Utah used be a Mormon Zionist state called Deseret. They had their own paramilitary and even engaged in a "war" with the federal government. If the US ever balkanized I'd expect it to be one of the first states to separate right up there with California and Texas. Despite the overall drop in religiosity Mormons are still a majority there and Utah is still considered their holy land.
