See I grew up on classic rock radio, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels band (Actually great music, hate seeing "devil went down to georgia" as a one-hit-wonder), and obviously many others.

During the time in School when I didn't have many friends and listened to a poo poo-ton of music, I listened to all sorts of the modern day rock, like Nirvana, Linkin Park, Blink 182, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and so on and so forth for a few years.

I went from burned CD to burned CD before getting an Ipod and filling it with what I loved at the time, Electro House and friends (2007-2009 was an amazing time for said music). So for many years my daily music has changed Drastically

I got a smartphone a year ago and, thanks to premium spotify (Only means to get spotify on phone at the time) it's gone full circle. I can pull a track that gets stuck in my head in literally less than 30 seconds, and since at my old job (4+ years) I could just listen to whatever as my headphones was hearing protection I've listened to probably too much of everything.

Listening to Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, as well as Personal Jesus, brings the journey of music around for me. I love listening to him sing it because it is almost personal, and I feel that both he and NiN had a connection to that song in different ways.

Of course Alex Metric has also covered Personal Jesus and I liked (especially mixed with 'Open your eyes') but it just brought everything I loved growing up. From that classic sound, to the modern attitude of NiN being funneled in a way that I just couldn't think of, makes it a great song to me.

It's not some crazy fanatical valhalla of music for sure. But I love the track, I just happen to love hundreds of other tracks too.

I guess I appreciate it in another way.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go listen to that lovely Icona Pop 'I love it' song because somnebody made a reference in the Mechwarrior Online thread and now I have that loving chorus stuck in my head.

What if an old white man sung a song written by a younger white guy. Maybe then some other white guys could really get in touch with how hard life is for them.

You think you hate white people but really all you hate is you.

I think the Cash version is superior, the age in cash's voice adds weight to the words the original could never hope to convey.

Also I can't stand NIN hurt because all the live videos always show a bunch of sad teenagers crying and signing along and its this dumb lighters up sad sack torch ballad which is the opposite of what an unpredictable act like NIN should be. The way that poo poo was sold it may as well have been an nsync or beiber ballad.

Rusty Cage is also a fun cash cover.

that makes NIN kind of embarrassing, that's what i mean

Yeah Johnny Cash's version is much much better. The NIN version is just going to be a footnote in music history for what little this song will make.

Yeah, Reznor has the musically better version. Cash's version is just so loving intense because it's Johnny loving Cash singing it. He takes a song about heroin addiction and somehow turns it into a tribute/memorial to his entire career.

Which is actually kind of hosed up, in regards to how he viewed his life's work, but Cash was always kind of a grim fellow.

Everyone wore clown suits in the 70s.

Two things about this topic. One, he made a Nine Inch Nails song listenable, that in and of its self is god drat amazing.

Second, before you go after Cash's body of work. Start with just how loving terrible Elvis's music was.

Johnny Cash's cover rendition of "Hurt" is superior to the original release by Trent Reznor. Fortunately Reznor created the song. Otherwise Trent Reznor would just look like a poseur pretending to understand a life of much suffering. (see also the band System of a Down)

What the gently caress does Johnny Cash know about suffering? He was rich and famous and prolly hosed a ton of hot bitches and got drunk all the time, and to top it off, it sounds like he believed he would live joyously eternally after death because he was an idiot fool. I stole the shoes I wear from a thrift store, 2 sizes too big. I had to cut them down and put 'em back together with used duct tape I ripped from ducts. The worst part is, shoes are the most important tool I use in my job! I'm a tap dancer by trade. I know suffering. Johnny Cash does not.

It's good Cash did something with the song. Trent's just some suburbanite band camp nerd that hosed around with heroin and avoided paraphrasing the Basketball Diaries with his life. Dude's still alive and has always been pretty cut and good looking, I think a lot of folks are confusing 'gosh this guy really understands the common person's suffering' with 'gosh I wish I could gently caress this guy / let this guy gently caress me.'
