Guns and bullets that do status effects are incredibly useful in the early SMT games. They're not as over-the-top broken in if... as they are in the original Shin Megami Tensei (where bullets aren't consumable items and so they never run out), but they're still incredibly useful.

I still haven't beat the the first dungeon but I just walked from the start to the boss while talking my way out of every single fight. I also didn't check the map once even though literally every room looks the same.

I've been here too long! :psyduck:

Edit: The boss killed my main character in three turns even though I had three level 12 minions with with me. Guess I need to grind for better armor.

Are there big differences between SNES and PS1 versions of the game? I found a fan translation for the SNES version, but the OP has the PS1 listed, and this seems like a fun way to get me off my butt and actually PLAY some games.

EDIT: Oh hey the Wiki has a version differences bit and they do seem to be not-insignificant, but mostly in terms of gameplay rather than story.

Whew, first dungeon complete! Things went much better with the boss once I put my main character in the back row on :blastu: duty. Found out when they go down the whole party is defeated.

smt if is a much worse game than smt1. my tip is that tunnels excavated by students in the domain of sloth do not have random encounters. advance time by travelling up and down these segments only and it will go by faster

Finished Gluttony, and so far I like it. I appreciate how snappy it is. The dungeon design isn't too bad yet. Having Persona helps with understanding the spells and fusion system, but I haven't dived too much into yet. The bosses have been fun so far!

Started the game today. Only in the Pride area, already wishing this game had a Compendium, it's reminding me hard that while I like the idea of having to negotiate with demons to get them to join your party, the actual end result is usually an extremely frustrating exercise in the RNG hating your guts. I haven't been able to recruit a single goddamn demon yet, aside from the Jack Frost that auto-joins you in the school. At least the 3DS remake of Soul Hackers had a Compendium.

It's already looking rough for this game. I love modern SMT, but the pre-Nocturne titles are real hard to play in TYOOL 2022.

Also, I've been experiencing an odd visual glitch playing the game as a Virtual Console inject on 3DS. The "health indicator" sprites for my party are being drawn on top of the dialog boxes, resulting in some of the text being covered. Is this caused by the fact that I'm playing the game on Virtual Console, did I somehow screw up patching the ROM, is this normal for the translation patch, or what? So far there hasn't been anything that I haven't been able to figure out from context, but I'd like to get this fixed if possible. I may try putting an emulator on my tablet, but then I'd have to bring a controller with me to work and the 3DS is much more compact.

It's probably because of the VC inject yeah. You could install SNES9x 3DS or Retroarch and use those.

My magic user (Yumi) doesn't seem to know that spell. I did use an item that made a little mini map appear once.

Gaius Marius

I got Lucky and Yumi's first Demon got it I think, but you might wanna try getting it on one of yours. It helps a lot in the latter dungeons dodging the obvious traps and one way doors. I think the Casino also sells the item version of it if you wanna test your luck/Savescum.

I just got a level up where it told me "Yumi has learned to cast 9 spells". So I go into her status menu and the magic list is reporting the same 8 spells she had before, nothing's changed. There's a counter at the top that says "Magic 8/9" though, and I don't know what that means either! This game is so painfully obtuse at times.

Still have not managed to recruit literally anything, so it's just Yumi and I rolling around the Pride dungeon hoping nothing murders us both. (E: complaining on the internet wins again , I just managed to grab a Kobold)

Gaius Marius posted:

First time you die you get a guardian. After that if you check status, and then hit some button maybe up, you can see the guardians states and there will be a bar that fills up. You fill it up by killing enemies, bigger bar = better demon. No idea of the specifics.
It's actually X, in case anyone's wondering (I was).

It does. But remember that you can either make a demon with Estoma, like unicorn, to stop encounters (the effect lasts until the next new moon), or just pace back and forth in any tunnel squares that have been dug (because encounters never happen in them).

I mean it's still pointless and tedious, but you can knock out the five or six full lunar cycles it take for everyone to finish their tunnels in a couple of minutes if you're not dealing with encounters every couple steps.

Yeah I've been doing that, I'm just worried that the devs assumed you'd be fighting the whole time and designed the upcoming level curve from that

I finally got inside the pig dungeon within gluttony but the level spike of the monsters there are just too hard. I managed to get near to the boss, but I'm gonna need to close the level gap. Maybe I leveled up enough to fuse some better demons. Buy some better equipment perhaps.

Started over today because I did another inject (this one's a forwarder for IIRC CATSFCplus or something like that), didn't bother jumping through the hoops to convert my save file because I wasn't very far in and not doing super well to begin with. Immediately got pasted by the first random encounter, but fortunately the Guardians you get for your first death seem to be the same, and because I was a lower level this time, they didn't penalize my stats yaaaay.

But if the Guardians you get the first time are fixed, then why in the bloody hell did they give the MC a magic-focused guardian? He can't even learn any spells! :argh: The baffling design decisions are just piling up.

Changing emulators did fix that graphical bug I was having though. Right now I'm smacking some randoms around to prepare for the first real fight in the gym.

I don't know what the optimal balance is, but if you're fighting the entire time you're loitering around that level, you end up massively over-leveled. Or at least that's what happened back when I first played the game, blind, years ago. Replaying just a month or so ago I just went up to the level above, cast Estoma, and then ran back and forth in that long-rear end corridor along the west side of the level, re-casting Estoma whenever it ran out. I don't remember running into any problems afterwards, although I guess I have played a fuckin' lot of megaten games so I don't know if my experience is unusual or whatever.

I'm currently right behind where you were at here and I'm feeling pretty discouraged. Everything I'm reading is basically "get ready to get stomped or to throw your controller at a wall once you get to Sloth" and while I'm doing fine in battles, I can't shake the feeling that I'm just loving something up with how I'm approaching things. It's such a weird game.
