no way to know! he hasn't given over any of the membership rolls, sign-up sheets, chapter resources or materials, etc. so we have no idea how to find out who thinks they're a member but actually isn't Oh well that's marvelous. I'd say you need to do a check of people against the member rolls to find out if he's been bilking from members, but from the sounds of things you'll have your hands full making sure he doesn't get put back in charge.
