what a coincidence this was posted to the reddit blog yesterday:

quote:

We have been looking closely at the conversations on reddit and at personal safety. We’ve always encouraged freedom of expression by having a mostly hands-off approach to content shared on our site. Volunteer moderators determine and uphold rules for content in their subreddits, and we have stepped in when we see threats to our values of privacy and safety.

In the past 10 years we’ve seen how these policies have fostered cool and amazing conversations on reddit. We’ve seen new types of conversations as AMAs and /r/askscience and /r/askhistorians developed. We’ve seen more and more organic content as part of conversations after the introduction of self-posts. We’ve also seen the scope and scale of discussions explode.

Unfortunately, not all the changes on reddit have been positive. We’ve seen many conversations devolve into attacks against individuals. We share redditors’ frustration with these interactions. We are also seeing more harassment and different types of harassment as people’s use of the Internet and the information available on the Internet evolve over time. For example, some users are harassing people across platforms and posting links on reddit to private information on other sites.

Instead of promoting free expression of ideas, we are seeing our open policies stifling free expression; people avoid participating for fear of their personal and family safety. Last month, we conducted a survey of over 15,000 redditors—these are people who are part of the reddit community—that showed negative responses to comments have made people uncomfortable contributing or even recommending reddit to others. The number one reason redditors do not recommend the site—even though they use it themselves—is because they want to avoid exposing friends to hate and offensive content.

see? don't worry they're fixing reddit :unsmith:

Reddit has officially jumped the shark. What this is is a mea culpa admitting that their history of letting the community police itself hasn't worked (it has) and beginning a crackdown on expression/speech/communities the admins don't like.
It started with /r/jailbait... but I wasn't a ephebophile so I didn't speak up. Then they came for /r/thefappening, but I didn't speak up because I wasn't into fuzzy pictures of people I don't know. Then they came for /r/gamergate, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a gamer.
I'm speaking up now. This is a step in a VERY WRONG direction and will be the end of reddit as we know it if it's allowed to continue
| Instead of promoting free expression of ideas, we are seeing our open policies stifling free expression
No, you're seeing expression you don't like and have decided to stifle that. If you're going to become a curated community of safe spaces and hugboxes, say that. If you're going to be a space for free expression, then you have to understand that some expression will offend your sensibilities. That's a GOOD THING. How else can one find out that they're wrong if not for challenging their own ideas?
I really hope that the reddit admins reconsider the path they're going down. Shadowbanning those who question Ellen Pao, banning communities that they don't like... digg fell for less than this. Reddit could very well be next.
Edit: It's really funny how immediately after this post was linked in SRS, the downvotes and lovely comments started. But they don't brigade. Nope. Good work, guys (Yes I said guys like the goddamn cishet white male shitlord I am.)

SA has been a hub for white knighting various causes over the past 7 or 8 years despite the site starting from a group that made fun of anything and everything from dead people to teenagers with mental issues. While I agree with the subreddits being creepy, this outrage by SA has more to do with their sense of community often resulting in a focus towards other similar groups, and in this case they combine their white knighting of causes with hating a similar group into labeling all of reddit as pedophiles, etc.

that's a really old screenshot from 2011 or 2012 showing the cozy relationship known pedophile apologist violentacrez had with reddit management, hth

All the while, Violentacrez's critics cried out the same refrain: "How does he get away with this?" One reason Violentacrez continued to occupy such a high-profile position on Reddit was of course his free speech rhetoric. But Violentacrez has historically had a close relationship with Reddit's staff, a fact far less well-known than his controversial behavior. Violentacrez was a troll, but he was a well-connected troll. He told me he was close with a number of early Reddit employees—many of whom have now moved on—chatting with them on IRC or sometimes even on the phone. A few years ago, while Jailbait was still going strong, Reddit's administrators gave him a special one-of-a-kind "pimp hat" badge to honor his contributions to the site, which he proudly displayed on his profile. Brutsch said he was even in the final running for a job as a customer support representative at Reddit last year.

reddit wants to be like usenet, but unlike usenet they want to own everything and sell advertising on all of it while denying all responsibility for the content and community that they foster. in the past they were massive hypocrites about 'free speech' and happily censored links to sites critical of reddit until they were caught and had to change course.

now that newer people running things are actually trying to improve things they are being accused of being sellouts

FYAD isn't the example I'd use. ADTRW bans child pornography, obviously, but pedos sprout there like weeds. Compared to mainstream society, it certainly has a permissive attitude toward the kind of borderline poo poo that attracts pedophiles to anime, i.e. "fanservice." Probably plenty of crossover between ADTRW weirdos and that bleach_hentai subreddit.
