IIT everyone has read this book but they can only remember people being pissed on or boiled alive. There was a big mini-series in the 80's. It's all right but As explicit as a PG movie.

There was a part where an entire village poops in a trough together and it's used to illustrate how good Japanese people are at ignoring things that would be embarrassing to themselves and others/ Did I make that up or did it actually happen? P.S. James Clavell is a great storyteller, just kind of a lovely writer.

This book had so many memorable parts. Like the dude being boiled alive, or the gardener committing suicide for mistakenly throwing out Brackthorne's spoiled fish.

Also at all the various points where the protestants and catholics try explain to the Japanese why the other side is wrong and super evil, and how the japanese reactions range from confusion to exasperation to polite amusement at the thought of any of these smelly dumb gaijin thinking they're better than others of their kind

Fleta Mcgurn posted:Wow, some butthurt peeps in this thread. Okay, have fun! You are poisonous. Seriously. This thread had a good vibe and was all about geeking out about a pretty good book a lot of us read when we were younger, and you had to come in with your dose of literary snootiness oh he's a good storyteller but a lovely writer that can only lead somewhere negative. There was no need for your comment whatsoever, or better yet you could have just said "he's a good storyteller" (which I agree with) and leave the rest out. What is your loving point anyway? That there are writers who entertain through the art of their prose, and James Clavell isn't one of them? No poo poo. But your attitude is just laughable. A writer who is good at storytelling, characterization, plotting, etc, does not deserve to be called "lovely", sir. What bothers me here is your asinine frame of mind that says it's okay to forever besmirch writers like James Clavell for not having arty literary prose. Clavell just changed some of the details so everyone didnt go "oh its nobunaga". Similarly, blackthorn is based on a dude called william adams. Dude had a crazy life. He was the survivor of a trading expedition and ended up as a samurai just like blackthorn, and he was also responsible for some of the first industrialization in japan.
