Does Hair Metal count as metal? Coz I like hair metal the best of all metals. Due to the fact that Hair Metal encourages and exaggerates all the things that are fun, silly and performative about "metal" Conversely, does Tool count as metal? Coz I feel the opposite about Tool. It takes all that is fun about Metal, throws it away, and reduces what is left into a nub. A quote from someone I don't remember described listening to Tool as being the same as sitting in a small dark room with wet walls. How about Helmet? I love them for two reasons. 1) it is Jazz Metal. Metronomic and weirdly rythmical. also 2) They don't dress or act like "metal-heads". I saw them at the Big Day Out one year, and they were all dressed in surf T-Shirts, shorts and basketball runners. It is a cool and good change from the uniform of black leather trousers and long greasy hair. Also, largely because I am a contrarian arsehole, and an immature man-child, I really like this picture. This is more "blackgaze" but I saw Deafheaven live in Boston and some dude asked me if I wanted to help start the pit when they came on to which I said "sure." After the show I saw him being held up by one of his friends and he had tweaked his leg in the most disgusting way I've ever loving seen, his knee was super dislocated.
