The Studio System

Hollywood's Golden Age was built on a particular set of conditions. Studios owned the entire chain of production, distribution, and exhibition; and what they couldn't own, they used their influence to control. The dream factory made miracles, but it had a terrible appetite. Why are B-movies emulated, when their original purpose was to provide cheap thrills and fill holes in the schedule? What is the real price of stardom? What happens when you make art, and sell it like hog feed?

Please remember: Our next episode is in 4 weeks time, instead of the usual two. Thank you for understanding, and we'll see you in January!

Episode 21: Brawny and Devoted
This episode covers Chapter 21: House of the Devil

Riverdale's hottest club is The White Worm. Founded by refugees from the Salem Witch Trials, they only serve alcohol to parties including minors. Genre: Movie talk

Duration: Around a half-hour, give or take

Release: Every Tuesday

What this?
Seattle's Scarecrow Video is one of the longest-lasting independently run video stores in America, with over 120,000 different titles in their catalog, ranging from the mainstream to the incredibly eclectic and difficult to find. In this podcast my wife and I randomly select a movie that neither of us has seen before from the guide that they published back in 2004, watch it, do some research on it (when possible), and then discuss what we thought and learned.

Episode #20 -- Down With Love
I missed a few week's posts of episodes due to being overwhelmed with school and work and such, but we've been releasing episodes consistently over the last month or so, so if anyone is interested in hearing what we think about The Remains of the Day, Slap Shot, L'Atalante, or Cleopatra Jones, you can find those episodes on our site.

In this week's episode we watch and are annoyed by Ant-Man director Peyton Reed's 2003 homage to 1960's sex comedies and whore ourselves out to our corporate overlords over at Vernors Ginger Ale. It's a fine soft drink!

Most Recent Episode: Episode 10: Big Manta For Wrestlemania

In this episode, the great BIG MANTA makes its Pay-Per-View Debut, the Nine Cyborgs finally take the fight to Skull and Black Ghost directly, and we all get very confused with Norio Wakamoto's delivery in a key phrase.

Next Episode: Kamen Rider 1971, Episodes 16-23, in which the show is finding it's footing after its lead actor broke his leg and they had to get a new one, thus establishing an unintended tradition that Rider still carries today.

I Am In Eskew

Website | RSS Feed | iTunes

Release: Fortnightly
Genre: Horror, weird fiction

Description:
Trapped in the horror-filled and impossible city of Eskew, a man makes endless recordings of his day-to-day experiences, hoping to reach the outside world.

I love the works of Thomas Ligotti and Junji Ito - I wanted to write out a setting that has that same kind of nightmarish absurdism to it, with the potential for spatial and body horror alike. I'm definitely learning as I go (I might have to re-record Episode 1 to get the sound quality up to scratch), but I'm really enjoying the journey so far.

Most recent episode:
Episode 2: Reproduction David finds himself trapped in the labyrinthine Commemoration Gallery, a void of blank whitewashed walls and empty doorways where the rooms refuse to stay the same.

Updates every other week

At the beginning of 2017, my brother and I began a podcast where we discussed movies featuring Timothy Spall because of a pun I made on Twitter. Now we've just released our 25th episode. Every other week, we watch a film featuring Timothy Spall, and get into an often tangential conversation about it, sometimes with guests. It's in the vein of I Don't Even Own A Television in that we try to mix humor and criticism/discussion, as well as the fact that we've borrowed heavily from their episode structure.

I'd recommend first listening to episode 24, on 2017's The Journey, as an introduction, both because it's our first podcast of 2018 and because it features guest Shannon Strucci, host of So You Want To Be A Film Nerd. Aside from that standouts include our episodes on The Last Samurai (Episode 9), Sucker (Episode 16), The Damned United (Episode 17), Jackboots On Whitehall (Episode 19), Reuniting The Rubins (Episode 21), and our latest episode (Episode 25), about Vanilla Sky. The audio quality is admittedly inconsistent at best, but onward and upward.

The Secret Cinema

Social Media: Facebook | Twitter

Store:

via Threadless

Genre: film analysis, theory, and criticism

Release Schedule: once every two weeks, on Friday

Goons: just ol' china bot

Description: Yet another lo-fi film discussion podcast, with the emphasis on discussion, featuring films that are obscure (Images, Triangle), bizarre (I Drink Your Blood, I Hate Valentine's Day), or just under-analyzed in general (Hostel: Part 2, Extract). I have a degree in film and no success in the industry, my co-host/girlfriend is an artist, and each episode's guest is a strongly opinionated friend (if we can find one). I also open each episode with samples from the film being covered, to give some context for the discussion.

Most recent episode: Episode #47 - Killing Them Softly

Paolo and Carrie are joined again by Emily Neil to discuss Andrew Dominik's 2012 political crime drama Killing Them Softly. Topics include: the function of James Gandolfini's subplot, artistic depictions of being on heroin, and none of us remembering the specifics of the 2008 financial crisis.

Tara and Andrew Versus The Scarecrow Video Movie Guide

Available on:
iTunes / Google Play / Website / RSS

Genre: Movie talk

Duration: Around a half-hour, give or take

Release: Every (other, for the time being) Tuesday

Episode #25 -- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

In this week's episode we watch John Ford's rightly-acclaimed 1962 western starring James Stewart and John Wayne. Warning you in advance and with peace and love, there's more than a few bad attempts at cowboy drawls on our part in this one.

COMIC BROS Podcast

Get it: iTunes | Pocket Casts | Stitcher | YouTube | SoundCloud | Facebook | Twitter | RSS | Website

Genre: General Entertainment
Release: Month... ly... ish...?

Description: Mark Wise, Jin Wicked, and Root Bradford sit down every month to chat about what we're up to, what we've been working on, review what we've been reading, and discuss other comic-related topics. Includes perspectives both as readers and independent creators of comics.

Episode 25: SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIORS! :black101: In COMIC BROS Podcast Episode 025, Jin starts out with a discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of a ketogenic diet, finding purpose, beginning Queen of Assholes, and the unspoken fear of success. Root is on top of the world with a glass of wine and a new job that has him energized both creatively and personally. Mark was recently promoted to Art Director and has new enamel pins, but is struggling to balance family life and his artistic ambitions.

This episode's main subject is a conversation about "Comicsgate", social justice issues in comics, and the current state of corporate comics as primarily IP farms while they face declining floppy sales and aging customers. Jin plans to join the ranks of the 90s male autobiographers and "Smash the patriarchy by proving that women can be just as loathesome as men."

Episode 26 - Gothic: Off That Laud ft. Jenna Ipcar

Jenna Ipcar of Back Row Cinema Blog joins us to talk about 1986's Gothic, a film that follows Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley, and two of their less famous friends as they take drugs, read books, get horny, and summon some sort of demon over a weekend in Switzerland.
