steinrokkan posted:Soviet computers were clones of Western chipsets. So they had all the downsides of those, plus shoddy build quality, plus abysmal supply and not being available for consumers. The best way to get a computer was to save up vouchers for a state sanctioned import of a Commodore or ZX Spectrum or something. There were soviet scientists who had access to mainframes for their work and enjoyment. But even in the US, PC's were originally a business tool for many years before they became popular with consumers. Even with software and games on the market most consumers had no idea what to do with a computer until the late 1990's. The early 80's builds of the Vic-20 and ZX Spectrum were great for hobbyists who knew how to do their own programming but store bought software was limited so it wasn't really a consumer computer like everyone is used to today. I learned programming in basic from the Commodore magazine so I could play simple games before anything really was available.

If capitalism were responsible for computers, it would be impossible to build your own or even take one apart, every computer would run Windows which would display more ads than it does currently, there would be very few publically accessible websites (I'm talking like less than 1,000 and you would pay ISPs a monthly subscription for website bundles similar to cable TV), all of your data would be mined without your consent in order to "recommend" to you pyramid scheme-type Facebook games with microtransactions designed to be simple enough that a child can stumble through them.

I've never seen an ad on my Windows 10. Also I don't think I could build my own GPU, and it's impossible to modify most computers, aka consoles and phones.

Ultimately the factors that bring down all good forms of government are systemic corruption, greed and selfishness. When these traits inevitably manifest in the ruling class the system is ruined no matter how good it was. The internet is still highly socialist in nature even if large american corporations have tried to take control of it. If our "leaders" and their market overlords had their way information would never be free like it is now with the global web.

I do really appreciate the Chinese culture and work ethos even if their government has abandoned them under the guise of crony communism. The Chinese work hard to better the society they live in rather than because they feel the need to compete with everyone around them. Though this culture of national unity might also partially be a product of their relatively homogeneous society where most people are of the same race and class. When the massive explosion happened at one of the chinese docks people were all rushing to donate blood for the victims. There's an idea that the entire country in this together and that they need to work in unison to improve as a people rather than as individuals. e: also it's because of capitalism that we have companies like Intel and Nvidia taking a dominant position on the market through shady and unfair means that for some reason are allowed by the government. kikkelivelho fucked around with this message at 13:56 on Oct 19, 2016 |

I remember the days before corporations took over the internet. Lots of cool personal websites for every niche interest, from microbrewing to gi joe collecting and all things in between. These mostly still exist, but back then there were no no popup adds, autoplay videos, redirects, etc, unless you went to a porn site. It was a nice time. A world without predators or parasites waiting for you at every click. What I'm saying is gently caress corporate America. Vote Jill Stein.

This is correct. Whenever someone bitches about "capitalism", the underlying problem is actually the result of collusion between public and private entities. Every developed country on the planet has a mixed-market system in place. The premise of this thread is flawed and the OP sucks.
