That was one heck of a ride and it sounds like the type of person that's going to enjoy the car got it. I'm a bit surprised at the cost of ownership. I wasn't expecting that much of a hit. At the end of the day cars are toys and toys cost money. My current cars are by far the nicest cars I've ever had (between my wife and I) and I plan on having them for a long time. Our annual mileage is pretty low and all things considered there isn't any reason we can't keep them for at least 8-10 years. I'd go longer than that if I'm able to. What's next? Are you going to have a cooling off period or do you have a decent idea of what's next? The only next step seems like a Porsche of some sort would be the final hurrah.

I'm looking at houses in the area still, but I'm definitely thinking about buying another car. I've been looking at 996 Turbos ever since Jymmybob got a great deal on his. That's sort of why I linked that comparison video -- I think it's relevant to how a 911 might feel coming off the 348 -- extremely well thought out, not in your face, and not exciting aurally. Hearing the 348's motor rev from 5-7k at any speed was more satisfying than doing a 3rd gear pass in the Z06 or Viper. The Viper especially -- man, that thing just sounded so brutal, in the bad sense.

I don't know about a stock 911, but the turbo spool is pretty evident even in something as new as a 997.

In every picture I saw (even the legendleasing's glamourshots), the color was darker. If there was something that happened that caused the door (or the front and rear quarters) to be repainted, that could explain the top not fitting. This is what separates the NSX and 348 apart for me, I wouldn't put it past Ferrari to have just said "why would you order a car in white? Eh, looks good enough" while doing the fit and finish. The 348 reeked of a car where the amenities were a "oh I guess we should do that" because why the gently caress would you take your Ferrari out when it might rain, leave the top at home instead of stowing it. Everything about the actual driving and mechanicals of the car was artwork, but then you get to the door and there's exposed screws. The NSX is a billion times better and more thought out in terms of fit and finish but it lacks something the Ferrari had in terms of driving. I hate to drop the "soul" moniker but you can feel the Ferrari was built to be driven and enjoyed and forget the rest, while the NSX was something you could live with everyday.

I agree, which is why I think it's weird that the Ferrari didn't do better in contemporary car comparos where practicality is not as big of a concern. The 348 is 100% the car you want someone else to own and let you borrow and dress up like Don Johnson.

I totally believe that it's possible that the factory made it like that. Inferior Italian production methods, and all. I was just something I wondered over the time it was floating around here... seemed coincidental that there were color issues in the middle and fit issues in the middle. Having owned an '87 Biturbo Si, and seeing the factory double-gasket the exhaust manifold? Yeah, I'd believe just about anything with Italian car assembly.

Because yeah, technically, an NSX would be a better choice. But a 348 would be a much better experience overall, aside from maintenance of course

Spare parts have arrived in the NL. Buyer's workshop has a bar in it, so this is the crew staring at pieces that not too long ago were scattered around my apartment: We managed to pack the white targa top in my new TV's box. It was pretty much a perfect fit. Used the car cover to pad it a bit more. Buyer says Fedex's packing of the wheel and exhaust parts was really nice. He used his business Fedex number to pay for all that. I swear he explained that he was shipping internationally by saying "I'm Dutch" in the same tone Goldmember used in Austin Powers. Car is still state-side awaiting whatever the export process is to finalize. I still need to cancel my insurance and registration. Ok, cars I've looked at since the 348 auction sold: this rebuilt 996 Turbo: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Porsche-911-/282324054241?orig_cvip=true I actually got it PPIded, and the rebuild looked decent, but the seller was really unappealing to deal with, and it sold before the 348 money was in my hands. Lotus 7 clones: http://www.ebay.com/itm/262849953648 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-Westfield-Lotus-Super-7-Series-3-/162268770684 I'm still pretty intrigued by these, but cars without federal VINs and without basic Mass state inspection items (wipers and sprayers) are gonna be that much trickier to register for normal street use. Hilariously, the rotary up there has a manual wiper feature that I'm sure I could rig a spray bottle up to. A Delorean: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1981-delorean-dmc-12-3/ Not sure what these sell for, but I imagine driving one would be like having a moving billboard for BttF. This rebuilt 986 Boxster S: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-Porsche-Boxster-S-Convertible-2-Door-/192091828452?orig_cvip=true I actually won this auction and had the seller drive it to my friend in Daytona Beach. But the moment my friend drove it, he asked me if I could sell it to him. So I might not title this one, even. He is asking his fiancee for permission to get it and then he'll decide. e: as soon as the Morgan EV3 surfaced, I emailed my "local" Morgan dealer to get news updates, but it's been half a year with no news. And, it'd probably be very very expensive. But that is an example of a very different car that I'm interested in. kimbo305 fucked around with this message at 22:31 on Feb 13, 2017 |

If you are looking at 7 clones I'd recommend driving an Elise. While the used market is just crazy with even the roughest ones well over 20k and a nice example above 30 they are much more usable. The clones I've driven were both 4age powered with traditional suspension and an absolute blast, but every bit of road gravel, dust and half the puddles end up right in the lap. A tonneau cover is pretty much a requirement if you want to use it on the street which makes it even harder to get in and out of. If you have big feet get used to stowing your shoes and good luck finding someplace they won't bounce out onto the street. The Elise is easy to get in and out of unless the top is up, and has working heat and defrost. They start every time and require no special maintenance and still are great to drive. The exhaust note isn't likely to impress though.

I view the clamshell issues with the modern Lotus cars as a bigger issue than IMS on some Porsche cars. The Porsche is a mechanical issue that is uncommon, but can be prophylactically solved. The clamshells on the Lotus cars are fragile and extremely expensive. If you can find one that's been salvaged for clamshell, repaired and sold reflecting the branding, that's an option. Otherwise, I find them to be too delicate of a snowflake for ownership. Damned shame, too, because they are great running, great looking cars at a reasonable price with a small garage footprint. All prime metrics for me.

Another knock against the Elise is that while it is uncommon (at least around here), it doesn't feel unusual enough to me anymore. I think if the right deal came along, I would do it, though. My CEO had a very low mileage one and he was trying to sell it to me for 35k, and I was like no way, not at that price. One more problem with kit cars: in MA, you need to pass OBD ready states on cars newer than 2003. So any kit car made after that needs to have OBD-II, which rules out newer-made carbed kits like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/232235502865 The attractiveness of a Boxster (or Elise) is that I can be pretty sure I can just drive up to an inspection station and pass without any effort.

I missed that the first time looking at that ebay ad and promptly broke out laughing. Rotaries in LHD cars even make it easier since there's no exhaust or intake plumbing to dodge. Suffice to say Caterhams end up with a U-joint at the rack and one on the inside past the firewall; part of the trick is having the master cylinders pointing towards the rear of the car and having the shaft to the side of them.
