From what I've seen most of Russia's diplomatic staff are rather unhappy with the war, given they're not being blasted with Kremlin propaganda and mostly see this as making their job in the west harder.

Jel Shaker posted:can’t find the study right now but it suggested that the specific location of europe means we’re actually going to experience double the climate change and twice the pace to the rest of the world That's mostly the Med - They get both extreme warming and extreme drying, so Mediterranean states - both European (Italy, Space, Greece) and non-European (Morocco, Algeria, Libya) are going from "arid but farmable" to "basically a desert" over the future in large areas. Northwest Europe (us) is experiencing "below-average" levels of climate change - lots of ocean temperature control helps for that. Still means we're getting devastatingly hot summers like last year more regularly, but compared to the rest of the globe we get off lightly. This dry February is probably not linked to climate change - it's just lots of high pressure blocking, it happens sometimes. However, the already-depleted state of our groundwater due to last summers climate-change caused drought means that we're more reliant on winter rainfall to restore balance and prevent more severe multi-year droughts. So random events like a dry February can have more impact (assuming we don't suddenly have a wet Spring or damp Summer, which can always happen).

drat, you mean to say Russia is a corrupt gangster state where the rules don't apply and murder is just an extension of business by other means? I wonder how it got like that. Never mind, probably not relevant to the discussion.

Things that happened historically: famously not important or relevant to understanding anything happening in the modern day. The West cracked the USSR open like a duck egg, ruined its economy and consigned an entire generation of Russians to poverty and alcoholism in one of the biggest humanitarian tragedies ever to take place, they shock doctrine'd it to hell and created a playground for warlord-capitalists to backstab each other. The kind of person who manages to consolidate power in this environment is not going to be a nice person.

re: podcasts I have been enjoying knowledge fight a lot which is about alex jones being an idiot. I haven't listened to an extensive catalogue of their earlier episodes but they both appear to have become increasingly left wing, especially jordan who I get the feeling would very much be liking to set most of their subject matter on fire if given half a chance. Also re: walks, I strongly recommend using a stick to walk, I find it helps, and also finding an appropriate stick is a good reason to go walking. I made my own seven feet long out of a branch, which is also a fun way to spend an afternoon with a chisel. OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 18:56 on Feb 23, 2023 |

Oh yeah the depos are wild, and interesting in that alex is very clearly uncomfortable when presented with the consequences of his actions, he immediately goes into deflection and "woe is me" self victimization.
