The game is most fun to me right now as a spectator game, watching this guy slowly build out his base and taking pains to fully automate each step has been cathargic. For me the logic control in the game is way too spacy and convoluted to be enjoyable, I'd like power and logic cables to be separate and for a proper control unit for unified logic to exist that I can just program based on its inputs.

I put money into it to support the devs though, hoping it makes it far.

It's gotta take like 100 hrs to truly engineer an temperature controlled space base. The worst part of the game is mining so after a while I just give up. They haven't added any real content since EA went live right?

I swapped to creative after the game (literally) exploded my save file. Mining sucks.

I kind of like the super convoluted logic stuff, it seems really powerful. I think this game really does have a chance of being the next ss13, it's the only 3d attempt so far that has realised how important the complexity is. For this to be adapted successfully into the roles and rounds based game we want, it needs to be complex enough that people have to specialise and only learn a few systems. To also capture the ss13 magic, those systems need to be hard enough that even those specialist players can make hilarious mistakes.

"Oh no, our idiot electrician hosed up the solar sun tracking system trying to "improve" it, but we can't use the solid generator because we have no coal: our miner died in space while seeing if he really could use his waste tank as jetpack fuel" is already ss13 territory

On both sides of the mining playerbase:
  • Today's patch added ground-penetrating radar to use with the ore scanner:

  • Today's patch also expanded Steam Workshop support, so soon enough you may be able to find an XML mod for whatever you want (such as no more need for mining):

Hunger is very annoying. You get hungry way too fast, and while it's vaguely important for their survival gameplay stuff, let's face it we're just going to mod it out when we turn this game into ss13

It's waste air (CO2 in most cases, but any filtered gas from your life support really) but yeah, you can swap it with any other small tank, including your air supply or your jetpack.

The same applies to welder fuel.

Some youtube folks I watch started playing this and seem to be having a good time. There's no actual game yet outside of base building though, right? Is there enough going on for a few hours of fuckery at least?

I bounced hard off of SS13 over the look and the incredibly unresponsive UI, not so much the complexity, so I'm willing to give a bash here.

There's no horrible lag unlike SS13's UI, but the whole "it takes fifteen different actions to open a window" is absolutely the same. You have been warned.

The complex UI and even more complicated system means the base buildings takes more than a few hours but yeah there's nothing else to it just yet.

Well if you like making increasingly more complicated and automated systems you can get a lot of time out of it. Also, if you can come and show me to make an atomos system that doesn't cause the base on the goon server to spontaneously combust I would worship you as a god.

I haven't done much gas work yet except to tell my mate off when he put the gas generator on the solar farm arm of the station, so if (when) it blows up it'll take all our power out at once.

The fire issues seem to be glitches anyways. Steel ingots lighting on fire, wall heaters being perfectly safe until they aren't, NAN pipe pressures, etc.

Psawhn

I swear that they had SS13 shenanigans in mind when programming pipe mixers. They act as pumps, which means they can overfill a pipe section until it bursts and releases its contents.

Considering that a common use for pipe mixers is to mix the hydrogen/oxygen fuel mix for furnaces and welders, and therefore said bursting pipes will often release these burnable gases at their very flammable perfect 2:1 stoichiometric ratio...

Yeah, curated weekly patches is waaay too aggressive of a deadline, and I'm glad SE finally split beta/public. Space Engineers will be in a textbook under the headline, "Feature Creep".

Daily repo is an automated push of the current dev branch to Steam. Looking at the Beta branch it is almost daily, just triggered manually. Which is a better solution anyway.

I really like the premise of this and hope it gets somewhere, but do they still plan on doing some kind of NPC visitor thing? If it is only going to exist as a 3D ss13 with no real community and probably even easier to just totally grief (considering you have to build everything 100% yourself) I don’t see it being anything but something I can boot up and mess around with a cool gas simulation.

Not sure, I myself need to dedicate some time to actually play it. Especially with all the new changes

BUT I almost find its the kind of game I enjoy watching someone stream more (like EJSA, or Dassomethingorother) because he has the brains for making really complicated systems work, I simply run out of patience or time to do huge bases like they make

And the Goon discord channel has been dead since Feb, so

I WANT to join a server with other people, but I'm very picky in that I don't want to hop into a map that everyone has already figured everything out, and has a huge operational base going

I kind of want to see it and be involved in it being built from the very start... I'm weird like that

I think the pile of us who got in at launch are still around, it's just that we've run the game out of content. Also we blew up the proto-goon base like three times due to oxygen fires and it sucks having to trudge halfway around the moon looking for minerals after you strip mine the area near the start to rebuild.

If anyone wants to get on the goon server I'd be down.

Refactored Inventory control for keyboard and mouse. Now features docked windows, use keys to open and close or click with mouse to change. Allows multiple windows to be open, scrolling between all open slots and interactions. Mouse now allows movement between slots within players inventory. Better support for language and keyboard changes, and reduce memory and garbage collection significantly by pooling windows and slots. Unified event-based slot management means that keyboard and mouse control results (should) be unified and (should) reduce the maintenance cost of running dual systems.
