Man I haven't seen a sizzler in 2 decades. There used to be one next to the office where my mom worked in the nowheresville town I'm from, but it closed after 5 years and nowadays that building is an auto parts store. Where even did you find one?

I’m also from nowheresville but I found one when I moved to Portland. It closed a few years later. If only I’d held off a little longer I could have let my dreams stay dreams. But no, I just had to chase that side of Texas toast…

Sizzler is all over Japan and since food quality standards in Japan are higher than the US the food is exactly as good as my idiot child nostalgia remembers it being

We have a local chain up here in PA called HOSS’ Steak and Seafood and the garlic bread from their salad bar was the best I’ve ever tasted. Pretty decent shrimp and chicken too, at least at the one I’ve lived near for the better part of two decades :yum:

My favorite things about Wendys salad bar is when our parents stopped at one on a vacation. They've must've just installed it at the Wendys, because the manager was just sort of hanging around it, making sure everyone enjoyed it and had what they needed. But he also kept up this running banter, like he needed to big-up the salad bar and keep everyone pumped for it.

"Nice, nice salad you've put together there! And look over here, we've got mom comin' up for seconds on the jello! Whoah, and over here we got The Taco Kid with ... 1, 2.... 4 tacos on his plate! THIS KID LOVES HIS TACOS! Three cheers for The Taco Kid!! Nobody miss the garlic bread over at station 2, one of my personal faves! Don't forget, unlimited refills on everything! And... oh my god, already?! The taco kid has powered through this 4 tacos, AND IS COMING BACK FOR MORE! This kid is fueled by tacos, I love this kid!"

He did this for the entire half hour we were there, without stopping for a breath.

P.S. I was The Taco Kid.

I had to scroll back up halfway through this post to see if your username was The Taco Kid and I was reading an origin story.

What the gently caress was up with the "bacon bits" at those old salad bars? They were very very clearly not just little pieces of bacon, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they had more in common with dog food than actual pig products.

None of that stopped me from piling up my pressed-wood bowl with them and going to town. Remember the pressed wood salad bowls?

This stuff confused the hell out of me when I was in America and had a headache. I went to a pharmacy and tried to find paracetamol, and couldn't. I eventually asked, and was pointed to the acetaminophen.

Unlike every other America vs Elsewhere terminology difference, it turns out both names are short versions of the full chemical name of the stuff, which is n-acetyl-para-aminophenol.

Yeah, lots of post-vaccination talk about "taking some Tylenol" sounded a lot less severe when I found out what that was.

When sizzler got rid of the cheese toast I felt like a part of me (the part that was taken to Sizzler by my parents once every few months for the traditional Good Grades Meal) had died.

However I have since learned how to make the cheese toast and I do so regularly. My inner child is at peace

JUST FUCKING TAKE OFF ALREADY, SHIT
Old Country Buffet was our jam out in Illinois, and I remember one being next to a Froster Putter. I’d ask to have a birthday at either of them but we never did.

I would take a bread roll, carve it out hollow, and then put mashed potatoes and corn in it. Called it corn bread. I thought I was a genius food creator.

Every Friday after bowling my grandparents would take me out to Old Country Buffet (in Michigan). I would get so much poo poo - ham, fries, fried chicken, fried fish. It was incredible

But the best thing I got was this little square of chocolate cake. I would take it and then I would pour chocolate, strawberry and butterscotch syrup all over and make it drown in that. I can't understand now how I ate that, but the memory always brings a smile to my face :unsmith:

I get lunch with a friend on Wednesdays and the day before when we try to figure out where to go I always as a joke suggest a restaurant that's semi-defunct and out of the way, like Sizzler, Luby's, and Rainforest Cafe.

That's a meme of sorts, I guess.

I went there once and got a huge moth in my salad-bar salad. the server was horrified when I showed her, but, like, sometimes there's a moth in stuff, you know?

the food in general was lovely, but I knew what I was in for when they asked if I wanted to add a steak to my order for $1. also, the moth was undercooked.

Speaking of delusional people, what about a guy who hears a voice in his head that tells him to kill his entire family so he does it? Is that the only thing a voice in the head ever tells these people to do - to kill others? Dosent a voice ever tell a guy "go take a poo poo on the salad bar at Wendy's"?
