Why did Calgary and Carolina trade him?

I mean supposedly he also didn't see a good chance for him to step in with Carolina but yeah it was always rumored if never confirmed that he was ready to play out his college career and go UFA

Even up until he went pro people were still kinda like "wow he has the highest hockey IQ I've seen but he's a bit small and doesn't skate really fast I dunno if he'll translate more to a PP specialist in the NHL"

Then he was behind DeAngelo in terms of PP time in his rookie year or he'd have broken 100 points earlier than Hughes and Makar, etc.

it's fascinating he was able to translate his skillset directly into the NHL pretty much but it speaks to how drat smart he is on the ice

e: Fox with the C though seems kinda weird but dunno how he is in the locker room in terms of leadership

Fox would be behind Makar if he had his points per game pace of last season for his rookie year too. Last year Fox scored at a 0.855 ppg pace, Makar is 0.917 ppg for his career. He would be ahead of Hughes though.

If you want to go with the reliable long term option he makes a lot of sense- his skill set will age very well. Krieder fits the more obvious mold but his contract is on very shaky ground and he plays a style that can fall off a cliff. Same for Trouba

Zibanejad makes sense too as he is also locked in but granted he is 5 years older. Who knows but I’d be happy with “I’m only playing for the Rangers” attitude to be rewarded with a C. Seems right.

Fox could have easily argued that he deserves to get paid more than McAvoy so Rangers probably saved like 1 mil there at least

It’s because you want the next one to be easy to negotiate, not harder. So they pay a premium for the RFA years maybe and just lock it up for long term. Eventually the cap will go up again maybe and it’ll start to look like a steal. Unless he craters for some reason, but that really doesn’t look likely to happen.

Yes, surely the Oilers will continue to score on almost half of their power plays

Darude - Adam Sandstorm
Aug 16, 2012

Considering they are a break even or slightly better 5x5 team, they don't actually need to score on 50% of their PPs!

Edit: To expand on this, the Oilers haven't been even a breakeven 5x5 team since 2016-17. They seem to be at the very least a break even one now, and there is 0 reason to expect their PP and PK to suddenly be bad when both have been good-elite since Tippett took over.

This all goes away come the playoffs cause lol the fuckin nhl is a dogshit horror show but they're going to hit 100 points + with that formula.

The Oilers are a legitimately good, albeit flawed team and as much as it pains me to say it I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they won the cup this year. With the way McDavid has played the last few years it's a matter of when not if the stars align for them now. It would be one of the sport's biggest failures if they don't win the cup by 2025.
